Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Conscientious objector -- charges against
« on: Tuesday 23 April 24 15:54 BST (UK)  »
I should be most grateful if someone could fill in the gaps in my reading of the attached charge against the conscientious objector Arthur Green. When COs were forcibly conscripted into the army after the passing of the Military Service Act in 1916, it was routine for them to be asked to put on a uniform or pick up a rifle. Their refusal to do so 'disobeying the lawful command of a superior officer' meant they faced a court martial and were sent to prison. The wording in Arthur's case appears to be slightly different, but I can't decipher it all:
What I have so far is: 'When on Active Service Disobeying ........... Wilful Defiance of a Lawful Command Given By His Superior Officer'.
If you can fill in the few missing words, it would be much appreciated!

The Common Room / Toffee apple men -- registered??
« on: Friday 19 April 24 17:56 BST (UK)  »
I have a man who had been a conscientious objector in WW1. Afterwards, struggling to find work, he 'applied for registration as a toffee apple man' and followed this line of work for the rest of his life. It's obvious what he did, what surprised me was that he needed registration. Presumably this was to allow him to sell his wares on the street? This is in Suffolk, by the way, if that's relevant. Any comments welcomed.

London and Middlesex / James Francis Stephen Wemyss
« on: Wednesday 21 February 24 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
According to his army records, JFS Wemyss was born in Fulham in 1888, and thereafter attended St Thomas's School and worked as a woollen salesman. His family home was in Munster Road.
Can I find his birth or census records? I cannot. WHY?

I note that when he emigrated in 1918 (after being court martialled) he gave his nationality as Irish, however.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Armed Forces / J.E.S. Wemyss, 2/Lt, 9/Middlesex

This is such an unusual name but I can find nothing else about this chap except his medal card! It would be fantastic even to get his first names, anything else would be a bonus. Discovery, Ancestry and FindMyPast have not helped me but I'm wondering whether someone out there can do better ...???

I think I know why he was on the 'suspense list' but need more information to be sure!

Armed Forces / E.C.G or E.G.G. Lascelles -- who was he?
« on: Monday 05 February 24 09:57 GMT (UK)  »
Lascelles was court martialled and cashiered in May 1916 for 'scandalous conduct, four times'. He was a lieutenant in the RASC but I can't find his service record. I also can't find anything else anywhere, although I do have his medal card from the NA. The Lascelles family seem to have been wealthy and well-connected but this one man seems to have left very little mark.
My dream would be to identify his service record (I'm hoping it might be under his first name, whatever that was) but anything would be appreciated. It would help a great deal if I knew his full name, date of birth or as I say, anything, really!

Hi there, this appears to say [something] Japanner? Can anyone translate for me? You will see his son is doing the same thing (whatever it is)!

The Common Room / Private lunatic asylums and censuses
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 14:47 BST (UK)  »
I have a man who may have been in Brislington House, a private lunatic asylum near Bristol, for over 20 years. Walter Francis Hume retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Indian Army in 1889, is in the 1901 census but not in 1911 or 1921 censuses. He died in 1927 leaving what reads like a perfectly coherent will, at which time he was living in Brislington House.
My question is, were patients in asylums barred from mention in censuses? Any thoughts?

Australia / John Gwennap Hume -- an Indian Army officer in Van Diemen's Land 1839
« on: Thursday 28 September 23 17:12 BST (UK)  »
A simple question -- what would he be doing there? He got married there, apparently, although I haven't been able to find the marriage to see for myself, to Annette Moore on 14 February 1839. Can anyone suggest an answer? I believe he was serving with the 10th Native Infantry at the time, for the East India Company of course at this date.

South Africa / Donald George Walter Hume
« on: Wednesday 20 September 23 08:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello! I've never looked for someone in South African records before and have had very limited success. I'd greatly appreciate your help.
Donald George Walter Hume was born to English parents in Kutch, India, in 1878. The next information I've found about him is marrying Jane Bosbridge Doyle in somewhere I can't read (see pic) in 1907. They had two children, Donald George Arthur Hume and John Douglas Hume. Donald GW Hume was killed on active service according to his South African 'death notice' but I've not been able to find any record of his war service through the UK National Archives or Commonwealth War Graves websites.
I'd particularly like to know about his war service, but also any ideas about what took him to South Africa (where according to the death notice he was an inspector of boilers) would be much appreciated. Can anyone help???
SORRY posted wrong pic! Correct one of marriage certificate has been added ...
