John BAINS ( Herald painter) and Elizabeth Webb RAINER are given as parents of  John BAINS on his marriage certificate in Sydney, Australia 1878.

His place of birth is recorded as London and/or England on all documents located (incliuding his children's birth certs).  From these records his year of birth is 1843 or 1844.

This John Bains was a mariner, an able seaman. and  some 1870s records have been found for him sailing near Australia

I have not been able to find any record of  either John Bains  or Elizabeth Webb Rainer in London (or England for that matter) No birth or marriage certs and would love some help and/or suggestions to locate them in London.
Thanks bertoli

Cavan / McManus & Callaghan Co Cavan
« on: Saturday 22 March 08 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas McManus and Bridget CALLAGHAN (spelling?)of Cavan are known to have had at least 4 children born in Cavan (parish not known): Hugh McManus b. abt 1839, Ellen McManus b. abt 1840,Mary McManus b. abt 1847 and Ann McManus b. abt 1848.
I know about these children because they all migrated to Australia.

It is not known exactly when Ellen arrived in Australia, but she married in South Australia in 1857 and settled in New South Wales in abt 1860. Hugh and his wife Elizabeth O'Donnell and 2 children arrived in NSW in 1884.

Other McManus family settled in South Australia but I do not have any details about them. Looking for any links or info about these families. I know nothing about Bridget Callaghan or her ancestors and am desperate for leads :).

Travelling People / John SUMJOO, circus artist
« on: Sunday 25 March 07 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm having a hard time trying to find John and Elvina SUMJOO.
In 1892 on their daughter Margaret's marriage cert John is recorded as being a circus artist.

I have been able to find three children of John and Elvina in BDM records and the IGI:

John SUMJOO: Born  bef. 28 May 1873 in Portsmouth Hampshire, died bef. Jul 1874 in Portsea, Hampshire

Jennie SUMJOO: died 1st Q 1900 Southampton, Hampshire aged 15

Margaret SUMJOO: m 1892 aged 18,  died 1909 St Pancras London aged 42

Margaret was living at 15 Castle Square Southampton at the time of her marriage.  Her mother Elvina was a witness at the wedding.

In the 1901 census Margaret and husband (Thomas) John HUBBARD (textile dyer) and children were living in St Pancras, London. Both had died by 1909 and their daughters went to Egypt in 1908.

I have not been able to find any BDM or census records for John and Elvina SUMJOO.    They are believed to have been Indian though not sure.  Any ideas about where I might find something?

Australia / Kathleen Marie Rose HEATH
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 05:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm trying to find a death record Kathleen Marie Rose HEATH my grandmother's first daughter from her first marriage. She is a bit of a mystery lady.

Kathleen Marie Rose - known as Marie- was born 15 Jan 1910 in NSW, daughter of Eleanor Veronica Heath (nee Perrin) and John Heath.

Marie's father John Heath died in 1911.  Her mother Eleanor remarried in 1914 to Charles Bains

Marie married Noel Moate in Marrickville NSW in 1929 - she was using the name Heath at the time.
She had three daughters (living), all still in NSW

Marie left her husband and children and lived with  Percy  Honeysett (who also left his wife and children).  Percy Honeysett died in Queensland in 1959 he is buried in Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.   His wife  (?Marie) is believed to have died before him.
Marie and Noel did not divorce and she did not contact her children after she left. Percy Honeysett's first wife  died in Hornsby in 1963.

I have searched the NSW BDM for Marie as well as online cemetery records but no luck.

Marie may have used these names: Heath, Moate, Bains or Honeysett.

I would love to be able to find out where Marie is buried as one of her daughters wants to end the search and visit her grave before she herself dies.

Any ideas as to where else I can look?  Any help, tips etc will be wonderful.

Australia / English passenger records 1890 -1909 online

"Family history buffs to go online
Australian family-tree buffs can avoid dusty boxes of documents and now go online to discover information on the emigration of their ancestors from Britain.

The records of all long-haul ships leaving Britain and Ireland for Australia have been transferred from paper documents at the UK National Archives and put on www.ancestorsonboard.com.

The site has all passenger lists for vessels leaving the UK and Ireland between 1890 and 1909, with full lists reaching up to 1960 to be uploaded in the coming six months.

A basic initial search is free, with a cost levied for more detailed searches if an ancestor shows up in the basic data."

Good news for many of us

Leicestershire / Briggs/Duiett -what am I doing wrong?
« on: Thursday 13 July 06 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm having probs trying to locate my gg grandfather  George Briggs and his parents in Leicestershire records.
George was born in LEICS (on marriage cert) in abt 1830. A newspaper obit in 1914 said that he was born in Piniwick (haven't been able to locate this place)
His parents: Kate Dueitt/Duiett and John Briggs
John Briggs, his wife and 5 children emigrated to Australia on the Poictiers in 1848.
No death/ burial records for Kate Briggs in Australia.  John briggs died in 1888 aged 84  his wife Ann died in 1867 aged 71 - not married in Aust.
I've purchase 3 potential death certs for Kate (2 in aus & 1 ENG) but no luck.
I think that Kate died in England and John remarried.  1841 census not much help but i found a George Briggs aged 11 servant in Winwick Northamptonshire.
Very few records for Duiett in England.  I have  a photo of a young Duiett woman which dates around 1880's but the relative who gave it to me has no idea who she is - photo just has Duiett written on back.

Would anyone be able to steer me towards finding this family.  I've checked the BDM records and have found one other Kate who died in 1839 maybe this is her but i have no way of verifying that( plus the mistakes are starting to get expensive)
Sorry about the long post but wanted to save unnecessary lookups.

I'd be grateful for any advice as I've been chasing this family for years.

Australia Lookups completed / Elusive BRIGGS - how can I find them?
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 02:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone.
I'm absolutely begging for help on this one.

John Briggs, his wife and five children arrived in South Australia on the  "Poictiers"  from London via Plymouth in 1848.
My gg grandfather George was one of those children.  He married Ellen Mc Manus and ended up living in Young New South Wales.

I have as many certs relating to George as I can get and have lots of info about his time in Australia and his descendants.   I can't find any info about his father John Briggs, the remaining children or his mother Kate (Duiett).

The place of birth on George's death cert is Leicestershire.  His year of birth could be anywhere between 1829 1nd 1832 as different ages are on each source of info.

I haven't been able to find any Duiett's in the IGI and other databases that I've checked out.

Any ideas about how I can find out info about the remaining family who arrived in SA  and about ancestors in the UK?
TIA
ciao Bertoli
