Midlothian / Angus-Reid? (Peterson)

I'm desperate 
for any ideas
Through the LHSarchive, they have confirmed the birth of my gdfather, both from the register & case book of The Edinburgh Royal Maternity & Simpson Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, there is no birth cert., no marriage for his mother or her death anywhere on SP, regardless of area!!
Details I have are James Angus b. 8.00am 4th Jan. 1868, mother unmarried, Ann Angus, her father James Angus, her mother Mary Moffat, father as named William Reid (Engineer) Mussleburgh. The rest of the family all check out and Ann is last found on the 1861 census for Contin ROC, after 1868 she vanishes & William Reid is a complete mystery!!
Because of old letters of gdf I have traced him to a family called Peterson from Shetalnd where he is listed with 3 others as a "boarder" aged 3 in the 1871 census & at 14 a scholar in the 1881 census.
Addresses are 48, Buccleuch St & 9 Orwell Place, both Edinburgh.
From the family I know in the 30's his 2 brothers? arrived to see him in London, one was a Gilly, but nobody knew their names, so no joy there!!
Any thoughts would be very very welcome, I'm just going round in circles!! I don't understand this "boarder" system, the Peterson's were not family so somebody must have paid for keep and I imagine his school. Anybody know if there might be records for children boarders anywhere?
