Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / What Date Is This Photo?
« on: Wednesday 26 September 12 04:00 BST (UK)  »
Any suggestions on the date of this photo?

If it is the person I think it is, he was born in 1904 and died in 1933, if that helps.

Or could it be his father born 1865 and died in 1911?

Thank you.

Cheshire / Chester Gaol at Chester Castle
« on: Thursday 20 January 11 02:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have been to the Record Office looking for a relative (Richard Ruscoe) who was transported from Chester in 1833. I have previously found when and where he was transported (Australia) but I can't find any information about his conviction. A very helpful person at the Record Office pointed me in the right direction for looking up gaol records, but they only hold the ones for Chester City Gaol and as he does not appear on those records, he thinks that he was held at the Gaol at Chester Castle, which I believe was known as the County Gaol. But they don't have those records at the Record Office.
Does anyone know where I might find the Chester Castle (County) Gaol records? Are they available to the general public?
I did find a document which listed Richard Ruscoe, along with 6 other men, who were to 'be removed with all convenient speed' to a hulk ship in Gosport, so I know that he was sent from Chester.
I even looked at the Chester Chronicle for the date nearest his conviction, and although I found reports on the crimes of 4 of the 7 who were sent together, Richard and the other 2 men do not appear to have been named and shamed in the Chester Chronicle! I don't know if the other 2 were involved in Richard's crime, which was stealing money, or if he was acting alone.
Can anyone help with the County Gaol records?
Thank you,
Pippa

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Restore Old Manor House
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 04:28 BST (UK)  »
Would it be possible to restore this photo of the Manor. I believe my grandfather may have developed this photo himself, but was experimenting with the necessary chemicals and fixer, hence the blotchy appearance!
I would be very grateful if someone could improve this photo.

Photo taken in 1915 soon after he joined up. He was in the Army Service Corps - Motor Transport Division.

When I found this photo it was stuck to another and as I peeled them apart this is what happened!

Thank you,

Occupation Interests / Cow & Calf Pillion
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 00:47 BST (UK)  »
In the Will of my 4 x great grandfather he has left a 'Cow & Calf Pillion and Pillion Cloth' to his daughter-in-law. He was a Farmer by trade and the will was written in 1813. What would these items be?

Also in a much earlier will - 1616 - my relative was a Husbandman and left to his son, amongst other things, 'all his carts, plough, yooks and playne'. What would a yook and a playne be?

Thank you.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Are These Ladies Related?
« on: Monday 02 August 10 08:05 BST (UK)  »
I would be interested in people's opinions on these photos.

The girl in the centre is my grandmother aged 17 and again aged about 30 on the right.

The old picture on the left is possibly her grandmother. This is a glass plate (or ambrotype).

Do you think they could be relatives? I thought the nose could be similar.

Thanks for looking.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What Are These Initials?
« on: Wednesday 09 June 10 13:51 BST (UK)  »
My sister bought an old bridle for her Suffolk Punch horse, and she has asked me to post this picture of the initials on the blinkers.

No family interest attached to the initials, she would just like to know what they are.

Thank you.

I am hoping this photo is of my great great granddad, but I am not sure.

He died in 1869 aged 49. Would this photo fit in with this information?

He lived all his life in Chester, which is what gave me a clue that it may be him in the photo as it has a Chester photographer's name on it - W Speed.

I apologise for the quality, I don't have the original. It is a photocopy of a photocopy of the original.
