Glamorganshire / Orphan William Allen
« on: Tuesday 23 March 21 18:33 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyway can get me out of a mind fog as I seem to be going round in circles looking for my husband's Gt. Grandfather William Allen. On the 39 Register he gives his d.of b. as 21.7.1862 where he is living with his married daughter Gladys Griffith in Swansea. I cannot find any BMD that fits if I take a Glamorgan registration District. Fortunately I was able to find his marriage to Ann Davies 28.12.1883 in Llangafelach where he states he is 22 (one would assume he'd had his birthday that year which then puts it at 1861) and here I then see that there is no father on the marriage certificate.

Trawling Ancestry I come upon Poor Law documents for 1872 and 1873 in the Hamlet of Mawr which I know covers Llangafelach and William Allen is an orphan aged 11 and 12 respectively (b.1861?) and subsequently find an 1871 Census: Mawr Higher, Glandulais, Llangafelach, John Thomas 28 Coal Miner, Mary Thomas 29 wife, William, 9 Foster Child. Fortunately this ties up as John Thomas is a witness at his wedding in 1883, unfortunately John Thomas doesn't put a place of birth. After his marriage I can follow all the 3 census where he swings mostly from being 28,39, living in Swansea then in 1911 he changes 48 to 49 and has moved to Ammanford. Also his places of birth vary too!

Am I assuming too much that his birth is in Glamorgan? Having trawled the BMD for any births anywhere in a July-September quarter 1860,61 and 62 nothing seems to fit. I am running out of options as to where to carry on my search plus being slightly hampered by the Welsh place names! My assumption is that sometime after his birth, possibly his mother died, making him an orphan taken into care as an "Outdoor Pauper" as the Poor Law register states, although the place stated as resident is Rhyd ??

I really would appreciate any help in trying to find him because until I do I cannot progress in my research any further. Many thanks.

Canada Lookup Request / Sgt. Harold David Westley Royal Canadian Air Force
« on: Sunday 30 June 19 16:39 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother's brother Percy Westley emigrated to Canada long before the second world war. His son Harold David Westley b. 3.4.1923 in Vancouver joined the Royal Canadian Air Force; his Attestation papers being stamped 5th November 1942. At that time he stated he was single and his next of kin was his mother Rose Adelaide Westley living at 2392 Linden Avenue Vancouver, his father having passed away in 1934.

On 29th January 1944 he was in a Wellington aircraft at Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire and during a training operation, the pilot practising solo circuits and landings dived into the ground and the the aircraft caught fire. All the four crew members were killed. Harold is buried in Botley Cemetery, Oxfordshire aged 20.

On the CWGC it states that his wife Maurine Westley is his next of kin. I would like if possible someone to find the marriage, sometime between November 1942 and January 1944 and if there was a child at all. I am assuming she was Canadian as I can't find a marriage here in England.

Many thanks.

United States of America / Benjamin Rowe -Mystery on Bald Mountain, Colorado
« on: Thursday 20 September 18 20:10 BST (UK)  »
My gt. gt. grandfather Benjamin Rowe  was born illegitimately in Sithney, Cornwall to Jane Rowe in 1822. He married Mary Ann Lawry in 1847 and was a tin miner. He appears on the 1871 census in St. Just but disappears, leaving his wife a widow by the 1881 census.

By luck during one research session I came across a Letters of Administration of his personal estate, stating the Benjamin Rowe late of Bald Mountain, Colorado died on the 27th January 1876 and was a Farmer (surprise!) His probate was granted to Mary Ann Rowe as the lawful widow.

As I was not sure which county in Colorado Bald Mountain was in, I contacted Boulder FHS for some advice if they could point me in the right direction to find his death and burial. Unfortunately they were not that helpful and informed me that there were 27 local Bald Mountains but there was a 13,000 foot peak called Bald Mountain situated in Summit County.

Benjamin Rowe now sits behind a brick wall unfortunately unless anyone can kindly suggest where I go next! Many thanks

Leicestershire / Slater Street School
« on: Saturday 01 September 18 00:14 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out what school my father went to as a boy from around 1916 if he attended at 5 years of age. I am assuming he went to the same school as me as he lived in the same house as a child. Could someone point me in the right direction to find the school log books of Slater Street School as I'm not sure if the school or a record office would have them. Many thanks. (I might add I do not live in Leicester now so am not local to finding these records.)

Warwickshire / John Henry and Beatrice Jane C.M. Crisp
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 13:16 GMT (UK)  »
I am having trouble finding any information from 1901 to 1938 for this couple.

John Henry Crisp b.1869 Lilbourne, Rubgy married Beatrice Jane Christiana Mary King in Sutton Coldfield in 1898 and had a child Muriel Annie in Dec. qtr 1899. Before he married John Henry had on 3.12.1891 joined the Royal Engineers, Birmingham aged 22yrs. 11 mths. as a carpenter.
On the 1901 census: Beatrice Crisp 25, Reservist Pay, Muriel 1, East Lynn, Boldmere Road, Sutton Coldfield, Warwks. I assume John Henry is away with his Unit.

Then all information seems to come to a halt. I cannot find anyone on the 1911 census and I know why they are not on the 1939 Register. On 2.11.1938 on the Ship Esperance Bay – Departure from Southampton, Mr. John H. Crisp – Scot’s Arms Hotel, Great Barr, Birmingham, landing in Fremantle, Western Australia – Retired aged 70. Mrs. Beatrice Crisp, same address, Housewife 63 and I have no idea what happened to Muriel as she is not sailing with them.

I am also interested in why they gave their address as Scot's Arms Hotel, Great Barr on the ship's manifest (although looking it up I see it is Scott Arms) Were they the proprietors of this establishment? Or had they sold up before embarking on their voyage to Australia and were just staying there until the ship sailed?

Any help in filling in the gaps would be extremely appreciated. Many thanks.

United States of America / Death on Bare Mountain Colorado
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 23:25 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to the new Probate/Wills site that has now become available from 1858 -1996, after 15 years of searching I have found the death of my gt. gt. grandfather Benjamin Rowe. He was born in 1822 at Sithney.

There does not appear to be a Will but on 1st May 1876 the administration of the effects of Benjamin Rowe formerly of St. Just in Penwith in the County of Cornwall but late of Bald Mountain, Colorado in the USA, Farmer who died 27.1.1876 at Bald Mountain was granted principal registry to Mary Ann Rowe of St. Just, widow of relict.

I knew he was on the English census for 1871 in St. Just and that his wife was a widow by 1881 but I had no information as to when he actually went to America. Ellis Island records were of no help. I am surprised that he left Cornwall as a tin miner yet he is listed as a farmer in a place that sounds ripe for mining.

Looking at Colorado genealogy online I am somewhat confused about how I could find out the circumstances of his death, especially regarding the geography of Colorado.  The information given suggests I have to find the County he died in which isn't obvious however closely I study a map. At the moment Summit County seems to be a good bet but I don't know if I am correct or what I do now.

Any help and guidance would be extremely welcome! Many thanks.

Leicestershire / Barwell Street?
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 17:06 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone enlighten me as to where Barwell Street was in Leicester?

On the 1911 census my great aunt and her family were living at number 10. I have looked on my old street map and also on a 1912 Kelly's directory listing streets but cannot find it. I even Googled it but to no avail.

As a lot of the family lived in the St. Leonard's Parish area I wondered if they did too.

So, I would be extremely grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.

Many thanks.

London and Middlesex / Paddington Green Children's Hospital, Paddington.
« on: Monday 25 August 14 12:27 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my great grandmother's younger sister Kezia Casley and find that on the 1911 census she is in Paddington Green Children's Hospital (as Kesiah!). My problem with this is that when looking at the patients of which she was one, they were all women. She was also 38 at the time.

I have Googled the hospital which doesn't give me any more information, which is surprising and I am trying to work out a timeline if my great aunt was pregnant and this was a hospital for mothers having babies. The majority of the patients like Kezia were single but there was the odd married woman too. I ran off at least five pages of census but was finding the cost prohibitive, that I went on to the transcription to find the name of the institution.

I know the census was 31st March in 1911 and in the July her mother at the age of 83 died. The newspaper clipping in The Cornishman - Kezia had travelled to London from St. Just which made me wonder about a pregnancy- stated that her daughter Kezia was unable to attend.

I perused the BMD to see if I could find any children registered in Paddington with the surname Casley 1911/12 but no avail. Unfortunately come the February of 1912 Kezia passed away back in Cornwall aged 39.

I have just sent for the death certificate and wondered if anyone could enlighten me on why she could have been so far away from home?

Many thanks.

United States of America / Benjamin Rowe buried in Nevada?
« on: Thursday 19 May 11 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find out if the only visible grave recorded in Columbus Cemetery, Esmeralda County, Nevada is that of my gt. gt. grandfather Benjamin Rowe?

Unfortunately there are no dates visible. Would there be a burial book of sorts kept at the cemetery? Details such as nationality, date of birth and any possible relatives listed as being responsible/contacted regarding the burial would be useful.

He was a Cornish tin miner born in 1822 and I know that he died in Nevada between 1871 and 1881 but I have been unable to find his death recorded. If this grave is my ancestor who do I contact?

I did find that the LDS Cemetery Records quote Vol. 5 page 309 Columbus Cemetery but I can get no further in my research.

I live in England and would greatly appreciate any assistance.
