Sussex / information pre 1841 census and old workhouse buxted
« on: Sunday 18 December 16 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I have a couple of queries, I have a relative (Judith Tourle) whose parents and brother all(inconveniently for me for census info) died in 1840 in Buxted! This left her with 3 young children and no husband (oops). I have found her in the 1841 census at Redbrook and it states her (on The Weald website) as being independent? Would this mean her parents owned a property or would it be a landowner kept her on?

Also in 1851 she's stated as living in Old Workhouse Buxted with new husband and lots more children, is this an actual workhouse or just the name of the place it used to be? Her husband James Seamer/Seymour  is quoted as being a Farm labourer,

Many thanks and happy Christmas

Canada Lookup Request / ALBERT GRAY
« on: Tuesday 13 September 16 13:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for any information on my great Uncle Albert Gray,(1888-1982) who moved to Canada around 1908-1912 from Kent. I know he married an Elizabeth Wellcoat in 1913 and died in Canada in 1982, but know very little of his life. I believe he was in the Royal Medical Corps in the War but know nothing after that.

Any help greatly appreciated!
Many thanks

Kent / pollington death in pembury workhouse
« on: Tuesday 27 October 15 17:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Can anyone help? My ancestor Henry Pollington born abt 1826 in Speldhurst appears to have died in the Tonbridge Union Workhouse (sandhill) in 1882. He was married to Harriet Puttock. Does anyone know whether he did die here or how I can find out. Also any ideas on where he might be buried. Not sure what happens when someone dies in the workhouse.

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / deaths in buxted in 1840
« on: Tuesday 01 September 15 12:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi can someone help!

I seem to have quite a few relatives that died in Buxted or Uckfield in the year 1840 and was just wondering if anyone knew if anything dramatic happened that year to cause the deaths or if its just a coincidence!

Thanks
Lisa

Family History Beginners Board / Stuck on my Tourle ancestors
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm completely new on here and not at all sure how it works!  I am currently researching my ancestors on a commercial website but have got stuck as I cannot find any evidence of the birth of my ?x great grandfather William Knight Tourle (and therefore can't progress any further)  - I think it may of been around 1774 in either Buxted or Lewes, but cannot find any definite records or proof.  He was the father of William Knight Tourle (1808-1840) and quite a few others!

I'd also be very interested to know where any of the Tourle's are buried.

Many thanks ;)
