The Lighter Side / Memorial for many ~ Spanish accident 1959
« on: Monday 03 September 07 23:15 BST (UK)  »
I have been to Brookwood cemetery today and spotted two memorials relating to air accidents. One relating to an Iberia flight from Malaga to London that crashed near Fernhurst, Sussex. The other was an Air Ferry DC-4 that crashed in the Pyrenees the same year.

However, next to these two memorials is one entitled "In Memory of those who died as a result of an accident in Spain on 19th August 1959".

28 people are listed and at least two were medical students.

Does anyone have any idea on this? I do not have a plane crash for this day, so perhaps a coach crash or hotel blaze perhaps?

I don't think there is necessarily a link with the local area.

Thanks

The Common Room / Weddings in Newspapers
« on: Tuesday 20 June 06 23:55 BST (UK)  »
I am just wondering how many people have looked through old newspapers to find wedding reports - I'm talking 'ordinary' families here of course.

Was it regular practice for working class families to have their wedding reported or even announced in the local paper 90 years ago? I have a wedding photo from 1915  and would like to know who the bridesmaid was, and in another, I am just trying to get my hands on an exact date.

I have a scan from the 1861 census showing Elizabeth Pettitt at 1, Frederick Place, Hackney.

She is listed at the very top of the page as 'Wife'  so I'm wondering if her husband is at the bottom of the previous page?

The reference is RG9/156 page 24

Could some kind soul check this out for me please?

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Wiseman 1861/1871
« on: Saturday 08 October 05 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Can any kind soul help me trace my Wiseman family from Norwich

In 1851 I have:-

William Wiseman - head - 43
Caroline Wiseman - wife - 42
Mary Ann Wiseman - daughter - 12
George Wiseman - son - 11
Sarah Ann Wiseman - daughter - 9 months

In 1851 they were living in Gas Hill, Norwich. The next bit of information I have is in 1881 when Caroline is a widow in the Great Hospital. Sarah Ann was also there at that time.

Can anybody find them in 1861 or 1871?

Many Thanks,

Ray

Devon / Halletts Court, Tiverton
« on: Tuesday 10 May 05 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My Grandfather's wartime identity card has recently come into my custody and I've learnt that during 1944 he convalesced at 4 Halletts Court, Tiverton. His main residence was Homerton in London.

I think he "only" suffered shock, but I'd be interested to know more about this place and if anyone could enlighten me on the wartime policy for such sufferers - would it had been a private house comandeered, or would he have been just a boarder in a private house?

Many Thanks,

Ray

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Robert LINDLEY of Lambeth circa 1830
« on: Friday 22 April 05 14:41 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the death of Robert Lindley from Lambeth.

I know that he married Mary Ann Williams at St Mary's Lambeth 12 Oct 1828, but she re-married in 1836, then being a widow.

I cannot trace any children from them.

Thanks,

Ray

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / 1851 look up - SPLATT - Lambeth
« on: Friday 15 April 05 18:24 BST (UK)  »
I have a Mary Ann Splatt and Francis Splatt living in Bridge Street, Lambeth - they should be there in 1851.

There's a possibility they may be down as Splate.

I'd love a transcription of the entry, especially noting her place of birth and age. I would expect her to be around 50.

Thanks

Can anyone help me with members of the SPLATT family living in the Lambeth and Camberwell areas in 1841, 1851 and 1861?

The information I have is:-

Francis Splatt (probably born in Devon?)
Mary Ann Splatt

who were the parents of

John Splatt born Bridge Street, Lambeth 1838
Mary Ann Splatt born Lambeth circa 1845

The two children lived in Camberwell in 1871 (more specifically 4 Culmore Rd in 1881)

Many Thanks for anything you can dig out for me,

Ray

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / SELINA BRETT NASH - 1861/1871 CENSUS
« on: Monday 10 January 05 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to trace Selina Brett Nash in the 1871 census. She would have been about 10.

Her mother was Martha Nash then aged 48; her father was George Nash but am unsure of his age.

Sisters were Elizabeth Sarah (14), Amelia (15) and Mary Ann (18), but there may have been some other siblings too. These may have been older so maybe will only show up in the 1861 census.

Any help in either census would be great.
