World War Two / Merchant Navy Discharge number query
« on: Thursday 17 August 23 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Whilst on a seemingly endless search for my Grandfather's Merchant Navy records, I came across a discharge number on the NA which may be his but it may also have been mistranscribed. Sadly, only the medal card can be downloaded and I have no idea how else to locate further info without a visit to London.

His alias (don't ask!) was Thomas John Jones and his alleged (again, don't ask) D.o.B was 01.07.1918. He was from Tonypandy, Glamorgan...(well, actually Trealaw, but yeah...don't ask!)

I have found a medal card for a Thomas William Jones born 01.07.1918 with the discharge number R.251398, however, when I downloaded it, 'William' has been added retrospectively in pen. A further search of this discharge number came up with two results for a Thomas John Jones, born 1917, in Pony Pandy...their typo, not mine.

It is a long shot, but I think there may be some slim chance this is my grandfather but how can I locate any more info?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Kindest regards,

Colleen

The Common Room / Another census headache - 1921
« on: Monday 14 August 23 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am at my wits' end looking for my G Grandparents in the 1921 census and am hoping someone can give me some pointers please as I know the area they were in prior to, and after this date and their details but cannot find them anywhere!
All persons are deceased.

From 1918-1920 family were at 56 Eleanor Street, Tonypandy (with Thomas E's parents)
In April 1920 they were at Ynyscynon Road with a member of Mary Maria's family (number not known but I have checked them all!)
In 1925 they were at 46-47 Hendrecafn Road, Trealaw (a lodging house where Mary died).

Thomas Edward Jones b.1898 Tonypandy, Pontypridd
Mary Maria Jones nee Allen b. 1896 Llywynpia, Pontypridd
Thomas James Jones b.1918 Trealaw, Pontypridd

Any help whatsoever would be great because I have spent a fortune and am pulling my hair out with this one!

Thanks,

Colleen

« on: Tuesday 25 July 23 18:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

We have recently received my husband's grandfather's war records and we are having some difficulty tracing details on the squadrons and regiments he was listed as being in. We really would like to unpack some of the details a little more with war diaries etc., if possible.

The documents were printed on A3 so we cannot scan them in, but this is what we have learned so far about his service:

*UPDATED WITH SOME EXTRA INFORMATION*

Please could anyone give us a little more info about his time in North Africa and where he would have been between joining up and arriving in Oran, please?

Thanks,

« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 21:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Please can anyone advise what (if anything) someone who was born in France in 1846 would have needed to move to Guernsey in the 1850s/60s?

Thanks,

Colleen

The Common Room / British Newspaper Search
« on: Saturday 09 January 21 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am wondering if anybody would be kind enough to transcribe a record for me on the xxxxxx
I don't have the relevant subscription to view a record but I so rarely use the newspaper search that it isn't viable for me to upgrade. The record is for Thomas James Jones and he is appearing in 1936 in the Western Daily Press.

Please can you help?

Kind regards,

Colleen

Hello all,

I have been searching for records for my G G Uncle, Justinian H Jones, who was born in 1912 in Pontypridd. Aside from his birth record, I am unable to locate any other information about him after his birth, despite extensive searches. I am hoping another set of eyes may help!

Please can you help find Justinian?

Thanks,

Lancashire / Missing ancestor
« on: Tuesday 28 May 19 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am trying, to no avail, to locate the whereabouts of my husband's GG Aunt, Caroline Elizabeth Brooks. Caroline was born 06/11/1891 in Bootle. She was a twin and she was disabled however her disability is not listed on any of the censuses.

After 1911 Caroline doesn't appear in any electoral searches, however her twin Louisa Rickard Constable (nee Brooks) took out an insurance policy on Caroline in 1930 and she is listed as living with Louisa and Louisa's husband Thomas at 68 Adlam Road, Toxteth.

There are no other records for Caroline and I can't locate a marriage or death record for her. She seems to have just disappeared!

Please can anyone help me find her?

Many thanks,

Colleen
