World War Two / Why wouldn’t my seemingly fit uncle be serving
« on: Saturday 22 March 25 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.  My granduncle was a civilian killed age 40 in 1941 when his house was bombed during the blitz in Portsmouth.  His death certificate states he is a tailors presser, and he appears to have been fit and healthy from what my Nan used to say (though I understand of course he may not have been).  Can I find out why he wasn’t serving in some capacity?  Are there records for this, or will it remain a mystery? Thank you for any suggestions 😊

Ireland / Minor marrying
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 11:56 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,  I have the marriage certificate for my great grandparents in Athlone 1889, William George Smith and Anne Obrien who was 17 and listed as a minor.  Would there be a record anywhere of parental permission being given? I’m trying to find out more info regarding Anne as she’s something of a brick wall, despite doing DNA.  Her father is named as John Obrien, labourer, on the marriage certificate.

Somerset / Ancestor hung at Taunton Gaol
« on: Wednesday 29 March 23 15:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My 3rd great aunt, Catherine Churchill, was hung at Taunton Gaol on 26 May 1879 for murdering her husband.  I was wondering if there would be a record as to where she was buried in the prison grounds and if it was possible to visit, though it’s probably a car park by now 😕.  Also, am I able to find a lpc4 form anywhere, detailing the drop etc of her hanging?  I obtained records from National Archives about the court case, but this form wasn’t part of it.  Thank you for any advice!

I would be grateful for some help with the occupation and business name where a 15 year old girl was working please.  I think it says meat factory (packer in), next column is something like E Clarkose Ltd meat drapers?

The Common Room / Unknown in the birth records
« on: Tuesday 05 May 20 18:11 BST (UK)  »
At the end of each quarters birth registrations there are several 'unknown' male and female babies, sometimes with a first name.  Is there any way to find out what happened to these?  There probably isn't, but it's always worth asking!

World War Two / Uniform ID
« on: Tuesday 07 January 20 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  I have this photo of my grandad in civilian clothes with a group of people, one of which may be his brother.  I was wondering if there is enough detail in the pictures to determine what the uniforms are please.  My grandad lived in Portsmouth UK and was himself in the Coldstream Guards.  Thank you for any help.

« on: Thursday 19 April 18 20:14 BST (UK)  »
Good evening,

I am trying to find out about my grandfathers time in the Coldstream Guards and wonder if anyone has access to any records. I am unable to spare £30 for the MoD search currently.

His details are:

George Henry Walden
b. 11 Nov 1910
m. 1 Aug 1942 (Mabel Rosetta Clark)
d. 12 Jun 1976

On his marriage certificate it states he is a Private in the Coldstream Guards.  He was born and lived in Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Any information or guidance would be gratefully received.

Julie
