Devon / The mysterious Wall family of Plymouth
« on: Wednesday 21 January 15 14:34 GMT (UK)  »
Albert Edward M Wall was born in 1883 in Devonport (Jun 1883 Stoke Damerel 5b 313) and died in Plymouth in 1963.  He married a Violet Hancock in 1910.

His father was George Wall born in 1865 in Devonport who died in Plymouth in 1943 and, it is understood, married a Mary Blight Toleman (b 1863 Plymouth) in 1882 in Stoke Damerel (Jun 1882 SD 5b 657).

He can be found on the 1891 census with Mary and his sons.

However, I can't find a birth record for either George Wall or Mary Blight Toleman.

I have a feeling that George might have changed his name from Watts (with a link to Charles Watts born 1825 in Jersey) to Wall but can find nothing definitive so would appreciate any help offered with this one.

Thanks

Devon / Help with the Bealey family - Great Torrington and Exeter
« on: Sunday 11 January 15 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have the following info but can't find anything else about the family at the mo and would greatly appreciate some help, please, if anyone can.

John Crabb Bealey, a plasterer born in 1840 (can't find a birth) in Exeter who married three times -
Mary Rebecca Darby (1840-1887) in 1862 in Exeter;
Sarah Caroline Lemon (1849-1896) in 1889 in Exeter; and
Eliza Read in 1906 in Cheshunt.  This marriage gives his father's name as Philip Bealey.

Philip Bealey, mason, (b.1810 Great Torrington d. 2/2/1880 Exeter) married Mary Crabb (1809-1880) on 16/12/1833 at St Mary Major, Exeter.

I found a baptism at Great Torrington for a Philip Bailey on 11/2/1810, which I think is my Philip, to a James Bailey and Elizabeth but nothing further in the parish and no birth marriage for James.

Does anyone recognise these folk or have anything more on the family, please?

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Help please. What happened to the Barkers?
« on: Monday 24 September 12 22:03 BST (UK)  »
Evening all.

The 1911 census shows the following were living at 291 Radford Boulevard, Nottingham

Margaret Ada Barker Head     30 (b 1880) single a newsagent    Nottingham
Mary Ann Barker        Mother  54 (b 1857) widow housekeeper   Nottingham
Thomas Barker          Brother  24 (b 1886) single chairmaker       Nottingham
Hilda Barker               Sister    17 (b 1893) single  typist               Nottingham

A trade directory shows that Margaret Ada was still in business as a confectioner/newsagent in 1919.

I am trying to find out the death dates for Margaret and Mary Ann
and any marriage/death dates for Thomas, Hilda and their brother Charles (born 1885, Nottingham)
or military links for the boys.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

World War Two / Tracing John Collins Lancaster gunner
« on: Tuesday 03 July 12 23:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Ok, the family tale goes that John Collins, born in Exeter in 1917 (to John Collins and Ada (Gove)) was a gunner in a Lancaster bomber who was killed over Germany and buried there in or around 1942.

The trouble is that I can find no record of anything on the CWGC site or anywhere else and would really appreciate some help finding him.

Thanks all

I would appreciate help deciphering the attached.

While I can understand most of it, I am not quite sure of the date of birth/baptism or the notes in the margin.

Thanks

Hi

The attached medal record shows the rank as Ldg Sea, which, I understand, is Leading Seaman but what does (Jg) mean?

World War Two / U-boat surrender at Flensburg 1945
« on: Tuesday 13 March 12 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Am trying to find out more details about the German U-boat surrender at Flensburg in 1945, as I am told an uncle was there.  Internet searches give the date, the numbers of the U-boats that surrendered, including those in the 19th Flotilla, and that it was actually at Keil, Germany but little else.

Does anyone know whether Flensburg/Keil is the same place or rather two events (Flensburg was where the surrender was signed), to whom the Germans surrendered, what allied ships were there or any other details, please?

Thanks
