Caernarvonshire / Roberts family of Caerhun
« on: Sunday 07 June 20 16:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me with the following, please.

John Roberts born 1879 is listed in the 1911 Census for Caerhun. His address is Pistyll Du Roewen Talycefn Rso, Caerhun. I am completely baffled by this and would appreciate any help that's offered.

On the same census his place of birth is given as Llansant. I cannot find any reference to that and wonder if it should be Llanrwst.

He has two sons, Caradog b.1910 and male b.1911 not Christened.

Also staying with him is his mother Jane born 1938 in Cerrigydrudion, Denbighshire.

Naturally, if anyone knows this family I'd love to be in touch.

Kind regards,
Jack

Can anyone help me please with information about Lawn House, Rowley Park? When she emigrated in 1923, Nellie Beardmore gave this as her last address in the UK.

Staffordshire / John E Carter buried 1919 Whittington St Giles
« on: Sunday 21 October 18 14:13 BST (UK)  »
John Elias Carter was born in Lincolnshire or Cambridgeshire and served during WW11 with the 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He was awarded the Military Medal in 1917. He died 11 March 1919 and was buried at Whittington St Giles. What I'm trying to find out is why he was buried there when his family, wife Charlotte and son Desmond, were still in the Lincolnshire/Cambridgeshire area. Can anyone help please?

Stirlingshire / Falkirk Grammar School
« on: Wednesday 04 January 17 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across a newspaper article dated 30 April 1834 which reports the death of one of my ancestors, Anne Reid, spouse of Thomas Gibson AM, Rector of the Falkirk Grammar School.

Does anyone know of a written history of the Grammar School, please? Perhaps there are a biographies of the Rectors.

Additionally, can anyone please say what the suffix AM stands for?

Midlothian / East Bowden(?), Musselburgh

In the 1851 census for Shilbottle, Northumberland I've got my 2g grandfather James Renwick with his wife Mary and children.  Her place of birth is given as East Bowden, Musselburgh but I can find no reference to this place.  Neither can I find her birth on SP.  From the census returns it would be about 1802.  Can anyone help, please?

Lancashire / Baker and Confectioner in Oldham
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 14:07 BST (UK)  »
I've got a member of the Hewitt family who, on the 1938 birth certificate of her daughter, gives her own occupation as "Baker and Confectioner".  On her 1943 death certificate she is also listed as having the same occupation.  Can anyone tell me please if there were any bakers and confectioners, perhaps within walking distance or a tram ride away from Colwyn Street?

Regards, Jack

Lancashire / Electoral rolls for Oldham
« on: Friday 25 April 14 10:57 BST (UK)  »
I’m helping a friend, who was adopted shortly after birth, to research her natural family and I would like to try and keep the surname hidden for the moment; perhaps if there is any progress it can be revealed in a private message.  Unusually, she has her birth certificate so she knows the name of her natural mother (the father’s name is not on the BC).  The BC gives her place of birth as 5 Latham Road, Southport.  Am I correct in assuming that this is Lathom Road?  The informant’s address is given as 14 Colwyn Street, Oldham.  The informant has the same name as the mother and is described as a baker & confectioner.  My friend has always understood that her mother gave her up for adoption because she was judged to be too young to keep her.  If she was too young then, surely, she is unlikely to be described as a baker & confectioner.  Could this be her mother (my friend’s grandmother)?  I’ve hunted through the census returns for the Oldham address and can find no mention of her birth surname associated with it.  Are there any Rootschatters with access to the electoral rolls who could help to identify the surname of the person at 14 Colwyn Street, Oldham in 1938, please? This would show if it was her mother as she would be too young to vote.  I know it’s a long shot but desperate times call for desperate measures.
One more thing, the Church of England Children’s Society may have been involved in the adoption so I’m wondering if 5 Lathom Road was one of their homes.
