Lanarkshire / John Acton & Mary Doyle marriage.
« on: Monday 27 August 18 19:44 BST (UK)  »
John Acton was baptised on 6 July 1834 in Avoca, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.  The next record I can find for him is when his first son Dennis is born on 8 July 1858 is Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland.  His wife is given as Mary Doyle.

I have had no luck finding an entry for the marriage of John and Mary in Ireland, and was wondering if perhaps they moved and married in Scotland, or maybe met in Scotland.  Dna Matches would indicate John was my 3 rd gt uncle, but if I could see his parents name in a record it would confirm the family link.

Thanks for any help with this matter.

Westmeath / Lough Park, Castlepollard
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 22:51 BST (UK)  »
On my gt grandmother Bridget Murray’s birth certificate 11 July 1864 it gives the family address as Lough Park. Looking online I see a large 2 storey house showing as Lough Park (it appears to be between Castlepollard and Collinstown) As her father’s occupation is given as a labourer I am presuming he worked for the owners of the house. Does anybody have any history of the place and who lived there in the 1860s?
Thanks.

Bedfordshire / William Bolus/Bowlas/Bowles, Amphill,
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 23:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am trying to find out what became of William Bolus/Bowlas/Bowles who from what I can find out was born in Bedfordshire in 1847.  From the various records I have seen, place names such as Amphill, Maulden, Meppershall and Shillington appear.  For those who know the area, are some of these sub districts of the others or administrative districts etc.

Here is what I have so far about William in England.

From freebmd a William Bowlas b. Sept. 1847 Ampthill, Bedfordshire.
That would be William Bowlas, b. July 18, 1847 bp. Mar. 21, 1858 Maulden, Bedford; parents: William Bowlas and Hannah Rainbow.

1851 Census of Meppershall, Bedfordshire
William Bolus  Head  Marr.  37  Blacksmith  b. Silsoe
Hannah Bolus  wife   Marr.  29  Blacksmith’s wife  b. Meppershall
Joseph Bolus    son                  5  Blacksmith’s son  b. Shillington
William Bolus  son                   3  Blacksmith’s son  b. Shillington

1861 Census of Ampthill, Bedfordshire, Dunstable St. Union Workhouse
William Bowlas  pauper inmate Male  14  b. Maulden, Bedfordshire
Mary Bowlas  pauper inmate  Female 9 b. Maulden, Bedfordshire

1871 Census Chelsea, London
William Bolus  Male  22  unmarried  Private Coldstream Guards  Soldier  b. 1849 Meppenhall, Bedfordshire.

From what I can find out only one William Bolus was in the Coldstream Guards at this time.  A William Bolus married Margaret Ryan on 23 February 1873 in Dublin, and the Second Battalion of the Coldstream Guards were stationed in Dublin then.  So this would appear to be the William I am looking for as his marriage cert gives his father as William, a blacksmith (same occupation as in the 1851 census) but alas the father's home town is not given so I can't be 100% this is the correct William. The Guards departed Dublin soon after, and William and Margaret's first child, also William was not born until 31 December 1877.  The father's occupation is given as shoemaker.

There were two subsequent sons born to them, Thomas born is 1879 (can't find a cert for him) and John on 3 July 1883 in the South Dublin Workhouse and the father's occupation is given as a soldier, yet Margaret gives her status as widow on this very same day, when she enters the workhouse.  We can't find any references to William passing away in the 9 months before John was born.

A Corporal William Bowles who joined the Royal Irish Regiment on Jan. 7, 1882 was discharged on Aug. 10, 1886 for being medically unfit and we can find no more records for William after this.  I am not sure if this is my William Bolus/Bowlas/Bowles or alternatively his death was not recorded in Ireland before the birth of John.

If anyone can give me any more information regarding what my have become of him and the area he came from it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mark

Meath / Murphy family, Clongiffin, Enfield.
« on: Monday 05 October 15 21:23 BST (UK)  »
I wonder can anyone help with any information regarding the Murphy family from this area. I have a mass card for a Kate Murphy nee Keeffe who passed away on 11 June 1926 which gives her home as Clongiffin, Enfield. She had a sister called Mary Ann. Kate married a James Murphy about 1871/72 or so in this area of Meath we reckon.

Their first child was James and he was baptised in Killine parish on 21 February 1874. The witnesses were a Thomas Proctor and a Mary Monaghan. Another son was Thomas born 4 December 1880 and we think this may be the same Thomas who was the first treasurer of the Longwood GAA.

We think the father James who married Kate had a brother Patrick and he is our family line but the Mass card is the only connection we have with this area as all Patrick's children were born in Wicklow. So anything that may shed light on why our family had this Mass card would be much appreciated.

Thanks for any help with this matter.

Wicklow / Murphy family Ballintombay/Ballinatone, Greenan, Co. Wicklow
« on: Monday 22 June 15 23:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for descendants of the Murphy family from the above area who lived there in the 1870'/80s/90s.  Before moving to this area they lived in Talbotstown near Kiltegan where Michael Murphy was baptised in Rathvilly on 14 December 1862.   My great grandfather Daniel (Michael's brother) married Bridget Keeley (Murray) in Aughrim, Co. Wicklow on July 6 1899.

Daniel had brothers Patrick, Michael and Laurence, sisters Catherine who married a Patrick Riddick, Elizabeth who married Bernard Kavanagh, Rosanna who married Robert Ward and Mary who married William Townsend.

Michael and Laurence worked for Guinness when the family moved to Dublin in the late 1800s.

The parents of all the above were Patrick Murphy and Ellen, nee Broe/Brow.

Thanks for any help.
