Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Mayman vs Maynard
« on: Tuesday 25 April 23 17:21 BST (UK)  »
I’m not sure if this is the correct riding to post in but it may not matter. My 5th great grandfather, Jabez Maybard, married in Doncaster in 1793. The image shows his name as Jabesh Mayman. All other records succeeding the marriage record shows Jabez Maynard. The family all went by the surname Maynard and a son and grandsons were named Jabez Maynard. I have no records prior to his marriage in 1793. He was born about 1770 but I’m not sure where. He died in Drypool in 1818.

What could be the reason for the name change? His signature on the banns also shows Jabesh Mayman.

Thanks so much for any knowledge you can pass on to me :)

Bedfordshire / Help Reading Pension
« on: Wednesday 08 February 23 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning,
I have a part of a pension that I am having difficulty reading. There’s writing in the background that I know says Leighton Buzzard but I can’t make out whose name is written down and where in Leighton Buzzard. I think it says some sort of school but I want to be certain.

Thanks so much!

London and Middlesex / Charles Stuart 1867 Shepherds Bush
« on: Wednesday 14 September 22 02:46 BST (UK)  »
I’m looking for a Charles Stuart who was supposedly born 10 Feb 1867 in Shepherds Bush, Middlesex according to the 1939 Register and some of the censuses.

I’m unable to find a birth record for him. I can’t find him in the 1871 or 1881 Censuses. In 1891 he’s a schoolmaster in New Forest, Hampshire.

I’ve tried searching FreeBMD with just the name Charles in 1866 and 1867 in Fulham as well as just Stuart in 1866 and 1867 in Fulham. I’ve had no luck. An extra pair of eyes would be so greatly appreciated.

I have ordered his marriage certificate from the GRO Index to see if a father  is mentioned but I imagine it’ll take a while to get to me.

Thanks so much in advance.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Question about Y-37 DNA Test from FTDNA
« on: Wednesday 15 July 20 18:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

My dad has agreed to take a Y-DNA test for me in order to help prove/disprove his paternal lineage. His grandad was adopted so I'd like to find out if he truly was a Stuart or if his biological mother lied on his birth certificate. I realize that the Y-67 or higher would have been the better test to buy but it was too expensive so I figure one day I'll do an upgrade.

My question is what exactly will this test give me? I'm not expecting many (if any) matches but will it give my dad's haplogroup? And if so, what is the benefit of knowing the haplogroup? Sorry if these are stupid questions. I just want to be prepared when the results come in.

Thank you for your time.

Wigtownshire / William Steuart/Stuart/Stewart, Siege of Derry
« on: Thursday 11 June 20 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to make a connection between Irwin Stewart, a reverend in Co. Antrim, Ireland and his supposed grandfather, Sir William Steuart, hero of the Siege of Derry. I have seen many forums that say Irwin was the son of Henry Stewart (Lieutenant of Brigadiers in his father's Regiment of 9th Foot) and Jane Irwin, daughter of Christopher Irwin and Sarah Ormsby.

I'm having a lot of difficulty finding how William could possibly be Irwin's grandfather when he supposedly didn't have any children. William is supposed to be the grandson of William Stewart of Mains and Barbara Stewart of Burray.

One of the stories I've read is that a Robert Stewart, a relative of King James, was an ambassador to Turin and was granted lands in Ireland. On his way to claim them, he was lost at sea. Then his supposed grandson, William, went to claim them and raised an army for William of Orange. Would that Robert Stewart be the Robert Stewart connected to the Stewart's of Castle Stewart?

Worcestershire / Hannah Maria PARDOE b. 1848 in Lye
« on: Monday 30 December 19 19:23 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a connection between Hannah Maria Pardoe, a milliner and/or dressmaker from Lye, and a Sarah Elizabeth Whiting, a milliner from Leighton Buzzard.

My great-grandad was born 28 Aug 1883 and his birth was registered as Henry Whiting Stuart in Luton, Bedfordshire to Elizabeth Stuart, formerly Whiting (though not actually married). Sometime later he became George Harry Dunn from Wollescote, son of Edwin Dunn and Betsy Brooks. I don't know how he got from Luton to Wollescote but I do know Betsy Brooks and Hannah Maria Pardoe were first cousins. I wonder if H.M. knew S.E. Whiting and when SE had to give up George HM suggested her childless cousin?

I'm having trouble finding Hannah Maria Pardoe on the 1881 Census and the 1901 Census. I did find a Hannah M. Pardoe but the age is wrong as this one was born in 1860. However, I checked the GRO Index from years 1858-1862 and there were no Hannah Pardoe births registered. I wonder if this one is her: https://www.ancestry.ca/interactive/7572/WORRG11_2876_2879-0775?pid=23343081&backurl=https://search.ancestry.ca/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D7572%26h%3D23343081%26tid%3D72626097%26pid%3D330054965998%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DpBQ17078%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=72626097&personid=330054965998&hintid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=pBQ17078&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.70339856.1823065215.1577301712-964746141.1558553763#?imageId=WORRG11_2876_2879-0776

Europe / Polish Towns: Bluty & Kaluchy
« on: Thursday 10 October 19 12:35 BST (UK)  »
I found these two places on a Passenger List but am struggling to find these Polish towns, Bluty & Kaluchy, on a map. I can only assume that they were written down phonetically but are spelled very differently. Any help would be greatly appreciated. There's a good chance these places are near the Ukrainian border if not right in the Ukraine.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / France Census?
« on: Saturday 28 September 19 01:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Was there a census taken in France for 1881 and 1891? I've lost my 2nd great-grandfather on the 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses. I think he was in Ireland for the 1871 census.

His name was Henry Benson Stuart. Born 20 Apr 1835 in Calcutta, India. At one time he was a Captain in the Bengal Army, a gentleman, an author, and his burial record from 1897 says he was a Major in the Bengal Army.

He is in the 1851 census at school in Rugby and in the 1861 census with his wife and son. He seemed to have several children with a few different women over a 20 year period or so. His second wife lived around the corner from my 2nd great-grandmother, who had two children with HB Stuart while he was married.

My 2nd great-grandmother ended up going to France with her daughter in 1887 and my great-grandad went to live with another family. I wondered if HB Stuart was in France with them and that's why I can't find him. Most likely he's hiding under a different name. I really have no idea where to look at this point.

US Lookup Requests / Cornell University Library Lookup Request
« on: Monday 12 August 19 13:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I was wondering if someone might have access to the Cornell University library. They have a document in their rare collections on Wyndham Lewis that I think will help me solve a mystery.

I believe that Wyndham Lewis's mother, Annie Stuart Prickett, was the biological daughter of France Mary Dangerfield (later Prickett) and my 2nd great-grandfather, Henry Benson Stuart.

One of the folders in the collection has a document that mentions Annie Stuart Lewis (otherwise Pickett) was seeking more information on Henry Benson Stuart who died 31 Jan 1897.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have sent some emails off to the library but haven't had any replies yet.
