Family History Beginners Board / Pre-1837 JONES!

Hello Everyone
My father's side were from USK, Monmouthshire, and I found his father, Allen JONES, his grandfather, Alexander John Jones (1866), his great grandfather John Jones (b 1828), and at least the name of John Jones' father (James JONES b 1798)
James, John, Alexander were all carpenters. (James also was undertaker and coffin-maker and may well have been a murderer who got away with it!)
My question is, when you search pre-1837 and come up with a number of possible marriages, births, parents, etc, how can you eliminate the wrong ones and zoom in on the correct ones?
Thanks all!
