I have been working on the Boltons of Woodridge, 16th & 17th century generations, and have come across the mention of a Grant of Arms to my 10th g-gfa, Thomas Bolton, by William Camden, the then Clarenceux King of Arms, in several published works, e.g. this one: https://archive.org/details/familyofboltonin00bolt/page/n29. (Most report 1615, although in one source, Suffolk Manorial Families, it gives the year as 1610 rather than 1615). The grant is based on Thomas being descended from the Boltons of Bolton in Lancashire (although I have been so far unable to find a direct link from his father, who was from Suffolk too - separate story).

There is a description and I found an illustration of it by googling. No problems there.

But this is the thing. According to other sources I have been using to derive genealogical information (although not all consistent) others have drawn the conclusion that Thomas is the 3rd eldest son, with William and then Robert ahead of him. By 1610, William is dead, but Robert lives until 1635, according to this chart in the Visitations of England and Wales (top right): https://archive.org/details/visitationofengl32howa/page/54.

Does anyone know how likely it is that this coat of arms would have been bestowed upon the second surviving son? What are the rules about this? (I am just wondering if one can draw a conclusion that Thomas was in fact older than Robert, or whether there might be some other reason why it was not granted to Robert.)

Edit: Or could it just be that Thomas applied for it himself and that's why he got it?

This is part of my research into the same family as Wiseman in my previous thread, but I've marked that as complete so thought I'd better post a new one.

This baptism is in FS: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N5KW-4JZ, showing John Bolton as the father as well as the son's name. As the mother's name (Mare) is the same as that given for all records found for siblings in the family with parents Thomas Bolton and Mary Wiseman, most of whom were born in Woodbridge too, it seems possible that this may be an error in transcription, and an FS family tree has attached that John Bolton to the Thomas-Mary family. They show a John Bolton was buried in Woodbridge on 21 September 1640, although no source is given, and I can't find such a burial in FS or FreeReg. I am trying to verify whether he actually belongs there in this family.

However, Suffolk Manorial Families does not show a John in the family tree as sibling of Wiseman, etc. SMF does show a John as son of John, on p. 221 family tree as a "devisee of his sister Sheene, who names Allan, John, and Thomas, his sons..." (and also named in the will on pp.217-8, also showing Wiseman and some of the other siblings in the other family). It's a bit confusing because it refers to an MS1177, which (at the top of p.220) shows a Thomas as the father of a John, Edward and the Thomas who marries Mary Wiseman (also says there the wife of Thomas Sr is Elizabeth Curt(e)is - but Alice is borne out in other sources, including Thomas Sr's will in 1616).

My leaning is towards unhitching that John in the FS Thomas-Mary family at this point.

My other query is about Wiseman's sisters Mary and Elizabeth. The SMF family tree seems to possibly indicate that they are twins, baptised a year apart, 1628 and 1629? (Or is that just the representation on the chart?) I have baptisms from FS for Mary 28 Oct 1628 and Elsebeth on 7 Jan 1629, i.e. Jan 1630.

I have Mary Bolton marrying John Harvy on 27 Sep 1653 (record in FS), but the SMF tree seems to indicate another unnamed sibling marrying a ...Harvy. So either there were two Marys and one died early, or SMF simply didn't have all the records at the time it was published.

My leaning here is towards assuming just one Mary, who survived to marry John Harvy.

Any thoughts or other observations, please? (I can tell that I'm going to be spending a while longer on these Boltons!)

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / Wiseman Bolton, died 1658, Woodbridge
« on: Friday 30 November 18 06:49 GMT (UK)  »
I haven't been able to find a baptism record for this person, but there is a family tree in FS which supplies some details about him and puts his (unverified) birth in 1620. The parents are Thomas Bolton and Mary Wiseman, married in Great Canfield, Essex, in 1618, and there are siblings Thomas, William Mary, Elsebeth, all baptised in the 1620s in Woodbridge - assuming that he does belong in this family. (The only baptism I can find in 1620 is an Annible, but different location - Stoke By Nayland - and no parents' first names given so I think she may belong in another family...?)

In FS, there's an Ancestry link, to:
"England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858 for Wisman Bolton." England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858 for Wisman Bolton. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2017. .
Notes PROB 11: Will Registers1655-1659Piece 281: Wootton, Quire Numbers 470-523 (1658) Noncupative Will of William Bolton of Ipswich, Suffolk gentleman deceased, was given by word of mouth 4 May 1658 one or two days before his death. He left his estate to his brother William Bolton, and administration was granted to this brother, when the Will was proved in London 15 Jun 1658.
- but there seems to be an error there, as it seems to show a William leaving his estate to his brother William(??).

There's also a burial from the National Index, N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Jan. 2017. .
First name(s) WISEMAN
Last name BOLTON
Birth year -Death year 1658
Burial year 1658
Burial day 9
Burial month 5
Place WOODBRIDGE
Church description ST MARY

Can anyone find any other info on this person to verify details and/or establish that he belongs in this family?

England / Edward George Honey, military record 1915
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 05:13 GMT (UK)  »
I have found that he was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1885, was boarding in Glocs. in 1911, married Amelia Toomey Apr-Jun1915, and apparently joined the Middlesex regiment (Regt. no. 10124? or is that his service no.?) - the latter on FamilySearch.

Just wondering if anyone has access to his details of service? I think that he was probably discharged fairly soon afterwards (medical).

(I have a fair amount of other info - he's not an ancestor and this is just a minor research project for which I want to clear up this detail.)

Scotland / SA migrant John Carter who may have died back in Scotland 1908
« on: Thursday 01 November 18 06:38 GMT (UK)  »
John Carter was born in Glasgow on March 19, 1851 and emigrated to South Africa (Cape Town) with his parents and brothers when he was about 7. I have quite a bit on his life in Cape Town - wife Ann Maria Green Bashforth, lots of children, etc. but have been unable to track down any record of his death apart from a date given on his wife's death notice. She only died in 1930 in Johannesburg (where she went to join one of her daughters), but his death is shown as May 17, 1908.

Family stories passed down suggest that he and wife returned to Scotland at least once, and I am wondering if he died there, or en route perhaps. I have exhausted all avenues I can think of for a death with his name and year in 1908 in South Africa and Scotland and although I can see a few possible matches on the passenger list header records in FindMyPast, it's pretty hard to guess which may be him. Of course a name like John Carter doesn't make it easy!

There is one John Carter who travels in 1908 and there's an A.M. Carter in the same year (Carter   A M   —   —   1908   Passenger Lists Leaving Uk 1890-1960   Cape, South Africa), and clutching at straws, wonder if this could be the pair of them and he dies along the way...

I'm not very hopeful but if anyone has any ideas or is able to provide any further info about the 1908 passengers, I'd appreciate it!

England / Probate entry for Mary Katherine Augusta Beisiegel, 1922
« on: Friday 05 October 18 12:58 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering if anyone has any access to useful details on this document:
Name: Mary Katherine Augusta Beisiegel
Death Date: 26/03/1922
Death Place: Rochester, Kent, England
Probate Date: 23/05/1922
Registry: London, England

Edit:
I have also just found one for her father, Georg Heinrich Carl Beisiegel, in Rutland, 28 Sep 1904, beneficiaries Sarah Susannah Beisiegel and Phillip Karl Beisiegel. I don't suppose there's much other information there, but if anyone can see anything useful, that would be good too.

London and Middlesex / Mary Ann Elizabeth Balne - marriage
« on: Thursday 23 August 18 18:25 BST (UK)  »
From FamilySearch:
Name   Mary Ann Elizabeth Balne
Event Type   Marriage
Registration Quarter   Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration Year   1860
Registration District   Lambeth
Volume   1D
Page   427

This Mary Ann Elizabeth Balne probably married one of the following people
Name   Thomas William Armstrong
Name   Charlotte Constance Hearn
Name   Anne Maria Lane
Name   Edward Taylor

However, in BMD, under Balne,
Marriages Dec 1860
Balne    Mary Ann Elizabeth        Lambeth    1d   437

I think that FS must be wrong, because under 1d 437 in Lambeth, I find these names:
Balne    Mary Ann Elizabeth        Lambeth    1d   437
Card            William                        Lambeth    1d   437
Carter    William                        Lambeth    1d   437
Taylor    Susannah Elizabeth Gibbon Lambeth    1d   437

So it looks as if she married William Card or William Carter. It seems unlikely that they had children, as she was baptised in Nov 1806. There's a death of a Mary Ann E Carter aged 84 in Wandsworth in 1889, which could possibly be her, if she was baptised late. There are various other Mary Ann Carter and Card deaths on FS, but none have the third name beginning "E", or the dates or places seem less likely.

Just wondering whether anyone has any other suggestions?
(p.s. I got drawn into this whilst on holiday, so may not be back to respond immediately!)

My current subscription to Ancestry does not seem to show some records I can see at header level on FindMyPast, so wondering if anyone can find and supply further info on this person?

Her name was Audrey Marguerite Harris (b. 1895 Lymington) and at some point after WW1 she left the UK, and at some point after 1938 married Frank Warner (someone has supplied a date in Cape Town in 1939, but I cannot find corroboration for that) and joined him on his tobacco farm in the then Southern Rhodesia. I have various journeys they made together, and I have Frank's history (born Grimbsy) as well as quite a bit on her earlier and later life (she moved back to England as a widow), but I am curious to find when she made that first trip. She was apparently a teacher.

These are a few FindMyPast records which could possibly belong to her:
Harris   A   1895   —   1920   Passenger Lists Leaving Uk 1890-1960   Cape, South Africa
Harris   A   1896   —   1920   Passenger Lists Leaving Uk 1890-1960   Cape, South Africa
Harris   A M   1896   —   1937   Passenger Lists Leaving Uk 1890-1960   Cape, South Africa

Looking for verification of her identity, if it is her on one or more of these records.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Early 18th C Scots baptism
« on: Wednesday 20 June 18 09:02 BST (UK)  »
Can someone decipher the attached well enough to make out how it matches the transciption on FS here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT22-KMH? It's odd that all of FS's records of the siblings in this family have the surname as "Abercrummie", whereas I can see a b quite clearly in Abercrumbie/Abercromby.

Any other clues as to the strange wording of the baptism would also be interesting to hear! (I also have a PDF of the whole page - similar wording for other baptisms - but I think too big to attach here.)
