The Stay Safe Board / Using Skype to keep in touch
« on: Monday 23 March 20 13:34 GMT (UK)  »
Skype is a program that enables two or more people to have a private video conference from tablets or computers with a microphone, speakers and a Web camera. Other similar programs are available.

Despite having worked in IT for most of my career I had never use Skype until today. I have a friend, who was a captain of industry, but had very little experience of computers. He has a tablet. We spent an hour on the phone, during which I talked him through downloading the program, configuring it (based on my total lack of experience of the program), and within 45 minutes we were able to see each other and speak to each other. If you're worried about keeping in touch with friends or family do give this a try, and I'm sure somebody in your family will be able to provide the same limited experience that I had!

As well there are many tutorials on YouTube, although it might take you a while to find one that isn't presented by a noisy would be game show presenter.

If you have any problems I am sure you will get adequate support from other Rootschat Skype users.

The Common Room / The Storm family of Hartlepool

I would welcome contact from anyone interested in this family.

Please send me a personal message.  A member of the family, probably born in 1897, was a witness at my parents' wedding in 1950.

I found this very interesting.

Here is an interesting story which I'm sure will create a lot of discussion.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ashkenazi Judaism and hip-hop music

This was very interesting. DNA, nature and nurture.

Dr Adam Rutherford offers a scientific toolkit to separate fact from myth in understanding how we are different and how we are the same.

In the final episode he tackles the fraught subject of whether there is a genetic factor in how our cognitive abilities vary.

I am trying to document my memories from before the age of seven and a half, which was a convenient cut-off date in my childhood as my parents moved house at the time.

It has made me realise that it is difficult to separate what you've seen in photographs, and what your parents and other relatives might have discussed in front of you, from your own individual memories.   For example, do I really remember my tricycle, or is it just that I've seen it in a photograph?

I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of others.
