London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / 65 Parliament Hill Hampstead
« on: Tuesday 27 April 21 21:17 BST (UK)  »
In 1939 a gentleman I am researching (who was unofficially classified as an undesirable alien and deported to Australia) resided at 65 Parliament Hill, Hampstead.  The majority of residents at that time may also have been classified as being a risk to the UK's security, so is there anyone who can tell me more about that building and the lives of those who were placed there?

"England and Wales Census, 1911," database, FamilySearch ( : 8 May 2019), Lazrus Genik, London, England, United Kingdom; from "1911 England and Wales census," database and images,

The parents were Jewish, arrived from Russia / Poland and as they had little grasp of English, a certain amount of flexibility is required to identify them in earlier records.  Their children appear to have been born in the St George of the East district of London with Joseph being born around the time of the 1901 census.

I would greatly appreciate any help that can be given to identify any of the children’s births, or to locate the parents and one son on the 1901 census.

Lancashire / Barbara J Hilton
« on: Monday 24 December 18 08:59 GMT (UK)  »
The marriage of the late Barbara J Hilton gives her a birth in West Derby (Liverpool) in 1927 and lists her father as Dr Charles Hilton, medical practitioner.  What is known however, is that Charles' family took over caring for her because she was born illegitimate. I have no idea whether there was an official adoption procedure, or if this was something the family did unofficially.

I only have a short copy of Barbara J Hilton's 1927 birth cert, but the GRO reference confirms that her mother's surname was also Hilton, so am presuming that her mother was another member of Charles' Hilton family.  Although I am applying for a copy the full certificate, I would like to gather in advance, any further info that anyone has on Dr. Charles and his family of Liverpool Hiltons.  Anything, even simple addresses from Kellys' directories or names from electoral roles would certainly be helpful.

Thanks in advance

Arundale – Arandale - Arundel – Arundall – Arundell  family

I have made an incorrect connection to a family tree I have been working on and am seeking to relocate the individual concerned to his correct parents, hopefully without the loss of all the related research.

At the moment, I have the parents of Robert Head Arundale shown as Francis and Mary Ann Arundale, but I have since found that Robert’s parents were George and Harriet.  There is a possibility that Francis and George were brothers, and if so it would make the task of sorting the problem far easier.  Alternatively, if the Hanover Square parish workhouse was in Thomas Street (see Arundell entry in 1841 census) George may have come from humbler stock

My research so far has shown that the Arundales (whose surname has numerous variations) were well educated and had servants so I presume them to have been reasonably wealthy.  They moved between the better areas of Soho,  Hanover and Marylebone districts.  I also believe (but have yet to prove conclusively) that the parents of the siblings below (all born in the above areas between 1805 – 1820) were Stephen and Sarah (maiden name unknown) who I estimate had birth years in the mid 1780s.  Their proven children were
Stephen ‘Scott’ Arundale c 1805 married to Sarah Channing nee Atkinson ;
Francis Arundale c1807 married to Mary Ann nee Pickersgill Oct 11 1838;
And three daughters who became unmarried school mistresses
Sarah Arundale c1808; Elizabeth Arundale  c1814 and Mary Ann Arundale c1815

I am therefore trying to find out if these were also siblings of George Arandale / Arundel born c 1807, who married a Harriet Clarke on 3 Nov 1830, and died 1848.
That couple became the parents of Frederick Arundell; Harriet Arundell; James William Arundell; Robert Head Arundell; Harriet Mary Arundell; Elizabeth Arundell and Frances Georgina Arundell
Harriet then married Joseph Short and is on the 1851 census with the younger Arundell children.

Any takers?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Parritz: Another pair of eyes.
« on: Friday 30 March 18 04:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi:    I have been helping someone else with a challenging search for Soloman Parritz, his dressmaker wife Eva (b c1867), and their children Harry (b c1897) and Ruben (b c1899).  Wife and children were all born Vilna, Lithuania (Russia).

The family had arrived in London by November 1900 when there is a record to show Soloman, then living at 21 High Street Dwellings (no district), registered his eldest son for schooling, but I cannot find them on the 1901 census.  Eva and the children do appear in the 1911 census of St George In The East, before departing (without husband) for Boston in the USA later the same year.  Family lore suggests the husband went to the USA first, but never corresponded with the family after that.

It would help to have another pair of eyes more familiar with London records to initially find the family in 1901 (possibly under a variation of their unusual surname) and to also fill in any gaps between 1900 and 1911.

Any takers?

Europe / Baptisms in Paris
« on: Sunday 03 September 17 13:18 BST (UK)  »
Not sure if I am in the right place here, for Rootschat seems to have changed its listings so that I can no longer place my request directly before those who specialize in the records from a specific European country.

So if any of you know how to access French records, I am looking for the following

A Paris baptism between 1852 - 1855 of Jeanne Martyn (Martin) whose parents were English.
I would like to know the date and who those parents were.

Can anyone help?

Wiltshire / Juvenile Home owner
« on: Friday 01 September 17 17:42 BST (UK)  »
The 1861 Wiltshire census has a seven year child as the HEAD of the house.
I can confirm from quite detailed research that I have been doing that she was only 7
With her are her governess and 2 servants.

I am trying to find exactly where the house was and who was the actual owner for I cannot imagine a 7 year old being in charge of the house and paying the staff's wages.
Below are the details.   Can anyone help?

Wiltshire / In laws of Cornelius England
« on: Friday 30 June 17 11:30 BST (UK)  »
I have a Cornelius England marrying an Eliza Mitchell in Alderbury, Wiltshire, c 1853 and am trying to find out who their respective sets of parents were?

Cornelius born c 1826 was the son of Phoebe (daughter of Betty England) who also seems to have had a later relationship with a Robert Palmer, but I have nothing to say that Robert was also his father.

Similarly I have no parents for Eliza born c1825, but I just wonder if she is from the same Mitchell family that crosses my ancestral path about a decade later.  (It was a decade later that my GG widowed gran Ann Grant nee Petty, married a John Mitchell born 1821)

So does anyone have access to copy marriage records for Alderbury, Wiltshire?

Warwickshire / Birrmingham feathers
« on: Thursday 13 April 17 09:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for any info (circa 1911) on a Birmingham feather dealer called Jonah Colbosow.
As expected the spelling the surname has variations such as Colbesow, Colbosew, Colbasow etc.

I have his children born Kings Norton district in 1911 and 1912, their Birmingham marriages and his partner Mary's death in 1957, but he seems to have appeared out of nowhere and disappeared almost as quickly. So any info specifically on him would be most welcome.

Thanks in anticipation.
