Cheshire / Northing(e) parish
« on: Sunday 13 December 20 14:13 GMT (UK)  »
Please does anyone recognise this parish. I am trying to trace the birth of a William davies for my friend. We have his relation in the 1851 census in Royton, Lancs. His age gives a birth year of 1793 and this is confirmed by his death record. That census says that he was born in Cheshire, Northing(e).

We have his marriage to Betty Law in 1814 in Royton and the births of all his children but nothing appears to help. I cannot find Northing(e) in any Cheshire gazeteer. Does anyone have any ideas please?

His children's names were Thomas, Nancy, Ellin, Maerty Ann, James and John.

Berkshire / DEW/DEWE/DUE/ family
« on: Sunday 19 April 20 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the ancestry of Thomas Dewe died 1819 in Drayton, Berks. The family records suggest that he was born in 1738. There is a baptism of that date of Thomas Due to William Due and his wife Ann in Charney Bassett.
Thomas' will indentifies a Robert Wicks, of Drayton, as his uncle.
Robert Wicks will amongst others refers to his 'sister Ann Dewe of Charney'.

These seem reasonable pointers to the fact that Thomas' parents were William Dewe and Ann Wicks but after that I am stuck completely. I can get information on the Wicks family going back but nothing whatsover about William Dewe's parents or even of his marriage to Ann Wicks.

Has anyone got access to records which might help or can point me in the right direction. Many thanks.

England / Birth registrations HELP REQUEST
« on: Saturday 11 April 20 09:41 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone any idea how to solve this puzzle? I am trying to help a friend identify her grandmother. The lady was very coy about her identity and even the information on her marriage certificate is inaccurate!
The best that we have to go on is that she was called Mabel or Mabel Claire or Mabel something. We dont have her surname and her father's name was possibly John although that is unreliable!

She consistently gave her birthday as 9 August 1878.

Does anyone know of any way of interrogating the online births databases for an exact date of birth. My first pass showed over 900 Mabels born in that quarter!

Any idea would be welcome short of trying to eliminate each of the 900 one by one.

Thanks

Hi. Dont know whether this is the right place to post. Has anyone any recent experience of the old will service (probate search by gov.uk). Ordered a will on 19 Sept and told ten working days for reply yet still nothing. Two emails queries also ignored. All my previous use of this service has been good.
Help/advice would be appreciated.

Dumfriesshire / John Scott living in Annan 1788-1799
« on: Friday 10 May 19 10:38 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help with any information about John Scott?
I know that he married Agnes Lorrain and that they had seven children born in Annan between 1789 and 1799.
I know that many of the Annan marriage records of that time are missing.
I can find Agnes Lorrain in the Annan birth records baptised in 1770 but not John Scott.
The closest that I can find is a John Scott baptised in Gretna in 1769.

I cannot find any death/burial records for either John or Agnes.

Has anyone got any thoughts please?

Merionethshire / Evan Ellis - Miller at Llanbedr
« on: Tuesday 19 February 19 20:46 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening

Can anyone help identify Evan Ellis parents/baptism please.
Basic facts are:
1. Miller at Llanbedr up to death in 1871
2. Married Bridget Jones in 1823 in Llanbedr.
3. Census returns all give birth details as 1797/8 in Llanenddwyn.

I cant seem to find any birth/baptism details in Llanenddwyn for that period. Does anyone have access to more detailed /extensive records than appear online. I have tried Ancestry; Find My Past; Family Search and FreeReg.

Thanks

Leicestershire / Rev George Goater Ashby de la Zouch 1816-1819
« on: Thursday 07 February 19 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening all

Can anyone help to throw further light on the following extract?

From Chapter 8 "Ministers of the Ashby Independent Chapel"
1816-1819 -    Rev George Goater - a man of much learning and considerable ability, but failed, in his character, to commend the gospel he preached. His pulpit gifts were attractive and the congregation initially greatly increased.
It is reported that what he build up by preaching he destroyed by practice. His conduct was such that, finally, the church and congregation left him and in the end, in 1819, he found it                             necessary to withdraw entirely from ministry.

I know that he married Sarah Fox in 1810 and was living in Driffield, Derbyshire at that time. His full name appears to have been George Gealer Goater. They had two sons in Ashby:- William Hextell Goater (b 1816) and Aldfred Goater (b 1819).

I would love to know anything about his background and also just what was his extreme 'conduct'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Essex / Isbell and Harvey
« on: Friday 01 February 19 10:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
I am a bit frustrated by the lack of any obvious index to Essex parish records. I am stuck with the following.

Isaac Isbell [and variant spelling] married Mary Medcalf in Black Notley on 20 Jan 1798. Possibly born 1767. Is this correct and if so where?
Obviously interested in any other Isbells going further back.

Also
Samuel Harvey married Mary Mills in Braintree 8 Mar 1818. Census says born Braintree in 1796 ish.

If anyone has any info it would be great. Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Parents of Alfred Bartholomew
« on: Thursday 22 October 15 19:08 BST (UK)  »
Parents of Alfred Bartholomew

DoB 9/4/1877 at 4 Fleet Street, Bethnal Green according to birth cert.
Parents listed as William Bartholomew and Caroline Bartholomew nee Smith.

Caroline is straightforward. From her 1901 census entry and her baptism record she was born 10/10/1833, the daughter of Robert Smith and Sarah Bamken (? spelling). Living with her parents in 1841 census but both died before 1851 so living with brother Robert in 1851. Must have married between 1851 and birth of first child, Jane, by William Bartholomew in 1957. No trace of marriage record.
Have tried to think if she might have married someone else earlier and remarried William as a widow but have got nowhere.

Who is William. Various census gives dob 1823-28 and Whitechapel/Bethnal Green as place of birth. I have found no birth record to add to the no marriage record!

William living on his own in 1841 census [name mis-transcribed on Ancestry] in Bethnal Green.
Other Bartholomew families living in Bethnal Green in 1841 were:-
John and Susan (66 & 56) in Camden Gardens
William and Ann [65 & 60] in Durham Place East with 1 grand child
Alfred (William and Ann's son) and Mary Ann [ 31 & 30] with 2 children in Durham Street
Hannah (widow of Thomas) [50] in Broadway
Thomas, Eliza and Ann, Hannah's children in Temple Terrace
Josh and Elizabeth (60 & 55) and three adult sons in Hackney Road Crescent
Caroline (18) another mis-transcription in Sale St.
and the William I am searching (18) a weaver from Hart's Lane.

Does William fit into any of these families?
1. John and Susan because I can find no trace of any childrens baptisms for them and neither can I for William.
2. William and Ann. Simply on the grounds of a reappearance of the name Alfred
3. Hannah. On the grounds that children were away from home and that her late husband's father, Peter Bartholomew, owned property in the street where Caroline Smith was born [very tenuous].

Has anyone got any ideas?
