Hi all,

Does anyone out there know if the WW1 medal rolls are complete or are there missing records the same as other British Army records?
The next question is can you tell from service numbers which Border battalion a soldier served in?
I am trying to see if there is any way to linking the medal rolls to my grandfather. All I know is he was a private in the 1st Border Regiment in WW1. And that it is believed he was probably in France.
On Ancestry I found the medal rolls for a Border Regiment Private, service number 203373.This particular soldier was also in the Army Ordinance Corps, service number 039392. Is there a way to link either of these numbers to the 1st Border Regiment? This would then hopefully make it more likely to be my grandfather.
Any other suggestions as to what to try would be most appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Dodd/Dod family Moreton 1600s/1700s
« on: Tuesday 07 February 23 03:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Has anyone out there got anything on the Dod/Dodd family of Moreton,Cheshire in the 1600/1700s?

I am trying to go as far back as I can with this family and the name comes up as early as 1601 from what I’ve found so far.It would be great if anyone could help me fill the gaps.

My ancestor, Margaret Dodd was born in 1777 and baptized at St.Oswald’s, Bidston.I believe her father was Thomas Dodd.

Does anyone know if there is a connection between the Moreton Dodds and the Dodd family of Edge?

Thank you

Hi,

I have two signatures for a Richard Moores/Moors.One is from 1742 and the other is from 1751.Is there anyone out there that could give me there opinion about whether these are the same person?
They do look a little different and the spelling of Moores is different, but spelling wasn’t standardized in those days.
Any help or opinions would be much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Carlyle families of Torthorwald opinions
« on: Wednesday 09 February 22 06:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have an ancestor named Mary Carlyle (1688-1780) of Roucan,Torthorwald parish,Dumfriesshire who I’ve hit a bit of a brick wall on and would like to have some opinions on.
Other than her birth and death dates and knowing he husband wa John Coulter of Howgate,Roucan, I haven’t been able to find anything. The Torthorwald records are patchy for this period.
What I would like opinions on is this:

Given the age concerned,location etc
How probable do you think it is that she belonged to the well documented Dumfriesshire Carlyle family?
This family had various branches in the area including members in Torthorwald village itself and also in the surrounding area.
I know this could be a dangerous assumption to make but given the location and period concerned, I believe there may be large probability of her being so.However.If it was the same situation in any other part of the country or a different time period, I would be inclined not make the same judgement.

Any opinions much appreciated

Hi,

I need help with this will from 1687. It concerns Janet Little of Torthorwald. I have managed to attach most of the first page (of 2) here. To be honest this is my first time looking at this age of document and it seems impossible for me to read.
 Can anyone help?

Family History Beginners Board / Torthorwald parish Carlyle families 1600/1700s
« on: Tuesday 24 August 21 02:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Has anybody out there got any sources on the Carlyle family of Torthorwald village and parish from the 1600/1700s.

I have access to SP and have found members on there but I’m looking for more info to see if particular people are linked.
I have seen the online Carlyle histories including Boytath, Torthorwald by Nicolas Carlyle but there isn’t much to go on.
Some members I’m particularly interested in are

Robert Carlyle died 1751
Mary Carlyle 1688-1780
Janet Carlyle
Margaret Carlyle

Last two probably born late 1600s
Robert is somehow connected to Lord Carlyle.I believe his wife was born about 1676, so he may be of similar age.
It seems possible/probable that the ladies are also related but I need more help.

Any help much appreciated!
