The Common Room / family History Christmas Gifts Ideas - Restorers waiting!!
« on: Sunday 19 November 17 13:17 GMT (UK)  »
Christmas is fast approaching and what better way to give a thoughtful gift than a digitally restored and/or coloured photograph. So forum users tell your friends to dust of the old photos, get them scanned at high quality DPI 300-600 and post them over to rootsChat photograph Restoration section for restore and colour.

And the best thing it does not cost a penny - just some time to organise.

Get those scanners working overtime  :D

All the restorers are waiting for some TOP NOTCH scans and photo's.

Once they are done you can print them and frame them or keep them as digital format....

Cheers,

Wonder if someone could give me some advice on date and regiment etc. WW1 or WW2 ?

All I know is that this distant family member is surname Latham, from East London/Statford and possibly later Essex.

The picture is in a bad way, so not easy to see the uniform.

If anyone wants to restore it, you are more than welcome, I have tried so many times but never managed or always get busy doing others on here to return to it  ;)  In truth, it is a very tough restore, but some of you out there are very very good at restores, where as i prefer the colouring aspect. Anyway, I think it is to damaged/creased and yes I know the scan quality is not up to what is required - so do not expect many attempts - this is how it was sent to me.

Important part is trying to identify which war and if anyone can pin point regiments or something along those lines, my father would be interested.

Thanks

Just a heads up to fellow restorers. Twice now i have been accused of using another restorers work for colouring .....suggest by personal messages...

1. I am quite capable of restoring a photo.
2. I would always ask permission first (which i have done once or twice  in the past but no more than that)
3. If a photo size is the same usually it because it has not been cropped and matches the same size and dimensions as the original posters photo....Just coincidence

So please do not talk or suggest amongst yourselves that I have used your restore.

Get over it  ;)

Thanks, looking forward to some more restores and colour jobs from the community.

Hi,

Does anyone regularly contribute on British historical pages or know where colourists can actively get involved (outside of roots). Web searches bring up an array of images but mostly not inspiring. British library online is terrible to use and other than that not much else  >:(

I understand you cannot use such copyrighted images for commercial benefit - that is not my intention at all. I would however like to share end results (via my studio page or I guess ideally direct with a specific group for colourized history).

The Americans have many places to contribute to historical colourization work...but i am struggling to find anything so obvious for British archives. All i found is under wiki commons....Maybe i am not looking in right places !

For example this (just random images)
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Admiral_of_the_Fleet_Earl_Mountbatten_of_Burma_A15107.jpg

So i found via a regular search on wiki and this link below has a number of Imperial War Museum images that are possibly still under copyright that i cannot reproduce and share ?

I have niggling doubts because one notice states

There are few old British army/navy pics mixed in with this search link....h
  • The crown states "Faithful reproductions may be reused" so how can I be sure it is deemed as faithful if i posted a colourized image on my own studio page ? DOnt want to upset anyone  ;D

Thanks for any views and opinions. I know 90% sure its okay to reproduce and share, but there is always that niggling doubt - so hopefully long term contributors on here will have a better idea than me and most of you would say YES of course it is okay to colour and share HAHA and where else one might get involved in history colourizations.
  • Thanks, Martyn
  • Ps. The text editor is causing me grief so apologies for bad grammar and formats.....Added is a photo i coloured of troops in the trenches, but no point in colouring them and nowhere to share. Im sure roots is probably not the right place!
