Yorkshire (North Riding) / Parish records - Snainton, Brompton by Sawdon
« on: Wednesday 01 March 23 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Looking to understand the parish records of Snainton and Brompton by Sawdon.  I have a Mary Baker daughter of John Baker born Jan 25, 1773 in the Snainton records and a Mary Baker, daughter of John Baker, Snainton, baptized Feb 21 1773 in the Brompton records.  Are these likely the same person?

Why are some of the Snainton record "born" and some "baptized"?

Thanks for any help,
Linda from Canada

Somerset / Births in Langport, Somerset
« on: Wednesday 22 April 20 03:52 BST (UK)  »
Looking for the maiden name of my 4th great-aunt Mary Day.  According to her gravestone in Richmond, Quebec, she was born May 18, 1842 in Langport, Somerset, UK. She married John Barrington Day (in Canada around 1863 we think but no proof) and first child was born in 1865 in Quebec. John Barrington Day was originally from Stoke St. Gregory but is found in the Canadian census of 1861 as a bachelor.

I can't find a record of their marriage or her maiden name but have most of the other relevant information about the family. Any help appreciated.

Canada / Issues with Canada 1911 Census
« on: Friday 20 March 20 04:01 GMT (UK)  »
My husband has several relatives who arrived in Canada in 1910 but I can't find them in the 1911 census, using both the Ancestry and FamilySearch searches.  They were living in Manitoba, around the Garson area, largely working at the quarry there.

Any help much appreciated.

Wexford / Kinchestown, Newtownbarry
« on: Thursday 10 October 19 20:02 BST (UK)  »
In the Parish Registers of St Mary’s Church, Newtownbarry there is a reference to Kinchestown under the "Abode" column.  Can anyone advise the location of this abode?

I am descended from a Protestant Kinch who moved from Ireland to Canada circa 1830 and still looking for clues as to the parish / village from which they came.

Berkshire / Shinfield – Welch / Simmonds / Davis
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 22:38 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for years to find the English family of my 2nd Great-grandfather.  With the help of this forum in a previous post and recent DNA findings I believe I have found the answer.  I started with his name Harry Welch and born in England (from family) and a birthdate of Dec. 10, 1851 from the Canadian census.

I believe he was born Henry Davis Welch, Dec. 10, 1851 in Shinfield, Berkshire to Henry Davis, a soldier, and Jane Welch.  (I have a copy of this birth certificate.) A Jane Welch, daughter of George and Lydia Welch, married George Simmonds in 1854.  Through Ancestry DNA matches, I am related to two descendants of Jane Simmonds.  I have reached out to one of them through the Ancestry message service but have not had a reply.

I am looking for help on a couple of fronts.

First I cannot find Henry / Harry Welch in the 1861 census – he was born too late for the 1851 census and was likely in Canada by the 1871 census.  I am guessing he was fostered / adopted by relatives or neighbours.  Are there any other records in Shinfield that might prove useful?

Second – can anyone suggest where I might get information on Henry Davis to start a search?  Far too many with that name if I can't find any further information.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Linda from Canada

Armed Forces / Looking for Assistance re Military Records
« on: Wednesday 17 October 18 00:42 BST (UK)  »
Where is the best source of information on British soldiers of the 19th century?  I have a name, age, location served in April 1871 (Canadian census), most likely regiments.  I would like to know if the soldier stayed in Canada (then likely my ancestor) or returned to England and, if possible, where soldier was born.

If someone can do "lookups" of this type of information, I would be happy to provide the details.

Are there passenger lists for ships leaving Rotterdam in 1910?  In particular I am looking for the passenger list for the Uranium leaving Rotterdam in February 1910 bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.  I have the Halifax passenger list but looking for the Rotterdam list to confirm my research.

Canada Lookup Request / Baker - Calgary
« on: Wednesday 01 August 18 17:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm having trouble finding Calgary obituaries from the 1990's online. Could someone point me to a source or if you have access, could you look up obituaries for a Claude Baker who died March 20, 1992 and Hilda Baker who died May 31 1993.

Thanks Linda
