Lancashire / James Johnston b.1866

Hello there!
I'm looking for a James Johnston (b.1866 manc, lanc - 28th december 1954 winwick, lanc)
For a place of birth, although the census' show manchester, lancashire as his place of birth, i can't find him on lancashirebmd
although my grandma seems to remember billinge or salford.
Have a marriage and a death certificate for James, just need to find a place of birth.
His parents (Thomas Johnston & Ann) are from ireland, so he could of travelled with them at an early age. Although where would i look for immigration records from ireland?
I'm almost certain he is a Johnston rather than a Johnson, as it says on the census' and when he was at winwick hospital he registered at James Johnston
He married in 1890 to a Catherine Mooney (Kate)

1901 - haven't found, found his wife Catherine who was living with her family - nicknamed 'Kate', so believed to be working away or somewhere else but wasn't with rest of family.

I'm sure it's Johnston, however i know it could of been written Johnson
