I've come across a photo of a Thomas Potter on the National Library of New Zealand's website and would appreciate opinions on date taken and age of the gent. Link below

Based on the fashion and ages, what would be a date (or date range) for this photo?

The photo is marked "W. JOHNSON Bank chambers Pitt & Market Sts" which was at that Sydney address from 1902. I only have a scan, not the original.

This couple married in 1910, so could this have been taken as their wedding photo? If it is 1910, he would be about 44 and she would be about 40, and second marriages for both.

Also, he seems to have a scar on his face which the photographer may have adjusted the light for - what do you think?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Australia / Madame Puto - Fortune Teller
« on: Sunday 23 April 17 22:43 BST (UK)  »
Are there court records available from 8 June 1904 that would identify the real name of "Madame Puto"? She advertises in Sydney from 1903 and before that in Tasmania from 1896.

"Police Courts.
Fortune-Telling.
At the Summons Division of the Water Police Court yesterday, before Mr. W. M. Macfarlane, S.M., "Madame Core," of 174 Riley-street, Surry Hills, and "Madame Puto," of 109 William-street, pleaded guilty to charges of fortune-telling. Both accused were sentenced to  three months' imprisonment, with hard labour. The sentences were suspended under the Crimes Act upon defendants entering into recognisances in £50 each to be of good behaviour for three months."

I'd like some opinions on these signatures. Possibly the same hand? Probably? Not likely?

Thanks  :)

Warwickshire / Searching for a photo of Sydney Vaughan Barber
« on: Friday 22 April 16 10:03 BST (UK)  »
I'm searching for a photo or portrait of Sydney Vaughan BARBER who used the alias Stanley BRINTON when he arrived in Australia from the UK around 1900.

This is for research of a photo of a couple from around 1905 that has the name Stanley Brinton written on the back, I'm fairly certain that I have the identity correct, but I'd like to confirm it with a comparison.

Sydney Vaughan Barber (solicitor), born 1866 Handsworth, Staffordshire, England

Married Kate Madeleine GREEN 1893 St George's Church, Edgebaston (divorced 1907)

Married twice in Australia (Evelyn I Hammond - 1910) and (Ella Goodman - 1935)

Died 1950, Sydney, Australia

His brother was William Henry Barber, married to Martha Constance Hattie Onions, benefactors of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham.

I have contacted The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, who provided a photo of William Henry (not a close enough resemblance), but did not have any of Sydney Vaughan.

Can anyone find a photo of Sydney Vaughan Barber or have some ideas of where to look?

Thanks in advance - Matthew  :)

Australia / NSW death record - Irene Brinton
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 02:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm hoping for some help with this.

The NSW death record number 11488/1935 for Irene E Brinton has "(Aveling)" in brackets under Father's Given Name, though the information seems out of place, eg. "59 YRS SYDNEY" under Mother's Given Name.

My questions are:

1. what could it mean to have Aveling in brackets?
2. what column heading would it likely belong to if not Father's Given Name (eg.Mother's maiden name??)

thanks
Matthew  :)
