Suffolk Lookup Requests / Margaret Nellie Jones (nee Lee)
« on: Tuesday 01 February 22 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters.
I have Margaret Nellie Jones ( nee Lee), a widow, dying in March 2005 in Ipswich District, Suffolk. The England and Wales Civil Registration Index lists her as #C33B, District/subdistrict #747/1C, entry number #19. She was 93 years old and quite likely to have been in a nursing home. I am writing a short biography of her and her husband Thomas. I am looking  for her obituary to add some colour to the lives I have reconstructed for them from the registration and census records. I would be grateful if one could be found. I do not know if she was buried, but a grave site would also be welcome. Thanks as always, Bryan

England / Vaughan of Courtfield,Welsh Bicknor, Herefordshire
« on: Friday 27 September 19 15:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters! As in the past, may of you have kindly solved some brickwalls for me. Now I am stuck again!
I am looking for the family of Lt. Colonel John Francis Vaughan (1808-1880) ( wife Eliza Rolls) in order to trace the brothers of both the Colonel and the male siblings of Reverend Jerome Joseph Vaughan ) 1841-1896. As a young man, Jerome aged 18 ( circa 1859) may have had a son out of wedlock, possibly born in a nunnery, or similar institution for unwed pregnant mothers........it could get quite complex !!!

Thank you all for any hints you can discover.

 Best wishes from Canada, LJ

Hi Rootschatters,
I am finishing a book on the history of Cumberland United Church, Ontario, for our 190th anniversary. It contains the biographies of all our Ministers since 1828! I am missing a couple of images of their graves, which I need before going to print. I was hoping that someone living close to the cemeteries would be kind enough to take some digital images of the full grave headstone or ground stone. These are the coordinates....I have no proof that there are any markers but I am hoping so. I have tried all the databases on Canadian headstones and so far no luck. Thanks as always, L-J

Reverend Peter Lindsay (1820-1912).....section 14 lot 238N    Prospect Cemetery ( the plot belonged to his daughter Margaret Lindsay)

Reverend William Anderson (1831-1916) ....plot C section 12 lot 14  Mt Pleasant Cemetery
Wife of Anderson.....Elizabeth Waters (1841- 1915) ......Plot O section 65, lot 3 Mt Pleasant Cemetery

Armed Forces / War Office Fleet WWII
« on: Saturday 01 July 17 01:20 BST (UK)  »
On a 1944 marriage certificate, a relative gives his occupation as Engineer with the War Office Fleet. He told his son they did duties like towing targets for shore battery target practice. Any information I can find for the fleet relates to WW1. Can Any Rootschatters help with information on the War Office Fleet WW2 activities and if possible how I or or his son might obtain his service file. The period is not included in his merchant navy record for service before and after the war.   Thanks very much LJ

Dorset / Thomas Soper, Mary and Joseph 16th century
« on: Wednesday 21 June 17 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I am writing a biography on Warren Young Soper (of Ottawa, Canada) and have traced his male line ancestors to Thomas Soper (b England 1589 d Massachusetts 1657), spouse Mary (1586-1618), and son Joseph (b 1638 England d Boston Massachusetts 1678).

I believe, though I am by no means certain, that Thomas came from Dorset, as that county was the source of many immigrants to that colony.

I am therefore looking for any information (bmd and other) on Thomas, Mary and Joseph in England.

Rootschatters have always come through in my past research!

I am very grateful for this and for any help I can get in this endeavour.

Best Canadian sesquicentennial wishes!      LJ

United States of America / Thomas and Joseph Soper 1638-1657 Massachusetts
« on: Wednesday 21 June 17 17:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

I am writing a biography on Warren Young Soper ( of Ottawa, Canada) and have traced his male line ancestors to Thomas Soper (b England 1589 d Massachusetts 1657), spouse Mary (1586-1618),and son Joseph (b 1638 England d Boston Massachusetts 1678).

Joseph married Elizabeth Alcock/Allcock (bt 10 October 1837), daughter of an early Massachusetts pioneer, on March 6 1656 in Boston.

I surmise that Thomas had lost his wife Mary, possibly to child birth complications in England ( there being only one child, Joseph) and had immigrated with his son to the Massachusetts Colony between 1638 and 1657. This would have been in the second wave of colonists.

I have consulted all documentation on the first wave to 1630 and could not find them; nor did I expect to do so given Joseph's birth date and location in England, unless Thomas went out ahead of his son.

Mary could not have died on the voyage as her death date preceeds any colonisation of Massachussetts.

I am, therefore, looking for Thomas' and Joseph's records in  ship's passenger lists and any other information on Thomas and Mary.

I have subsequent records for Joeseph and Elizabeth, except I would like to know more about Joseph as a possible captain in a militia or the Rangers.

Rootschatters have always come through in my past research!

I am very grateful for this and for any help I can get in this endeavour.

Best Canadian sesquicentennial wishes!      LJ

Lancashire Resources / Lancashire-Scowcroft Diaries Indexed
« on: Monday 13 June 16 15:03 BST (UK)  »
The Scowcroft Diaries for the east-central Lancashire are now indexed by chronology ( all the 19th century), surname and place with alphabetic internal search functions . They can be freely accessed at http://www.bifhsgo.ca/cpage.php?pt=319. Also included is the surname listing for the Scowcroft family tree and the booklet listing from the Turton Family History Society. I hope these break brick walls or add colour to Lancashire family trees. L-J

Lancashire / Jane Horrocks 1870 William Fletcher 1873
« on: Thursday 14 April 16 01:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,
I am looking for the current descendants of Jane Horrocks ( b 1870 Breightmet Hill E , Lancs) and William Fletcher( b 1873 Tonge Lancs). They married in 1897, are in the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and had two children to my knowledge , James (b 1900 Bolton reg. Lancs) and Amy (b 1905 Bolton reg. Lancs). One of Jane's siblings, Annie Horrocks, witnessed her marriage certificate .

My reason is that William's brother, Harry, is my great grandfather but he left his wife and children and has not been traced despite many years of creative searching! I hope that Jane and William's descendants my have news of the fate of gg uncle Harry!

Thanks very much as always! LJ
