Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / William Chapman and Fountain Inn, Morley
« on: Sunday 22 September 24 21:48 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my wife's Chapman family and her 4th Gt. Grandfather William Chapman was a Tailor until the 1861 census when he is recorded as Innkeeper in the Fountain Inn, Middlethorpe near Morley. Middlethorpe seems to be part of York so I am assuming this is in Morley. he died abt. 1865. I'm interested to know where I could find out more about why he would have changed from a Tailor (which seems to be a big occupation for a few generations) to Innkeeper. Also, any sources of information on the Inn around that time would be useful. Thanks

I am researching my wife's family and have her 2nd Gt.Grand Uncle Thomas Chapman (1864-1944) working as a Joiner and Cabinet Maker in the village of Morley, Yorkshire in the 1881 census. Then in the 1891 census he is a Teacher of Music and later on he is a Professor of Music. My question is, is this normal and would there be any online records anywhere covering this?? I find it quite staggering he went from a manual job, rather like his father and male siblings who were Tailors and farmers, to an occupation working from home as a Music Teacher fulltime. In fact in the 1911 census his son Harold is also a Prof of Music and a violinist.

Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks

Devon / Help researching Devon Brig captains 1800s
« on: Friday 21 July 23 18:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching my wife's family tree and specifically the Parminter family. I have discovered the following in the Gloucester Journal December 1805 ... 'Swansea St.Mary Capt. Parminter of the brig "Mary" married Miss Richards of Swansea'. My wife's 4th Gt.Grandparents were Richard Parminter and Elizabeth Richards and they were both married in 1805 so this looks connected. What I would like to know is where I could find more information on Brigs vessels in/around Swansea St.Mary/Devon in the early 1800s and anywhere I could find registration information for these vessels and what they may have been carrying to and from this part of the country. The baptism record for his son, also called Richard, said he was a Master Mariner. Any pointers would be very helpful. Thanks

The Common Room / Online Family History Book printing
« on: Sunday 27 March 22 12:03 BST (UK)  »
I am writing my paternal and maternal family history books and getting close to a draft print and wonder if anyone can recommend an online book printer. I know there are many but would like one that allows easy reviewing and has flexible binding options and page layouts. I'm writing my books using Pages so will export to pdf when done.

Has anyone used a specific website and happy with outcome?

Many thanks

Sussex / Help with Sarah Etheridge of Horsham b.1794
« on: Saturday 19 March 22 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
I'm writing my maternal family history book and one of my 3rd Gt Grand-Aunts is presenting a roadblock. Sarah Etheridge born 1794, baptised Horsham to John and Sarah. I have a marriage to Arthur Beer in 1821 in Itchingfield, Sussex not that far from Horsham. I have records for at least two children, William and Mary but how can I be convinced I have the correct Sarah Etheridge? There are several Sarah Beer deaths in Sussex that would fit so how can I be sure I have the right one??

Many thanks...

I have started research for my wife's parents farm at Saxton Grange which is near Towton, North Yorkshire (Formerly in West Riding). I have found all the Electoral Register records detailing who was occupying the farm at the time in 1848 when the Tithe Map was created. Either I'm mis-understanding something or there is a discrepancy between Tithe information and the Registers:

1848 Tithe Map for Saxton cum Scarthingwell, York shows in the location of the current farm a piece of land marked 76. The apportionment shows that this (along with many other parcels of land) was owned by Lord Hawke and Occupied by William Marshall. However, on the Electoral Register for 1848 it shows that a John Birkinshaw was occupier of Saxton Grange in the location identified by piece 76. See attached files.

Can anyone please explain this? I obtained the records from The Genealogist website and also discovered that the West Yorkshire Archive Service store them. I may decide to pay for their research service but would like to be clear on why there are discrepancies between the two sets of records. Thanks.

World War One / Gaps in WW1 service metal and awards roll records for Alfred Etheridge
« on: Tuesday 13 November 18 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
This time of year has nudged me to try and tidy up some records I have of my grandfather who served with the 19th Btn London Regiment (St.Pancras) during the last year of the war. His records show he was in the 12th Btn LR up until June 16th 1917 and then the 9th Btn on December 12th 1917 for a day while transferring to the 19th. I am wondering why there is a 6 month gap and whether I could find out where he was between June 17th and December 11th 1917. Thanks.

I have tracked down my ancestor Robert Campbell's military history in the Scots Guards and in the attestation when he enlisted in Glasgow in 1877 it shows he was initially enlisted in the Antrim Artillery Militia. He was about 18 years old at the time of joining the Scots Guards. Can anyone help me locate the Antrim Militia records as I am hoping it might give a clue as to his birth place and parents. Thank you.

Pulling hair out with this ancestor. Would like some help..

My Gt.Gt Grandmother Martha Rebecca Slade married a Robert Shaw Campbell on 27th April 1879 in St.Pancras.

1881 census has Robert Campbell with wife Martha and children. He was born in Ireland in 1857 and was a shoemaker in the Scots Guards.
1891 census has Robert Campbell with Martha and children, including son Robert Shaw Campbell. Birth place Ireland and a shoemaker. So he has been discharged.
His wife Martha Rebecca dies in 1893.
1901 census shows a Robert Campbell living with wife Nelly and his children from his deceased wife. He was born in Ireland and a House Painter.
Unable to find a marriage record for Robert/Nelly

In 1902 his daughter Ellen marries and father's name is given as Robert Shaw Campbell, painter. So the Robert Shaw name seems to be somewhat consistent.

In my attempts to go further back I started looking at his children for clues. I researched his son William, born about 1890 and found a William A Campbell baptism with father Robert Shaw Campbell.
I then searched London and Surrey, England, Marriage Bond & Allegations, 1597-1921 and found a record of William Alexander Campbell marriage to Zillah May Violet Ford Long in 1914.

I then hit upon a record in the British Army WW1 Pension Records 1914-1920 for William A Campbell with wife Zillah. Reading through the long military record his next of kin is given as Robert Campbell living at an address in Eastbourne, Sussex.

Searching the 1911 census for that address I find him but he is living with a Mercy Campbell and his birth place is given as Govan, Scotland!!! NOT IRELAND. He is a general labourer.

So the trail has got muddied after what was a promising start.

I am assuming the SHAW as a middle name is taken from his mother, but could be wrong.
I found ONE Campbell/Shaw marriage in Govan, Lanark for the right period.
However, I can't reconcile with the place of birth being Ireland in the census records.

Can anyone offer some help here please? Are there any other routes I could search or is there anything obvious I've missed?

Many thanks in advance.
