Family History Beginners Board / Missing Marriage Evidence ?Irregular?
« on: Monday 25 April 16 22:15 BST (UK)  »
Good Evening All,

Firstly I hope that I am posting in the correct place for my query. Apologies for any novice errors.

I have become quite stuck in my ancestry research. I have traced back to my 3rd Great Grandparents on the paternal side but I seem to have hit a complete wall here.

I Know they were Janet Hutton (Charwoman) B 1829 in Kirkcudbright & Robert Mark Painter) B 1828 Garlustown I have birth & baptism records for their children and they list Janet as Janet Mark (olim Hutton & formerly Hutton) and on census Janet states that she is married and then widow of Robert Mark Painter (Journeyman) BUT I cannot find for love nor money a marriage either in Liverpool or in Scotland for them. All I have are birth certificates & Church Records as they also seem to dodge census records. The addresses I have are basements of houses and research indicates that it was quite a poor life to live.

They are a tragic family and the story looks like Janet lost her husband, her daughter and then her eldest son was sent or placed on the indefatigable in 1871, and I have traced his life right through from there. I am just struggling to piece together life for Janet. I am hoping that somebody may have come across this before and may have experience of irregular marriages as perhaps this might explain why theres seemingly no official records.

I may indeed be completely wrong as I have only been researching for a year and so am probably lacking in skill too.

Thank you for your time reading this  :)
