Westmeath / Westmeath Birth of Michael Joseph KIERNAN
« on: Monday 15 January 18 07:15 GMT (UK)  »
Michael Joseph KIERNAN was born about 1826 - 1828 in Westmeath Ireland.  In 1846 he, along with Michael and Christopher MARTIN were convicted by the Westmeath Special Commission for shooting at Police, and all three were sentenced to transportation to Australia.  I am seeking any information in regards to the birth of Michael Joseph KIERNAN, particularly parents and any siblings.  I am also very interested in the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime.  My great grand mother used to tell stories when I was young about Michael Kiernan coming to Australia as a 'Political prisoner', but alas I was too young to express interest then.

The Common Room / Tracking Merchant Seaman records and voyagers
« on: Saturday 25 November 17 20:23 GMT (UK)  »
I am interested in finding out if there is a way to obtain further records or information regarding a merchant seaman David John Bowen. He appears to have been ticketed in 1846 with registration number 194 740.  I have an image, but it is too large to post here.  Also there are columns for voyagers undertaken, but information is recorded by a series of numbers.  If anyone has any idea of where I could find more information on David John or knows where I might search to identify the voyagers by these numbers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Gloucestershire / David John Bowen born about 1801
« on: Thursday 23 November 17 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,
I am searching for information and confirmation that I am on the right track with research on the family of David John Bowen.  I am a bit lost with where and how to search and seem to be floundering around a bit at the moment.  If someone could point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated.
What I know, or think I know;
David John Bowen was born about 1801 in Bedminster.  In Nov 1831 he married Winifred Price, who at the time I believe was a widow.  They had two children, David John in 1831 and william in 1835.  The 1841 census has the four living in Back Street, St Nicholas, Bristol. David John snr is listed as a seaman.
I am confident that I can to a small degree track the two children from this point, but unsure of the parents.  There are a number of deaths that I have found for David Bowen 1842, 1845 and 1850, but the ages dont seem to match.
In the 1851 census I find a David Bowen - retired mariner living in Chelsea, but would appear with a new wife (Mary) and an addition child (Albert).  I can't seem to find a death for Winifred between the 1841 and 1851 census, but there may be a few marriages in that time.
Importantly I cant seem to find anything to confirm the 1851 census is the same David Bowen as the 1841, nor any death for him after 1851 if it is.
Any suggestions on how I might find this out would be greatly appreciated.

Australia / Marriage of David John BOWEN
« on: Tuesday 22 March 16 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
David John BOWEN was born 12 Dec 1831 in Bristol England.  I believe that he may have arrived in Adelaide Australia in Oct 1852 aboard the 'Sultana', but have not confirmed this.  His brother William also emigrated to Australia at some point.
I believe David John married Catherine Amelia ASHER in Sydney 1855.  This information is from the birth registration of his eldest child, William Henry in 1856.  David and Catherine had 7 children in total, before Catherine's death in 1884.
David appears to have re married Bridgette HISEE nee SHANAHAN in 1885, before his own death in 1898.
I have been un able to find any record of David's first marriage and curious as to why.

Australia / William Henry Bowen
« on: Thursday 17 March 16 08:38 GMT (UK)  »
William Henry Bowen was born in Sydney in April 1856, the son of David John Bowen.  In Jan 1883 William married Margaret Fagan in the Parramatta area.  At some point in the early 1900s they moved their family out to the Mudgee area, perhaps stopping off in Bathurst along the way.  William Henry Bowen appears to have operated a corner store in Mudgee until his death in Sep 1921.  I am very interested in filling in the gaps of his or his families life.
