Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / First name of new born
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a record for a Doyle but cannot make out the first name of the newborn.  (See left on image.)

What confuses the issue is another record from Ancestry claiming John Doyle was baptised at Bellaghy on the same date.  I cannot find the record under the registers under Ballyscullion/Bellaghy.
(See right side of image.)

Are they one in the same person or should I be looking at a different registry for the Ancestry record?

Australia / Possible change of name opinion sort
« on: Friday 17 November 23 02:02 GMT (UK)  »
Many family members have been looking for this relative and my latest find could suggest our missing person has changed his name at some point.

Information to date (still unconfirmed):
Our hard to find relative is William Bowden born 1818 Chester, Cheshire.  Parents John and Ellen.
Supposedly arrived approx 1833 with both he and his father being miners'.

No one has been able to find out how he got to Australia.  We have records from December 1849 on - after his marriage.

I found a record of a William Bowden who arrived in 1833 as a convict on the James Laing, but died in about 1839 or so the record suggests.

I am wondering if this could be a possibility as a few of the details seem to match.

I would like your experienced opinions on this possibility.

Derry (Londonderry) / Assistance with fathers first name
« on: Saturday 05 August 23 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I have found a record of a marriage and cannot decipher the first name of the grooms father.

I have attached the record of the marriage (pdf)- look at the first one between Hugh Mackle and Mary Doyle.

The surname is crucial to finding out the correct Mary.

2 Mary Doyle's were married at the same church within 5 weeks of each other and both of their fathers' names were Louis.

Thank you in anticipation.

The Common Room / Family connection relationship dilema
« on: Thursday 03 August 23 05:36 BST (UK)  »
I would like someone to explain what to call the children's relationship i.e what sort of cousin if possible.

On my mothers' side is my gg grandmothers sister who married a man who is on my fathers' side - my gg grandfathers' brother son.

Both have had children.  What relationship are they to me other than some sort of cousin?

Down / Coulter, McKee, Welsh, McMullan and McCann
« on: Tuesday 23 May 23 00:37 BST (UK)  »
I have the following surnames Coulter, McKee, Welsh, McMullan and McCann all interlinking in Down around the Kircubbin area in the early 1800's.

To begin I have a gravestone with the following for a William Coulter:

COULTER
Erected by
William Coulter
in memory of his father
WILLIAM COULTER,
late of Rureagh, who died
16th July 1831, aged 78 yrs.
Also his wife
MARY COULTER alias WALSH
who died 7th January 1838,
aged 65 yrs.

The only confusion lies is which William is Mary the wife of - the father or the son?

I have found a marriage record in 1801 for a William Coulter and Mary Welsh but that does not clarify which William.  (Marriage 23 Aug 1801 • Presbyterian, Kircubbin,Down,Ireland)

There are also other William's in the area.

There is also a William who married a Jane.

William had a daughter Esther who married a William McKee.  This family then extends out to include the surnames of McMullan and McCann.

The same issue occurs with the McKee's there are many William's.

If anyone has any of these surnames from around the same area in the early 1800's I'm happy to provide more details to help sort who is who.

US Completed Requests / Blakely, Keyes, Hendrick
« on: Sunday 26 February 23 00:50 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a wife of a relative named Ruth Hendrick.  Her marriage to the Hendricks surname indicates her maiden name is Blakely.  The grave where she is buried indicate her maiden name is Keyes.

Her details as far as is known are:
Ruth Hendricks born 1881 died 4 AUGUST 1951  and buried at Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

She was married in 1940 Boston.

It has been indicated she was a teacher at the Winthrop school.

The married surname has changed from the original of Hendrick to Hendricks over time.

I've been looking for another marriage with no luck yet with these minimal details.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Dorset / Lock/Locke, Palmer and Beves clarification needed
« on: Tuesday 01 November 22 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
I would like your opinions on the information listed below and following questions:

This information has been compiled from a few family trees and research.  I have tried to be as clear as I can with the details:

Elizabeth Palmer baptised in Lyme Regis in 1718, 1723 & 1727 all indicating their fathers' name is John Palmer.  (3 different people)

Mathew/Matthew Lock/Locke born about 1820 Lyme Regis (one record found for this)

Elizabeth Palmer married Matthew Lock in Lyme Regis in 1746
Elizabeth Lock married John Beves in Lyme Regis in 1756
Matthew Lock married Anna Smith in Charmouth Dorset in 1756

Elizabeth Palmer deceased in Powerstock, Dorset 1754
Elizabeth Lock deceased in Lyme Regis 1802 (spouse - Mathew Lock)

There are a few other Elizabeth Palmers born around the same time but I've only included the Lyme Regis births with a father of John at this point.

There are also birth records with the name of the spouse listed as Betty Lock.

My questions are:

Which Elizabeth Palmer do you think married Mathew Lock.

Is the Elizabeth Lock who married John Beves Mathews' ex wife.

Is Mathew Lock who married Anna Smith the same Mathew lock who married Elizabeth Palmer.

The Elizabeth Palmer who died in 1754 - why would the death be recorded under her maiden name  if the record fits?

Is the Elizabeth Lock who died in 1802 whose spouse is listed as Mathew the correct death.

If you need anything further clarified, I will do my best but records are limited thus far.

Norfolk / Gunton marriages
« on: Tuesday 26 July 22 09:36 BST (UK)  »
I am researching William Gunton born 1785 in Manea Cambridge UK.

Records indicate a few things as follows:

He married Mary Hart in 1816 in Norfolk.

On the marriage record it states he was a widower and,

The children listed for him also mention a mother/wife by the name of Mary Billings after the Mary Hart marriage.

It is assumed a child by the name of Elizabeth is William and Mary Harts born 1816

Other children:  John, Henry, James, William and Matthew.

John b 1821 d 1865 no death certificate online
Henry b 1824 d 1864 no death certificate online
James b 1826 d 1902 no death certificate online
William b 1832 mother unknown on death certificate 1906
Matthew  b 1835 mother is Mary Billings on his death certificate 1919

I am trying to locate the indicated marriage before Mary Hart.  I'm not sure if it would be in Manea, Cambridgeshire area or Norfolk.

I am also trying to find a marriage to Mary Billings.

Was Mary Billings married previously?

If anyone is able to assist to sort out the marriages and mothers I would appreciate it.

Australia / Williams, Jacob/s or Taunton
« on: Saturday 02 July 22 06:33 BST (UK)  »
I have come to a point in a friends family tree where I can't figure out what has happened.  I'm thinking maybe an adoption at some point.

I have a record of Ernest Henry William Jacob/s birth registered in 1894 in Orange NSW - Parents - James and Jane
Next I have a record of Ernest Henry Williams recorded in the same tree for the above listed person.
Following this person the same tree has 2 marriages -
one being to Louisa Durrant Taunton and,
another being to Emily Louise Jacobs.

Where the confusion lays is as follows:

I have Ernest Henry William Jacobs born 1892 Lucknow, NSW - Parents the same James and Jane
The wife i've found is Emily L Ray who I assume is the 2nd wife listed above.

I cannot figure out why the sudden surname change to Williams and how Louise Durrant Taunton fits in as she was born in 1905 supposedly having 2 children to Ernest.  Louise/a in the first tree has her dying in 1987.  I haven't found Emily's yet.

Could anyone shed any light on this for me please?
