Prompted by Ancestry re-interpreting my DNA results, I took another look at the rest of the family. Aside from laughing at the sudden introduction of "Michigan settlers", which makes no sense at all, it struck me that my father has a supposed 24% Irish DNA. There is an NPE somewhere along the paternal line because my closest yDNA matches are all Gregsons (we're Houghtons), but I think it's fairly distant. My closest yDNA match on a 37-marker test is still at a genetic distance of 1.
Anyway, I've got a 99% confidence level on his documented ancestry back at least another 2, probably 3 generations from him and there's no Irishness there. (Plenty of Scottishness, though that is from NE Scotland, so less likely to be "Irish really".) One potential entry for the Irish DNA is his grandmother's parents' posting to Ireland, so maybe there was an NPE there, but 24% would still seem quite high.
So I'm left wondering just how much salt I should take these results with?
Irish DNA:
Dad = 24%
Mum = 4% (which is vaguely expected as her GGF was Irish)
Me = 0%
Sister = 4%
