The Lighter Side / Genealogy related funny
« on: Tuesday 19 April 22 08:20 BST (UK)  »
This guy makes brilliant cartoons several times a week. Today he posted this, which I thought was both funny and relevant:

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / My GGG-Grandfather, the goose dealer
« on: Monday 29 November 21 16:04 GMT (UK)  »
Think he may have been taking the mickey in the 1871 census. All of his other jobs involved coal. I'm curious what is written next to Goose Dealer though. It looks like it's in a different hand but I can't get a grip on it.

The Common Room / Potential missing twin
« on: Monday 22 November 21 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
I just received a birth cert for my 2 x great grandfather Thomas Collinge (b. 12/5/1854).

The time of his birth is written. I thought this meant that it was a multiple birth, but I can't find any other births that would match in the GRO index (name Collinge, mother's name Greenwood).

If the other birth(s) were still-born, would they not be registered?

Armed Forces / Punjabi soldiers WW1 records unearthed and part digitised

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere already, but if these were my ancestors I'd be grateful for every chance to come across this record set.

The Common Room / 1921 Census website traffic
« on: Sunday 31 October 21 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
I'm watching the countdown on FindMyPast's 1921 census page (not constantly  ;D ) and it suggests that the census is to be released at midnight on 6 January.

My FH research started in 2015 so I missed all the 1911 excitement. Does anyone remember whether the website coped with the traffic spike?

Just trying to decide whether to temper my excitement!!!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / How much salt
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 17:26 GMT (UK)  »
Prompted by Ancestry re-interpreting my DNA results, I took another look at the rest of the family. Aside from laughing at the sudden introduction of "Michigan settlers", which makes no sense at all, it struck me that my father has a supposed 24% Irish DNA. There is an NPE somewhere along the paternal line because my closest yDNA matches are all Gregsons (we're Houghtons), but I think it's fairly distant. My closest yDNA match on a 37-marker test is still at a genetic distance of 1.

Anyway, I've got a 99% confidence level on his documented ancestry back at least another 2, probably 3 generations from him and there's no Irishness there. (Plenty of Scottishness, though that is from NE Scotland, so less likely to be "Irish really".) One potential entry for the Irish DNA is his grandmother's parents' posting to Ireland, so maybe there was an NPE there, but 24% would still seem quite high.

So I'm left wondering just how much salt I should take these results with?

Irish DNA:
Dad = 24%
Mum = 4% (which is vaguely expected as her GGF was Irish)
Me = 0%
Sister = 4%

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Parents of Alexander Robertson
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
Have just ordered this from Scotland's People. For once, I hit my target first time rather than wasting dozens of credits!

I think it says his father was a blacksmith & joiner, but I'm not sure.

Also, is his mother May or Mary?

Maiden name Brown?

Many thanks in advance.

Wales / Welsh baptisms - maternal grandparents but not paternal
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 11:40 GMT (UK)  »
I don't know if this was a practice through all Wales or just in Flintshire, but the baptism records for several of my ancestors contain - very helpfully - the names of the parents of the mother. (See example.)

I was wondering what the logic was for doing this but not including the names of the father's parents?

The Common Room / Finding records relating to someone deported TO the UK
« on: Thursday 17 September 20 10:07 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather was deported from the USA back to England in 1929. I've recently discovered the nature of the offence, which was a bit of a shock. He was sentenced in late 1927.

While I've got irons in the fire on the USA side, I was wondering what sort of records would exist here for him?

All I have at the minute is an incoming passenger record with "DEPORTS" written over the top.
