Any help much appreciated in unravelling the birth and early years of Albert and the birth of Kate.

On 11th Nov 1918 at Ebenezer Chapel, Lyndhurst the Rev T Webb Scammell married Albert Hnry Bird (aged 37) and Caroline Kate Peckham (aged 38).  Albert was a local groom about to be discharged from the Army (no service papers survive) his bride, known to all as Kate was an established local logding house keeper at Oak Lodge, Ashurst.   Both stated their residences as Ashurst, Colbury.

Albert Henry has me stumped, he died in April 1962 in Lyndhurst Road less than a stones throw from where he'd lived with Kate all of their married life. The 1921 Census says he is 39 and was born in Ashurst. The 1939 Register records his DOB as 26 June 1881 but I can find no birth registration. The marriage certificate says his father was Alfred Henry Bird (deceased) a jockey.  I cant find Albert Henry or his father Alfred Henry at all, nothing prior to the marriage.

Kate was from a local family (George and Caroline Peckham) and had possibly romanced her age for the day (38 = birth 1879) because I believe she was baptised 4 years earlier 16th Sept 1875 in Southampton although I can find no appropriate birth registery. The 1921 Census says she was born in Southampton and gave her age as 40. On the 1939 Register she gave her DOB as 16th May 1879.  I do however have a solid track on her/family in Census returns etc right up to her marriage to Albert and consistently together afterwards, she died July Quarter 1954 and was aged 79 (born 1875).

Please can anybody help with Kate's birth registry and the 33 years pre-1914 of Albert's life ?

The Common Room / The web based Wartime Memories Project
« on: Friday 07 July 23 09:27 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody know if this project has stalled ?   I know of two people who have submitted a lot of material to them, both have had positive contacts with their volunteer researchers who confirmed progress and then completion at their stage one over 18 months ago another 12 months back. BUT the biographies/photos have never appeared on line and there is no response to any queries from the site itself, even when a site volunteer asked repeatedly on behalf of one friend.

They were about to send valuable ephemera but I have advised against it.

I am told that they are asking £25 membership now, is it become just a money making scheme ?

The Common Room / Deaths at Sea 1920's
« on: Wednesday 10 May 23 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all
I am going around in ever decreasing circles and in great danger of disappearing.............
I once had a favourite link/bookmark on my laptop to direct me to the "ledgers" of Deaths at Sea from the 1920's but it seems to have gone. They are on one of the websites and I have subscriptions at Ancestry and FindMyPast but I cant find them for the life of me.  Large, hand written ledgers, individual seamen listed, roughly chronological order. Please can anybody point me in the right direction, I just wasted 2 hours.
Any help appreciated, thanks

Lincolnshire / Jno Sharp son of Jno & Margaret Sharp 1756
« on: Monday 11 April 22 18:27 BST (UK)  »
I'm tying myself up in knots trying to follow a son of Jno & Margaret Sharp of Lincoln.

I found Jno (the son) baptised in Lincoln 17 November 1753 but I suspect he died because they baptised another son as Jno in Lincoln on 21 September 1756.  But then I lose the second Jno. Please can anybody help with either him or his parents ?

Am I correct to be searching expecting a Jonathan or a John ?

thanks for any help, Pete

The Common Room / Newspaper Library online subscription -v- FindMyPast
« on: Wednesday 24 November 21 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have subs to Ancestry and also FindMyPast, the latter particularly for using the Newspaper searches. Please can anybody tell me if a direct sub with the Newspaper Library would get me more/better coverage of UK newspapers than I currently get with FindMyPast.

The Common Room / Genealogy subscription websites
« on: Thursday 22 July 21 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I started my research in the 1970's when a lot of travelling was required. For what seems to be the last two decades and maybe longer I've been a member of both Ancestry and Find My Past and both have been useful in conjunction with visits to County Record Offices for copies of baptismal, marriage and burial registers, etc.

I know there is another site, The Genealogist, is this one I should be adding to my on-line subscriptions ?
Which of the sites has the best coverage of parish registers (middle and northern England) 1500's to 1800's ?

Thanks for any thoughts.
Pete

Please can some kind soul help me out. I have gone around in ever decreasing circles in the last few days. I am certain I found a chap who fitted the above name types who was baptised 1755-75 in the Fiskerton cum Morton area of Notts, but now I cant find it. I wrote it down because my memory is poor, but now I cant find the note and search as I might I can no longer find the original baptism. It is driving me around the bend !
thank you for any help
Pete
