Lanarkshire / Obituary lookup in Glasgow
« on: Friday 05 May 17 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

My Great Grandmother, Annie (Wilson) Burns died in Glasgow (Rosebery Street) August 9, 1961. I don't know if she has an obituary somewhere that might lead to more information about all of her children or where she is buried. I know her son Arthur was living with her in Glasgow and is the informant on her death certificate. I have birth certificates and info on her children but not all of their marriage info. Thank you very much for any information, Barbara Baxter

Antrim / searching for my Grandmother's half sister in Belfast
« on: Monday 20 March 17 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning Everyone,

My Grandmother had a half sister born in Rutherglen, Scotland in about 1918. The record that matches in Scotlands people is Ellen Hannah Burns.

Ellen was later taken to Belfast to live with the father's family. We know she married and lived in Belfast.

Ellen's mother is Annie Wilson Burns but I do not know the father's name. Her mother Annie Wilson was married to Philip Burns who died in WW1 in 1916- Ellen was born after he died.

Any leads or advice would be so appreciated, Thank you, Barbara Baxter

Lanarkshire / Paterson Family from Lanarkshire
« on: Friday 16 September 16 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

Thank you for this forum. The information is invaluable and has helped with breakthroughs that mean so much to me.

I have come to a brick wall with my 2nd great grandfathers family. James Paterson married Catherine Burns in the High Church in Glasgow on 02 Sep 1856. I found his military record (Princess Louise's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Princess Louise's 93rd Foot) and found him in census. Looks like his parents are James Paterson and Isabella Allen.

Family stories say that James Paterson had at least 3 brothers: Robert born about 1824, Andrew 1825, and John 1839. Robert and Andrew served as well, one in the "18th Regiment" and the other in the "Royal Artillery". Given the big gap in birth years among the four brothers, I suspect that there are some sisters in there whose names were lost to the family.

In different census East Kilbride, Glasgow and Douglas are all listed as birthplace for James Paterson. His parents James Paterson and Isabella Allen were married 18 Jul 1824 in East Kilbride.

Any information about the Paterson family would be most appreciated, especially anything on his siblings. Thank you so much, Barbara Baxter

Armed Forces Resources / 2nd Battn Black Watch-Joseph Burns
« on: Wednesday 03 August 16 17:34 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

Thank you for any help with my Burns family from Glasgow. Arthur and Elizabeth Burns had 9 children in Glasgow. I have them in 1891 and 1901 census. Their son Philip Burns born 1889 is my great great grandfather- he died in WWI. I am looking for his brother Joseph Burns born 1885. The Burns men were coal miners but also served in military. There is a  Joseph Burns, of the right age, who died serving in the 2nd Battn Black Watch, of "Fever WYD" in 1909. Any help finding out if this is my Joseph Burns I would be most grateful.

Thank you very much Barbara Baxter

Midlothian / Fraser Family of Canongate, Edinburgh
« on: Thursday 23 June 16 14:56 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

Thank you for the wealth of information posted here.

I have been able to trace back to my 4th great grandmother Christian Fraser born about 1787 in Canongate, Edinburgh. Her father is Daniel Fraser listed as a marble cutter or laborer on Christian Fraser's marriage to John Taylor (West Yorkshire Militia) in 1807. I believe John Taylor was at the Edinburgh Castle garrison in 1806 and married Christian Fraser in 1807. Christian and John Taylor had at least one child Margaret (my 3rd g grandmother) who moved to Yorkshire.

I will be visiting Edinburgh from the States in September. I would be looking for more information about the Fraser Family. Possible grave site for Daniel Fraser? Name of his wife and Christian's mother?

Thank you very much for any guidance, Barbara Baxter

Armed Forces / John Taylor in 2nd West Yorkshire Militia in Edinburgh 1807-1814?
« on: Tuesday 14 June 16 13:11 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

My 3rd great grandmother Margaret Taylor was born in Edinburgh to John Taylor in 1814. She is the only one on that branch of my family born outside of Sheffield, England. The most likely birth record for Margaret has her father John Taylor listed as a private with the 2nd West Yorkshire Militia. Margaret's mother is listed as Christian Fraser.

Would the 2nd West Yorkshire been in Edinburgh in 1814? Is there a way to learn more about John Taylor and the 2nd West Yorkshire Militia? Thank you very much for any assistance, Barbara Baxter
