Carlow / Bagnalstown Patt Clynch and Mary Byrne
« on: Thursday 08 December 22 03:45 GMT (UK)  »
Recently learned names of parents who remained in Carlow County: Patrick Clynch and Mary Byrne. four of their children settled in northeast Iowa USA in 1850's. Their son William, the oldest of the emigres, was baptized 20 August, 1820 at Catholic Parish at Bagenalstown. The NLI microfilm is impossible to read in at least half the surface area. Cannot spot the other three siblings: Mary, John, and James, the youngest of the four, is reportedly born in 1826. According to famly lore another sibling remained in Ireland as did the parents. Is there a pattern of say the oldest child remaining with the parents? perhaps the youngest? Or is such a matter entirely dependent on individual circumsatances? Patt seems to have wandered farther west than any of his kin. Is there any historic feature that attracted persons to the Bagnalstown area? The next closest relative would have lived at Cranemore townland west of Bunclody, the others at Kilrush in Wexford. i suppose there are countless persons with the name, Mary Byrne, but now that i know her name, thought i would include her.

Wexford / Roadside memorial Fr. Thomas Clinch
« on: Wednesday 06 April 22 16:39 BST (UK)  »
Construction of the M11 roadway south of Enniscorthy appears to have altered the spot where the 1938 memorial to Fr. Clinch stood. I am no longer able spot it using the google earth road tool. Can anyone update me? The memorial was about 5 kilometers south of Vinegar Hill on the road to Glenbrien. If removed, what became of it?

Wexford / Robert Cuffe, '98 rebel
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 16:07 BST (UK)  »
In Kilrush/Knockanure around 1998, a roadside memorial stone was erected. Robert Cuffe is named as a local rebel. Anyone familiar with this man? Only info I found was two households in Kilrush in 1853 with that surname with a few more at Bunclody.

« on: Friday 22 May 20 23:55 BST (UK)  »
I was informed that inter library loan system in USA has no member library with the book, "In Loving Memory of All Interred in Kilmallock Grave Yard. Can anyone suggest a book seller in Wexford that would have that book available?

Wexford / Roadside marker Kilrush
« on: Friday 27 September 19 16:58 BST (UK)  »
Traveling the roads of Wexford on g-earth, a stone 1998 historical marker was observed, but pixal limitation prevents reading the smaller print. The merker lies about 1.2 miles northwest of the parish church at Kilrush. Marker is on the section of road running northeast toward Gurteen Lower, just after Y junction of three roads. A large red roofed farm bldg lies just west on the west to east section of road. I would appreciate and ask a local to provide thr text of that stone marker. Kc

William Kenny of Knockanure is mentioned in a 1939 article (Echo) as though the audience of the day would recognize the name. Anyone know who he was?

Meath / Valentine Clinch married to Ann Kelly 1850s
« on: Wednesday 22 May 19 02:43 BST (UK)  »
About 1850 at Donore Joseph is born to Valentine Clinch and Ann Kelly. Four other children follow. Valentine is from the Clinch/Glynch family of Co. Wexford per the writings of Antony Ryan c.1939). Two of his boy leave for Nebraska, USA. Another son is father of P. J. Clinch of 1916 action and later Co. Meath politics. I have been unable to trace Valentine's lineage in Wexford. I wonder if Ann was a Wexford girl? Is she a Meath girl? Any living relatives in Co Meath area?

« on: Friday 17 August 18 03:33 BST (UK)  »
In the last week of May, 1798, John Clinch, a member of the Rathcoole (County Dublin) Yeoman infantry was convicted of treason and hanged June, 1st or 2nd. I would like to know if he was a Protestant or Catholic. Does there exist a list of yeomen membership with such information?
