Australia / Any info marriage/death Margaret MITCHELL Melbourne
« on: Friday 21 April 17 10:32 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace any info about my great aunt Margaret (Maggie) Mitchell. She was born in Sunderland UK in 1885 the daughter of Andrew Mitchell and Hannah nee Kennedy. Margaret was a dressmaker and family stories say she left England with her sewing machine! I know she was still in UK in 1921 as she was witness at her sisters wedding. I have found a record of a Margaret Mitchell arriving in Melbourne from London February 1927 on the ship Otranto. Address in Australia is Federal Mills Geelong. This would fit with her occupation. I can find no further trace so any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

Durham / Mackel Hoffman Knaak in Sunderland
« on: Wednesday 19 October 16 20:21 BST (UK)  »
Bit of a puzzler ???
I have Conrad Meckel (Mackel) age 24 marrying Margaret Hoffman spinster age 18 daughter of Jacob Hoffman in September 1857 in Holy Trinty Sunderland.
No trace of either Conrad or Margaret in 1861 census. Can't find any death for Conrad.
In August 1866 Margaret Hoffman spinster age 26 daughter of Jacob marries Frederick Knaak in St Peters church Monkwearmouth.
I am sure it is the same Margaret as her brother was witness at the 1st marriage and her sister witness at the second. Can't find another Hoffman family in Sunderland.
Could the first marriage have been annulled? Maybe Conrad went back to Germany and left her?
Anyone have any ideas?

Northumberland / Etal Presbyterian Church
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 08:48 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with the whereabouts of records from Etal Presbyterian Church. I have tried Berwick archives, Northumberland archives and Newcastle library. I asked at the visitor centre Ford /Etal and was told the church is now used as a visitor centre for Etal Castle. A small step forward but no records held there.

Here's hoping someone out there can help
