The Common Room / Ancestry search function
« on: Friday 11 June 21 19:30 BST (UK)  »
Just a heads-up, there is a problem with the Ancestry search function at the moment.

You can search, but don't expect to get results if you put much information into the forms. Use the keyword section for places, and don't put any dates in.

They are working on it, but at the moment, less is definitely more!

The Common Room / Old photos
« on: Wednesday 12 May 21 16:01 BST (UK)  »
A friend is currently sorting through her father's photos, and has found a lot of old photos of London from the 1950s. I may have some from my mother's photos, again 1950's, of various places. Is there anywhere to donate them to where they could be seen and used by others? it seems a shame to keep them in a drawer!

Northamptonshire / Families of Stoke Bruerne, Ashton, Roade and Blisworth

For those with links to the south of the county, I just found Norman Tew's old site, Families of Stoke Bruerne, Ashton, Roade and Blisworth,  at a different address:

 :) :) :)

The Common Room / Find my Past subs
« on: Sunday 03 January 21 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
My sub to FindMyPast falls due in the middle of January. I've had one of the legacy Britain subscriptions.

Just a heads up - with only 10 days to go, I've just had an email to say that the Britain subscription is being withdrawn, and I am being moved onto a Pro subscription. They are, however, offering it to me with (this year!) a 25% discount, and after this year it will revert to the normal 15% loyalty discount. That, of course, is if I stay!

Presumably that will now apply to all of us on these legacy subscriptions!

That, of course, leaves me free to rethink whether I bother with FindMyPast, or shift to having a British Newspaper Archive sub instead!

Technical Help / Rootsweb, firezilla and a virus!
« on: Tuesday 16 April 19 21:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm just starting the process of getting back in touch with my Rootsweb Freepage following the recent long outage.

I downloaded Filezilla (as recommended by Rootsweb), and on starting to install, was promptly told by my antivirus that I'd been attacked by a virus! Now thoroughly spooked. Has anyone else had any similar problems??

And can anyone recommend a suitable (ie easy to use) FTP programme?

The Common Room / Fold 3 "Save to Ancestry" items blurred
« on: Sunday 11 November 18 16:05 GMT (UK)  »
Having taken advantage of this weekend's free access, I found a record of my great-uncle, who died 1918 in Macedonia.

And there was a nice button saying "Save to Ancestry". Clicked on it, BUT when I went to his profile to see the saved item, it was either too small to read or blurred!

Please check what you've saved, before the free period ends! Easily solved now by taking a screen-shot, but not if the free access has ended!

The Common Room / Rootsweb pages

It looks like .....

Rootsweb pages are BACK!   ;D ;D

Now to regain connection to my page.   ::)

No sign yet of being able to update the gedcoms, but at least it's all there again.

Northamptonshire / Rootsweb
« on: Monday 20 August 18 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Having just had an email asking where my Towcester website is, I thought maybe I'd better post something!

Rootsweb has been down since December, and my site along with it. While some of it has been re-instated, individual sites are only now slowly being returned. I have requested mine, but no joy so far.

It can still be accessed at The Wayback Machine,

It can take a long time to load, be patient!

The trees are at , but are now sadly out of date, as it is not the last iteration which was returned to there. I do have further information, and can still answer questions, but my email address has been removed from there as well.

It's been a very frustrating few months!

Norman Tew’s Stoke Bruerne site, which has been removed from the web, is also available at the Wayback Machine,

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / FindMyPast DNA
« on: Thursday 02 August 18 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Just saw a new button on FindMyPast toolbar - DNA

So I clicked it, and found their new page.

Further exploration took me to Living DNA, which is promising matches by 1 Nov if we upload results from elsewhere by 1 Oct.

It says,
Our brand new upload DNA Matching portal will be available for free and for a limited time. By being one of our early users, you’ll be one of the first to receive your matches when the new portal goes live as part of our Family Networks Beta celebration.

BUT it then goes on to say,
You will also have the option to upgrade your account to get further analysis of your results such as ethnicity breakdowns.

Which sounds like extra money.  :(
