Australia / Victorian Burial Source - Elizabeth Underdown d 1898
« on: Saturday 21 January 23 22:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to locate the source of a burial for an Elizabeth Underdown who died age 30 in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 1898. Her father was recorded as Robert and her mother as Elizabeth.
I wrote down the details as above however forgot to write down the source and have been trying to locate it since. I have checked Find a Grave, Billion Graves, Australian Cemeteries Index and Remembrance Parks with no success.
I know the details of Elizabeth's family so there is no need to post info relating to them. I am just trying to find out where I got this information from! I have obviously missed some resource somewhere. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Eramophla

Essex Lookup Requests / Munson Mills in Poor Law documents
« on: Tuesday 04 January 22 04:29 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if someone can look up in the Essex Poor Law documents for the following person:
Munson Mills
- At age 19 in 1774, Munson became an apprentice farrier to Jona Oddy in Ardleigh, Essex. This was recorded in the apprentice indentures.
- Munson married Jane Wilby at Kirby-le-Soken, Essex on 23rd July 1783.
- Munson and Jane’s first child, a daughter named Jane is believed to have been born in Beaumont. She was baptised in Great Oakley. This child lived just over one month, and was baptised and buried on the same day in Great Oakley on 16th January 1785.
- Around the year 1785, not long after the birth of their first child, Munson and Jane decided to move from the Beaumont area of Essex to Dedham. Family lore is that they required a settlement certificate in order to move.
I am looking for any details from the Settlement Certificate that may assist me with further research.

Does anyone know of any sources that exist listing the employees and miners who left Cornwall to construct and work on the copper mine at Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands between 1837 and 1862? I am unsure where to start to locate this information.

Essex / Adult siblings spread across Essex workhouses in 1841
« on: Sunday 16 June 19 03:45 BST (UK)  »
I have just discovered an extremely interesting fact about a branch of the Mills family I am descended from.
My 5x great-grandparents Munson and Jane Mills (nee Wilby) had 6 known children between the years 1784 and 1798 - 1 in Beaumont, 4 in Dedham, and the last unknown. On moving from Beaumont to Dedham, Munson and Jane carried a certificate to show their place of origin so that in the event of destitution their former parish would be responsible for them. This was a settlement certificate that was issued in 1785.
Interestingly, 5 of their 6 children are located (as adults) in different workhouses across Essex in the 1841 census. Because each of the siblings are located in a different workhouse, it appears to be a 'deliberate' placement. If this is true, what would be the reason for this? This is where the siblings are located:
- Jane (married name Watsham, with husband Samuel) - located in St Osyth workhouse

- James Mills (with wife Mary) - located in Brightlingsea workhouse

- John Mills (with wife Sarah) - only one of the siblings NOT located in the workhouse - working as a vet in Suffolk - my 4x great-grandparent

-Thomas Mills (with wife Charlotte) - located in Great Oakley workhouse

- Sarah (married name Smith, with husband Charles) - located in the Langham workhouse

- Mary (married name Watsham, with husband John) - located in the Fingringhoe workhouse.

If anyone can enlighten me as to why 5 of these siblings would be simultaneously located in 5 different workhouses, I would greatly appreciate it. All of the families are out of the workhouse by the time the 1851 census was taken.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Profession on 1841 census
« on: Sunday 12 February 17 01:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Does anyone know what this profession would be on an 1841 census? It looks like 'serial property' but am thinking it is something different.
It is for my 4x great-grandfather who was 68 years old at the time and living in Cornwall in a mining area. He had previously been a miner himself.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / No cause of death on 1841 certificate
« on: Tuesday 31 January 17 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
I just received the death certificate of my 4x great uncle Christopher Pollard who died at Drift, Sancreed on 22/11/1841 at aged 70.

Unusually, there is no cause of death recorded. This section has been left totally blank.

I know in modern times if they were uncertain of the cause of death, they specify if the death is uncertain or presumed. Did the same rules apply in 1841? Or if they just didn't know, they left it blank?
