Family History Beginners Board / HAMPTON, Robert Collet - WW1 medallion
« on: Sunday 13 November 16 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
I came across the medallion pictured. It is solid brass, about 150mm (15cm, 6") in diameter, embossed on one side only. The perimeter inscription reads “He died for Freedom and Honovr” and the name is Robert Collett [sic] Hampton.

In case the picture attachment won't work, the medallion is embossed with a woman, presumably Britannia holding a trident in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her reaching left hand. There is a male lion standing in front of her. Both are looking to the right. There are two dolphins in random locations on the background.

Robert Collett Hampton was my great uncle and he died in 1917 in Belgium during WW1.

I would like to know something of the history of this medallion. Who produced it? When was it produced? Who it was given to initially? etc etc.

Family History Beginners Board / THOMPSON - William Thomas Denis 1840-1919
« on: Saturday 22 October 16 02:08 BST (UK)  »
I want to find birth records for my great grandfather William Thomas Denis Thompson. He was born 1840-1842 in Co. Cork Ireland.

The only documented information I have is on William’s 1919 death certificate that states where born as “County Cork Ireland” and that he was aged 79 when he died. This puts his year of birth at 1840.

However on his son’s 1877 birth certificate it states that William was 35 years old. This puts his year of birth at 1842.

William was a gold miner and moved around a lot.
1871 – Thames, New Zealand
1881 – Hillgrove, New South Wales, Australia
1906 – Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Australia.
So the records are fragmented.

Family History Beginners Board / HAMPTON Frederick Blagg 1814-1859
« on: Saturday 22 October 16 01:40 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find more information on the life of my 2nd great grandfather Frederick Blagg Hampton.
In particular his military service and the meaning of KIC associated with his name.
The following is documented information
1815 – Christened in Westminster, London, England
1841 – Married Matilda Stratfold, Woburn, Bedfordshire, England
1851 – Chief constable, Isle of Islay, Cambridgeshire, England
1855 – Immigrated to Sydney Australia
1856 - Inspector of Sydney Police
1857 – Appointed to Native Police, Northern District (Assumed Brisbane)
1859 – Death in Brisbane Australia.

The following is conjecture
“He served with the British Auxiliary Legion 1835-1837 as a Captain of artillery.”
This is based on
•   The death notices for 2 of his daughters had him noted as “Capt Frederick B Hampton K.I.C.-B.A.L.”
•   The occupation of “Captain of Artillery” was noted on the marriage certificate of his son Robert Collet Edwin Hampton.
•   A sliver snuff box presented to him on leaving Sydney inscribed:
                       Capt Frederick Blagg Hampton K.I.C.
late of the British Auxiliary Legion
and now Inspector in Charge of Division "D" of
the Metropolitan Police Force of New South Wales.
As a mark of esteem from a few of his friends in his district
                       Sydney 1st May 1857.
