Hoping someone may be able to confirm whether these two people (married) were in Jersey. I believe Joseph was born around 1820 and Catherine 1830. Their son James Thomas Smith says on his 1876 marriage certificate (age 24) that he was born in Jersey. So that would be around 1852. I believe they were Catholic, as James was married in St Patrick's, Sydney. After searching for ages, I'm told there aren't any Catholic records online yet. Hoping someone can help, please. Many thanks.

Cavan / Bernard Fitzsimmons, from "shop man" to Aussie convict.
« on: Sunday 29 September 19 12:21 BST (UK)  »
My 3rd great grandfather was Irish convict Bernard Fitzsimmons, a "shop man", from County Cavan. From his convict papers in NSW, it seems he was born around 1803. Convicted of forgery at Kings County. Sentence term: 14years. Ship: Elphinstone. Departure date: 8 September, 1838. Arrival date (Sydney): 29 December, 1838. A son Thomas (13) also came with him. However, it could be that person is a brother or cousin. He also has a long criminal record in Australia. Though not married, he had two children in Australia with Sarah Ann Fitt, one of which was my 2nd great grandfather (George Henry, named Fitt and Stephenson - her previous husband's surname). I'd appreciate any information on Bernard. Many thanks.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / James Henry Smith, born 1852
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 03:48 BST (UK)  »
My 2nd GG's marriage certificate (Sydney 1876) says he was 24 & born in Jersey in 1852. He lists his father as Joseph and occupation as a mariner. However, I cannot find any record of a Jersey birth. I did find a record from the 1861 census which lists a James Smith (17) as a sailor and a Joseph Smith (41) butcher. However, the census says they were both born in England, which conflicts with the marriage certificate. Not that these were always accurate, or that people told the truth. He does lists his address as "all around the Australian coast"!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Wilkinsons and Dewhursts. Which ones?
« on: Wednesday 08 August 18 03:36 BST (UK)  »
Trying to investigate the line of my 2nd great grandfather was Robert Henry Wilkinson, born at Walton Le Dale 1853 to Henry William Wilkinson and Mary Dewhurst. Beyond that I'm stumped, as there are so many of these surnames. Other information: Robert immigrated to Australia in 1875. He married Jemima Rice in 1875. They had 13 children.

The information I have on his parents are: Henry W. Wilkinson, born Mellor 1820. Mary Dewhurst b Samelsbury 1823. Am I on the right track.

I have so many doubts. Beyond Henry and Mary I am only guessing.

Thanks for any help.

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / FREE BEER. Lookup request: James Thomas Smith
« on: Monday 29 January 18 04:33 GMT (UK)  »
James Thomas Smith, my second great grandfather, claims (on his 1876) marriage certificate (to a Mary O'Connor) to have been born abt. 1852 in Jersey (parents Joseph and Catherine). I can not find him. Maybe it was actually Guernsey. Either way he's a scallywag. He said he was a mariner and his address was "all around Australia". Many thanks to anyone who finds anything. So important, as it's my direct paternal line and I'm stumped. FREE beer to anyone with result and visits Perth :)

Ross & Cromarty / christiana Munro. Mum and dad, John & Margaret. Who were they?
« on: Monday 29 January 18 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
There are three of us in Australia who want to know. In fact, there's only one now. The other two gents ((one of whom has been searching for nine years) have given up. I hold on to hope.

These Munros are either from Sutherland, or Ross-shire. Here's the story. Hope someone can shed light, as it will save my eyes, neck and fingers.

My third great-grandmother Christiana Munro(e) emigrated from Cromarty to Sydney aboard the Lady McNaughton in 1838, arriving 1839. She came as part of the Bounty Scheme, with Donald McDonald's family – a large one, with wife Mary and six children.

From her immigration card she is listed as a "native" of Dornoch, the daughter of John Munro, a farmer in the parish of Logie and Margaret Munro(e), his wife.  Age was 24 on embarkation (birth circa 1814). Occupation, dairymaid.

She married English convict James Everson in 1840.

Unfortunately, that's all I have to go on. I have tried tracing her through Scotland's people but there are many Christy or Christiana Munros born to a John Munro and Margaret (surname unknown).
