Lanarkshire / Culhane in Glasgow
« on: Saturday 05 November 16 01:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am a complete beginner to Scottish research, and would like some guidance on where to search:

I have recently found an Australian newspaper report of the death in Ireland of the mother of a local (Australian) woman. The article mentions 3 of her children in Australia, one son (presumably also in Ireland), and 6 children in Glasgow, Scotland.

Unfortunately, I don't know the names or ages of the children in Glasgow.  :-\

What I do know is that their parent's names are James CULHANE and Catherine nee MURPHY from Aradlahon (or similar spelling), Limerick Ireland. James died pre 1901, and Catherine's death was reported in the Australian newspaper 28 Mar 1914. She was reported to be 96yrs old at the time of her death in Limerick, so of childbearing age between about 1834 and 1863. The 3 children in Australia were John (born circa 1845), Bridget (born 24 Jan 1856, baptised RC Kildimo district), and Catherine (born circa 1859). The other son mentioned is "Mr P Culhane" - very likely to be Patrick.

From the searches I have done so far, I haven't been able to identify any potential sons in Glasgow, and it seems that there aren't any Scottish records that are searchable by parent's names. Can anyone suggest any way forward?

Thanks

Warwickshire / George WATKINS help with 1881 & 1891 Census
« on: Friday 19 October 12 01:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have been looking for George WATKINS (born 1860 in Hay BRE or Clifford HEF) in the Censuses, but can't find these 2 years. His mother Celia WATKINS was not married when he was born.

In the 1861 Census he is at Clifford HEF with his mother & Grandparents Thomas & Sarah WATKINS

In the 1871 Census he is in Birmingham with his Aunt & Uncle Sarah Agnes & Charles MOORE (his name here is George Watkins Moore). Between 1873 & 1879, the Moores move to Tamworth STS but he did  not go with them.

In Dec qtr 1881 he married Emily Mary WICKSTONE in the Birmingham Reg Dist

1881 & 1891 Census ???

In the 1901 Census he is with his wife & 2 daughters (Lily, b 1883 & Emily b 1885) in Coventry.

In 1911 Census he is with his wife & 2 young girls (visitors) in Coventry. I can't read the number of children that they had - I think it is a oddly-written 2.

I'd like to see the other 2 census to confirm 2 children and also see if his mother is with him at any stage. She married John TOLLEY in 1861, had a son John jnr in 1862 in Hay, then she & the baby seem to vanish. John snr is remarried by 1871.

Any help in finding him would be much appreciated.

« on: Thursday 09 February 12 10:29 GMT (UK)  »
Could I please get some help with reading a surname on 1851 Census at Blatherwycke? I'm looking at HO 107/1746 at John 55yrs & Sarah 65yrs BROWN & their visitor Elizabeth (Courley?) aged 22 born South Luffenham RUT. I suspect a relationship to John (possibly niece) as he has 2 sisters whom I have not yet traced forward.

Rutland Lookup Requests / LARRATT - EDNOTT marriage 1759
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 04:46 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone will be able to prove or disprove my suspicion that the Eleanor EDNOTT who married George LARRATT in South Luffenham in 1759 was a widow.

I can't find a record of baptism, but I see that there was an Francis EDNOTT, son of Francis and Eleanor baptised in 1754 and no other children. I'm guessing that Francis snr died.

Its also possible that Eleanor was baptised as Elizabeth in 1738.

Family History Beginners Board / Missing, presumed emigrated. How to proceed?
« on: Monday 22 December 08 08:25 GMT (UK)  »
I'm following the siblings of an ancestor and I found one who married in 1870, had 3 children, then cannot be found on the 1881 England&Wales Census, nor can her husband and children. Unless there has been a transcription error, I'm assuming that the family emigrated somewhere.

I used familysearch to check the 1881 Census. That site will also search the Canadian and 1880 US Census for people of the same name and birthyear range. As I got no matches, should I rule out those 2 countries as possible destinations?

I know that emigration to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa was common at that time, but where else should I Look?

I'd appreciate some advice from anyone who has tried this - regardless if it was successful or not

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / UK Electoral Rolls
« on: Saturday 29 November 08 21:54 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently searched an electoral roll, but the person I expected to find was not on it despite having lived in the area for at least a decade. My guess is that he was not eligible to vote.

Can someone please tell me what was the eligibility criteria to be included on an electoral roll in the 1840s? I'm sure that one must be male and over 21 yrs, but I suspect that there might have been some land ownership / wealth or citizenship needed too. Could a Welshman enrol in England and vice versa?

Thanks

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / 1841/51 Census look-up please Daniel Jones Innkeeper
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 00:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm a bit worried that I may have created a link where there isn't one and would like some help to check my theory.

Ann Amelia PROSSER was born circa 1803 in/near Abbeydore HEF and married Daniel JONES in 1824 in Wormbridge. With limited access to non-indexed census returns, I couldn't find anything further on this couple, but recently I found a marriage of an Ann Amelia JONES in 1851 at Rockfield and her father was Daniel JONES, innkeeper. Might be coincidence, so I found her in the 1881 Census and saw that she was born in Abergavenny circa 1826. I then found her baptism (as Anne) and that of a younger sister Sarah in 1828. Their address was listed as Cross St and Daniel's occupation was recorded as victualer. It seems a cosy fit, but could be wrong.

Would someone please check the 1841 or 51 Census for a Daniel JONES, innkeeper with wife Ann Amelia (or just Ann). In the 1841 they should have Ann jnr with them and Sarah (unless she had died) and possibly more children. I think that they may have moved from Abergavenny after 1828. Ann Amelia Jnr stated that her residence was Monmouth at the thime of her marriage (1851).

Any help will be much appreciated
Thanks

Monmouthshire / Pontyskit or Ponyskit
« on: Thursday 31 July 08 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know of a place called Ponyskit or Pontyskit (probably near Cwmyoy)?

The parish registers transcripts for Cwmyoy include a marriage of Joseph HAPLEY and Sarah MILLETT in 1854 and both are recorded as living at that village/place.

I haven't had any luck finding them after this date and was hoping that they might be still in the area only mistranscribed on the 1861 Census. Both were recorded as being 28yrs at the time of their marriage, but I know that Sarah was born in 1824 at Grosmont.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've found the death in Queensland Australia of a long lost relative named Maria, but I'm having a hard time filling in the blanks in her life.

I know that she was baptised in Stroud in 1836. I've seen her in the 1841 Census, and possibly the 1851. I know that she married James Morris GRIFFITHS (when and where is a mystery - no matches in freeBMD), and that they had at least 3 children (one born in 1876 in Queensland, and one who married in Australia in 1883). I can't find their entry to Australia either.

I've checked the 1861 Census on one of those pay for view sites without success.

I'm open to suggestions on where to look now. I hope someone can help.

Sandra
