Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Writing my History
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 12:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I had an idea to write everything down that I know about my family history - whether they are factual stories or those just passed down.  I would like add in things like what I have found out through my research and how I came to the findings.

Has anyone else done something similar?  I'm not too sure how to put it all down.  Obviously my FH package can give names, places, dates, etc, but I would like to expand (and make it clear if it is "just a story" and may not be true!).  My idea was to split everything into four sections - that of my grandparents names - Fowler, Hendry, Morrison and Swanson and an introduction.

I also thought that once I had put something together (how long will this take!) I'll pass it onto family and see if they can expand or put in their own additions (and I'll make it clear that that info came from someone else).

Hope this makes sense and I welcome any suggestions which may be easier!

Hi

I came across books of Remembrance for both Warriston and Seafield Crematoriums.  You can find them on the left navigation bar.

I've found a couple of my relations.

The Common Room / Causes of deaths - meanings
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 19:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Some causes of death mean absolutely nothing to me!   :-\

Does anyone have a website they use or do most just use a search engine to find out the meaning?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Wedding Group - date and uniform?
« on: Monday 29 October 07 21:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I was wondering if anyone can date the attached photos.  If it is who we think (my G Grandparents) they were married in 1917 but we are not too sure if this is who we think!

Also if anyone can let me know the uniforms that would be an extra bonus!

Many thanks

The Lighter Side / Gills of Whisky
« on: Friday 10 August 07 12:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have copies of statements from a murder trial in 1890, where my G Grandfather at the age of 6 was sent out by his mother for "gills of whisky" from the grocers.  Can anyone tell me what is a "gill of whisky" is?

Thanks

« on: Friday 10 August 07 12:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to find out where two grocers were in Leith.  The names I have are Sandersons and Stevensons.  This will be around 1890.

Thanks

The Common Room / Getting info from "Family Tree"
« on: Monday 06 August 07 13:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone.  I'm looking for a bit of assistance.

I received today a handwritten letter from someone (via my work address) saying he thinks we are "fairly closely related".  He doesn't state how we are "fairly closely related".

I think what I'm a wee bit concerned about is that this person has written to my work but does not mention how he linked me to there.  He has mentioned that he found me through "Family Tree".  I use the family tree maker for my website, could this be the "Family Tree"?  I think I put details into so many sites when I first started out I have forgotten about them!! ::)

Still confused how he got my work address though!  ???

Re-reading the above I've blabbed on a bit but basically my question is what will the "Family Tree" be where he has traced my family history details?

The Common Room / Dad on a bike
« on: Friday 22 June 07 21:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My dad has asked if anyone can give him more information on the attached photo.  Dad says the bike wasn't his but seems to remember a customer going into the garage where his father worked a Wolseley salesman in Edinburgh and dad got to sit on the bike.

Any info on the bike most welcome!
Thanks

The Common Room / Recent Medical Records (Edinburgh)
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 20:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My sister has asked that I try and help her find out if she can access her own medical records from the hospital that she was born in - Elsie Inglis Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh in 1975.

I've done a google search and came up with the following website http://www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk but not sure if this is the correct place.

She has asked her doctor (about 5 years ago) but there is no mention of what she is looking for in her records.

Has anyone else tried to access recent medical records?  I'm assuming with the FOISA my Sis should be able to access her own records if there are any.

Thanks in advance
Sharon
