Somerset / Missing John White from Wiveliscombe after 1851
« on: Monday 22 April 24 23:40 BST (UK)  »
My GG grandfather William White was born in Wiveliscombe Somerset in 1836. He was one of 11 children born to John (sr) and Elizabeth White. The family are there in the 1841 and 1851 census returns but not to be found after that date.

In 1857 The entire family except William and John (jr) move to Australia. William goes to Plymouth and joins the Royal Marines but I have no idea what happened to John.

John was born in Feb 1831 and was later recorded as a plumber and glazier in the 1851 census.

I have been in contact with a descendent of those that moved to Australia. Australian records suggest that the fate of William and John were unknown to John (Sr) as recorded on his death records.

If anyone is able to find an opening here that would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance!

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Missing Edith White from 1881 onwards
« on: Monday 08 April 24 12:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm missing an ancestor Edith White from 1881 onwards. She was born in March 1862, the first child of William and Margaret White in East Stonehouse, Devon. She appears on the 1871 and 1881 census returns and is present at her sister Clara's wedding in 1881. After that I cannot find her...

Any help much appreciated. Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Adding additional surnames in baptism records
« on: Monday 08 April 24 12:39 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking at some baptism records in Moreleigh Devon in the 1820/30s. There seems to be a practice of adding what appears to be a surname after the child's Christian name.

My ancestor Margaret Lock appears as Margaret Evans Lock. It followed her to the 1851 census as Margaret E Lock. I never saw it referred to again until her death certificate when she was Margaret Ann. Her youngest sibling also had the Evans but the eldest did not.

Was this used to help differentiate between others with similar names? The parents in this case were John and Ann Lock. There was (perhaps) another John and Ann Lock who had a child 15 years prior to the siblings I am interested in that took the name Boyles/Bowles.

I'm hoping there might be a clue as to the mother's maiden name. Would she have been an Evans? It appears that she was born in Cork around 1797 so having a maiden name to follow up would be a great help.

Thank you in advance.

Armed Forces / 1841 Army Pensioner in Devon - where to start...
« on: Monday 08 April 24 12:28 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor John Lock who was resident in Morley south Devon between 1828 and his death in 1845 (aged 57). On his children's baptism records, he is listed as a labourer but then in the 1841 census he is reported as an army pensioner.

My question is where to start with the army records? I'm not sure where he was born - there are a few Locks in the village which makes me think he came home after his service. There are blanks in the parish records pre-1813 which makes it difficult to check.

Presumably he would have joined a Devonshire regiment and had to do a certain amount of time to qualify for a pension. He married a woman from Ireland (Cork)so it makes me wonder whether he went there during his service.

Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated. I've searched for a lot of Royal Marines but no  Army ancestors from this era and I'm not sure where to start...

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering death certificate
« on: Monday 01 April 24 22:58 BST (UK)  »
I think I have the death certificate for my GG grandfather William White. Some of the details are not too clear to me... If anyone can help that would be great!

He was an XXXXX labourer and pensioner from the Royal Marines.

Cause of death Natural Causes XXXX XXXX

I wasn't sure about this bit but I think it reads 'Certificate received from Richard B XXXX coroner for county borough of plymouth inquest held 11 March 1893'.

I was really hoping that there might be some other identifier linking a family member to William. The name was just a bit too common to assume I have the right person...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Armed Forces / 1861 census mystery Royal Marine on Vancouver Island?
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 18:34 BST (UK)  »
I'm investigating a GG grandfather William White, a Royal Marine from Wiveliscombe in Somerset born in November 1835.My research feels a bit untidy at the moment...

I can't seem to find him in the 1861 census - there is a William White RM private of the correct age but listed as being from Devon. Perhaps this is him but I am having a few doubts...

If it is then there is a mystery - the census return is from HMS Jasper travelling between Bermuda and England. However, there are 3 pages that relate to Jasper and after a blank page, two pages that relate to a Royal Naval Hospital on Vancouver Island. His name is listed there along with various other navy and RM personnel. Firstly, I wonder if that was him and secondly, why would the records be mixed up like this?

I have the ADM157 attestation papers for a William White from the national archives that may correspond to my GG grandfather but I am not convinced I have the right guy. There are a couple of areas of the service record that I cannot read that may provide clues - the line below his name reads '1 xxx xxx' and then the date 29th April 1861. He potentially was in Canada on the 7th April... Later on near the bottom it reads 'not xxxxx'.

He signed up for 12 years in 1858 and only completes 3years service. There must be a reason for that...

The ships he was linked to - HMS Wellington did very little of interest but HMS Topaze went to the Pacific and had links to Vancouver Island - including assisting in building a lighthouse there. I've not really checked out the dates it was stationed there but it would appear that it was there a long time after William Pope left the RM in 1862 - perhaps the ship came back or perhaps he came back on another ship.

The more I think about it, I have reservations that I have the right William White from Somerset. I have the right William Pope getting married in East Stonehouse in June 1861 and then appears again in the 1871 census as a Royal Marine.

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

I'm really struggling with the 3 medical conditions that contributed to the death of a GG uncle in 1887. If anyone could help that would be wonderful. Thank you in advance.
