Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / York
« on: Saturday 19 June 10 19:08 BST (UK)  »
I am just wondering if anyone is going anywhere to look at any electoral registers in York.
I live in the south and cant get to York or I would be there like a shot.
I was wondering if anyone could look up my grandmother for me, as it would certainly answer a few questions.
In 1911 I have her on the census at home with her father living at Queens Staith, Skeldergate. Her name is Sarah Todd. What i was hoping some kind person would do is to look at the years to 1917 to see when she went to Scotland. As she marries there in 1917. All of her family stayed in York.
Mystery no 2. In 1922 Sarah comes back from Scotland to York, where she has 4 children, again I know she was still in York in 1930 as her youngest son dies there, and would love to know when she went back to Scotland. She was at that time living at 3 Beedhams Court, Skeldergate. The next time we pick her up is back in Scotland in the early 1940's. I would be very appreciative of any help.
Thank in advance.

Ireland / Culligan
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 12:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone can help me, or point me in the right direction.
I am trying to find the birth of John Richard Culligan born 26th August 1919. I cant find one in England but I do know there is an Irish link.
I have the Baptism for him in Hereford in 1919 on 28th September. Mothers name Margarita Culligan and no fathers info.
I know that at some point John was taken to Ireland and was attending the Artane School which he said he ran away from.
John is no longer alive, but had a very soft Irish accent and said his mother was an Irish barmaid, which is why I think he may also have been born somewhere there.
Any help in tracing his birth would be greatfully recieved.

« on: Monday 27 October 08 22:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
Can I ask if anyone would know what was at 75 Huntingdon Road, York, my time frame is 1926-1930. Is there a chance that it was a hospital, as I have both a birth and death at the same address, the parents didnt live at Huntingdon Road, so I was just wondering.

Many thanks in advance.

Europe / Info needed for Russian Jews.
« on: Monday 15 September 08 21:16 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can point me in a direction that could be of use. I am rying to find a site that deals with bmd in Russia, I am trying to find birth certs for Hyman Joseph ostrofsky and his wife Millie Gralnick. Both these people were Jewish and were sneaked out and to England sometime after their births, 1901 and 1905ish. There is a family story that they had been smuggled out and as Millie was very young her mother was told to keep her very quiet or she would give them away.
Hyman and Millie married in Hendon in 1926, and their surname changed to Osterley during the 2WW. Unfortunately their is no one to ask anymore about what happened.
What I wanted to know is if there are any sites that I could get their birth certificates from, or to look up siblings etc.
many thanks in advance.

England / Mackricken as a first name.
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Has anybody ever heard of Mackricken as a first name.
I am looking for a Mackricken Softley married to Eliza Denyer. I have the marriage on Ancestry and it puts him as Mackinckin Softley m. 1842 Portsea Island, Hampshire.
They have a son John James and on the IGI states him as Macricken.
Now apart from these two mentions I cannot find him on census returns as he isnt with his wife and kids. Before 1851 I cant find him anywhere.
Any ideas really would be great as I cant get any further back on this man.

Regards
Anne.

World War One / All is Secure
« on: Saturday 22 December 07 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
I RECIEVED THIS POEM THE OTHER DAY AND THOUGHT IT WA LOVELY. I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE IT .

IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
HE LIVED ALONE
IN A ONE BEDROOMED HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE
AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOUSE DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE
NO TINSEL NO PRESENTS NOT EVEN A TREE
NO STOCKING BY THE MANTLE JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES AWARDS OF ALL KINDS
A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT IT WAS DARK AND DREARY
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING SILENT ALONE
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOMED HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER
NOT HOW I PICTURED A LONE BRITISH SOLDIER
WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO THE FLOOR FOR A BED.

I REALISED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT
SOON ROUND THE WORLD THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOY FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY ALONE
ON A COLD DHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE
'SANTA DONT CRY FOR THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM I DONT ASK FOR MORE
MY LIFE IS MY GOD. MY COUNTRY. MY CORPS.

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SAT AND SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHTS CHILL
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD DARK NIGHT
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOUR SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE
WHISPERED 'CARRY ON SANTA IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY ALL IS SECURE'
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT'.

This poem was written by a peace keeping soldier stationed overseas, the following is his request I think its reasonable.

PLEASE WOULD YOU DO ME THE KIND FAVOUR OF SENDING THIS TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN.
CHRISTMAS IS COMING SOON AND SOME CREDIT IS DUE TO OUR BRITISH SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN FOR OUR BEING ABLE TO CELEBRATE THESE FESTIVITIES.

He is A. Angell son, living at 1 Kirkham Avenue, York. what I want to know is his first name and if there are any other people with him.
For this I will be very grateful.

England / Strange Name
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 14:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Every one,
Has anybody ever heard of the name Beilby. I have in my tree a Beilby Dale marrying Ellen Lawson, 1874 Lancashire. I have him on the 1881 with wife and daughter Rose Ann.
Beilby states he was born 1851 York, Yorkshire. I cannot find a birth or death for him, or any trace before 1881 or from then.
Any ideas on what to do next.

Regards
Anne.

Hi Everyone,
This has probably been asked before but here goes.
My Todd family all from York, where watermen. Is there anywhere I can find information on Watermen as when I google it just brings up Thames Watermen. Obviously I want to know about the Yorkshire ones, but not sure where to look.
Thanking every one in advance.
