Robert and Ann married June 9, 1831 in Winteringham, Yorkshire. I am trying to find proof of who the parents were of Ann and her actual birth date. I have found a number of subsequent records that all differ as to when Ann was probably born.
Census 1841, aged 35
Census 1851, aged 47 (born Birstall/Birdsall?)
Immigration 1855 aboard "Ocean Chief" Jan-Mar 1855, aged 48
Died 14 Jan 1878 in Richmond Tasmania age 74
A number of family trees show Ann as born Jan 28, 1803 in Birdsall to Christopher Harrison but I can't verify that.
Is it possible to apply for a copy of the marriage certificate and would that show her parents names

Dublin / William Oakes - Dublin Court Records 30/7/1851?
« on: Monday 26 August 19 11:55 BST (UK)  »
William Oakes (ex Cumberland Regiment) - convicted of striking his superior and of desertion 30/7/1851, transported on the ship "Lord Dalhousie", arriving Van Diemen's Land/Tasmania 14/8/1852 (Ref: Tasmania Archives Convict Con 33-1-109).
Are there any records of this case, that could be looked up, and do they provide any further information that might confirm exactly where he was from or any other family details?
It was shown on the ships conduct record that William was from Derby.  This document and his death certificate indicate he was born circa 1829.
I am also hoping to find any records available from when William went into the Cumberland Regiment as trying to confirm who his parents where (I expect I may have to request this on another board).
William married in Tasmania and had children.  His wife was murdered on 31/8/1886.  William was convicted of her murder and died in the Campbell Street Gaol in Hobart, Tasmania on 5/6/1887.
He is my great great great grandfather.

I am trying to ascertain who William married, if he had children and when/where he died.  It appears that there were two people by this name born in 1886, one of who married an Ann Smith.  Is there a marriage record available that would show parents names?  William is the brother of my great grandfather John Francis Giffard who immigrated to Tasmania, Australia and is the only sibling in this family who I have lost.  Any help appreciated.

Cork / Look up request for William Oakes Circa 1834
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 12:29 BST (UK)  »
I am wanting to confirm the birth-date and birthplace for William Oakes born circa 1834, supposedly in Cork City, Cork, Ireland and if possible his parents details.
William Oakes (ex Cumberland Regiment - convicted of striking his superior and of desertion), transported to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania) on Lord Dalhousie, arriving 14 August 1852.
William Oakes married Margaret McGregor (also a convict) in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 18 May 1857.
William and Margaret came to sad ends - he was convicted of her murder in 1886.
William then died in Hobart at the Campbell St Gaol in 1887 of pneumonia.
The son of Margaret (but possibly not William), George Henry Oakes joined the police force and was in charge of the water police in Hobart.  George had a son, Walter George Oakes who became Commissioner of Police in Tasmania.

Family History Beginners Board / Gregson family - Derbyshire 1700's - Lookup request
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 10:52 BST (UK)  »
Charles Gregson (born between 1729 and 1735?) married Mary Longdale on 25 Mar 1761 at Sutton on the Hill, Derby.
I would like to confirm the actual birth date or christening date for this Charles Gregson.
Previous family research indicates that the parents of this Charles Gregson were John Gregson (born circa 1700, died 19 Oct 1774) and "Anne".
I would like to confirm if there is a known marriage for this couple and what Anne's maiden name was.
From there I hope to ascertain her birth date and parents names.
Any help or guidance in researching this would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Australia / Finding Birth Records in Western Australia Mills and Smith
« on: Thursday 30 March 17 11:25 BST (UK)  »
How does one go about finding out all the children registered to a couple in Western Australia? I am looking for children of Oswald Thomas Preston Mills and Ada Annie Smith (from 1913-1932?).  Some may be registered in Swan and at least one in Perth.   The records I am seeing don't give parents names to be able to check. At the moment I think I can only guess the most likely and then apply for copies of birth certificates.

Nottinghamshire / Ada Annie Smith possibly born 1897
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 10:07 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to replies have now confirmed that Ada Annie (Anne) Mills died 16.Jun.1985 in Western Australia at age 92 so born circa 1893.
I have Ada Annie Smith, who emigrated to Australia where she married Oswald Thomas Preston Mills in Leederville, Western Australia in 1913. I have no details on her parents or siblings and would like to find them. I am wondering if she might be the Ada Annie Smith born in 1897 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and the same Ada Annie Smith who emigrated to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1909.  If this is the case what other family members would have made the journey with her. Would anyone be able to join the dots for me? Thanks in advance.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Birth record MILLS Oswald Thomas Preston
« on: Tuesday 28 February 17 07:57 GMT (UK)  »
Update to original message below.  Now have mother's name but still need to confirm his father's name. Seems Oswald lived with his mother and her parents. Have immigration and marriage details.  Am so pleased to have found this site.
Would like to confirm the birth details of Oswald Thomas Preston Mills and find out his parents names. From his enlistment record in the Australian Army on 21 June 1941 comes that he was born on 13 April 1893 in Ashbourne, England (I think it is possible he was actually born in 1891). He died on 3 March 1963 and is buried at Guildford Cemetery in Western Australia. He was married to Ada Annie Smith. At this stage I don't know where or when they married or when he came to Australia. I would really appreciate any help in finding a bit more information. In the meantime I will take a closer look at this site which I have only found today. It looks like it will be very helpful. Thanks so much. Judy
