The Common Room / photograph of boys of oundle school
« on: Friday 11 July 08 17:45 BST (UK)  »
I am not sure where to post this.

In clearing out my late father-in-law's belongings we have come across a photograph of Oundle School where he was a pupil. The photograph is dated 1937 - it is one of those very wide ones with everyone on it. If anyone is interested then please let me know.

World War One / 8th service Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment (pioneers)
« on: Saturday 08 March 08 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My great grandfather was in the Pioneer corps during the Great War. Living near Chichester, I assume he would have been in the above. He was definitely in France, and in the trenches (on burial duties I believe). He survived, but never ever spoke of his experiences (not surprisingly really).  How could i go about finding out more about his time in the army please?  I think he was called Albert Arthur White, (definitely Albert and White not sure about the Arthur!)
Sorry if this is a really "noddy" question....
Many thanks as ever for any help!

Durham / deaths during second world war II
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 23:48 GMT (UK)  »
Please forgive my ignorance. If someone died during the war (in active service or as a civilian) would the death be registered on the BMD?? I am trying to follow up my Whitesmith lead, Great Aunt May (nee smith) had nine children including three boys  None seems to have married, I have a possible death for one in 1984, but have tracked the others through from birth to 1966(so far) and have not turned up any possible death certificates, and I am just wondering if I should be looking elsewhere.

As ever your help greatly appreciated.

Durham / Help! Smiths have become Whitesmiths, but no nearer
« on: Monday 12 March 07 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone  out there have any connection to the Whitesmith family of Gateshead. It seems my May Smith married a Whitesmith 1919 ( marriage certificate to confirm currently awaited), to date I have identified the following possible children...Henrietta R M, oct quarter 1922, Robert H, Jan quarter 1925, Ronald J (Jan  quarter 1927)  If I am right May is my great aunt..... any takers?  it seems the name is fairly unusual ( well in comparison to the Robsons Smiths and Charltons I have been wading through lately)...

Any help very greatly appreciated - all lines of research leading to brick walls at the moment!!

Durham / smallholdings Winlaton
« on: Wednesday 06 September 06 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Have at last received evidence that as claimed by my late mother, Great Uncle Henry James Smith had a smallholding whilst living at Wylam View Winlaton. I see from current map that there is a cricket ground and playing field in the vicinity. Is there anyone local  out there who could tell me if these were previously given over to market gardens or somesuch, and  if there  is a register of smallholders for the area?   Also does anyone have a Thelma Johnson of Winlaton in their tree, who married my mother's cousin Mackenzie Smith (great uncle henry's son) in 1949 - if so I would love to hear from you, so far nothing has turned up for Mackenzie himself

Regards and thanks

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Look up 1881 census please
« on: Monday 04 September 06 18:18 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find missing family?I have them on the 1871 census:-John Smith (don't laugh!) born 1841 Snilesworth N Yorks, Farm Servant his wife Isabella b 1844 Great Smeaton N Yorks, Sarah A born 1866 Thornton-le-St, Jane E born 1868 Maunby, and Henry born 1870 Upsall, but I can't find any of them on the 1881 census. Henry turns up on the 1891 census in Gateshead( at least I think this is the same Henry) but I would love to know where they were in 1881. It has been suggested to me that they may have been gypsy/romanys but that doesn't seem to fit with what little I know about Henry.

Thanks as ever for your interest

Durham / New names in my tree Veitch and Scott
« on: Wednesday 16 August 06 23:36 BST (UK)  »
Still hot on the pursuit of my Smiths.  Is anyone looking for this lady born Gateshead approx 1899? She has come in to my tree as the wife of Henry J Smith (marriage 1920), and if she has cropped up in anyone else's tree either in Gateshead or Yorkshire I would be very grateful for any info, (for once the name is a bit more unusual!) .  Also still looking for anyone with Robert Stoves Scott, a Coal miner from Gateshead in their tree. Married my great aunt Ethel Jane Smith on 9th November 1916 at Gateshead Register Office. Thanks for reading this.
Regards Sadietoo.
