Yorkshire (West Riding) / Mystery Hannah - Rotherham area
« on: Saturday 02 May 20 14:39 BST (UK)  »
I am unable to find anything on my 4th great Grandmother. She is in the 1881 census living in Swinton under the name Hannah Hague aged 18 with her husband Matthew Hague aged 23. She soon died in 1889 living in a few houses down from her house in 1881. On the 1881 she is given a birthplace and year of 1863 in Swinton.

They had 4 children Sarah, Matthew, John and Rose with the youngest being born just a few months before Hannah's death. I am unable to find a maiden name for her and the only marriages I can find for a Matthew Hague at that time was to either an Annie, Ann or Matilda. Could she be either of of these women? And how could I prove which one she is?

Norfolk / Help with confirming a suspected ancestor
« on: Wednesday 20 November 19 00:30 GMT (UK)  »
I’m just wanting a second (probably more experienced) opinion on whether I’m going in the right direction with my family.

My 4th great-grandad, Horace Catchpole was born around 1835 to an unmarried woman called Mary Catchpole in Shimpling Norfolk. In 1841 I can see they are both seen living with a 75 year old John Catchpole. I have since concluded that this is most likely Mary’s Father.

No I can see a John Catchpole married Mary Coloman in 1797 (just a few years prior to Mary Catchpole’s birth). However I never got any hints of a baptism for Mary, I did some searching and found one in 1799 in Shimpling.

I’m just wanting to see if anyone may either know about this family or can see if any of these links seem credible (I’ve made too many mistakes to trust myself 100% with guesses ;D ). Any new information would also be appreciated too!

The Lighter Side / UK City and County Directories

This is just a quick question really but was there a certain age that someone would have to pass before being included on the UK City and County Directories or would young children also be put on?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Wadkins/ Watkins
« on: Friday 04 January 19 13:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having trouble with my Great-Grandmothers family that were in Rotherham. This is the information I currently have.

My great-grandmother is called Elizabeth Varley. Her maiden name is either Wadkin or Watkin and I have seen it as both along records. I have her birth certificate and it states her mothers name as Annie Wadkin. She was born on 21st January 1912. There was no name down for her father.

She was married twice. Her first marriage was to George Herbert, with whom she had 2 sons. On the record I found for their marriage her surname was down as Wadkin.

She was also married to Harry Harvey (My great-grandfather) which I bought the marriage certificate for. This states her fathers name as Joseph Watkin who was a Steel worker. She had 6 kids with Harry after their marriage sixteenth July 1945.

On all her children's birth indexes their mothers surname alternates between Wadkin and Watkin.

She died in March 1980 in Rotherham.

I am unable to find any marriage between a Annie and Joseph in the area and am a bit stuck. I have no close living relatives that would know anymore information than I have. Any help would be appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Harvey/ Watkin family

I am struggling to find any information on this side of my family.

So far I know of Harry Harvey who had 6 children with Elizabeth Watkin between the years 1946 and 1956. I know Elizabeth was married once before with 2 children but I don't know anything about her previous husband other than he died before she married Harry. They lived in Rotherham.

In her first marriage, she had 2 sons. While married to Harry they had 6 children between 1946 and 1956.

Harry died before or around 1975. Elizabeth was born 21 January 1912 and died March 1980.

Lincolnshire / Houldershaw Family
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 23:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am struggling to find some records for 2 members of the Houldershaw family from Grimsby. I currently have:
  • John Houldershaw- who married Lily Weeden in October 1912 and had 3 children (Lilian, Mabel and John)
  • Sally Houldershaw- who I don't have any information of other than that she is the sister of John.

I have got these two off a written family tree sketch my grandmother made when she was younger with the help of one of her Grandparents so the name Sally could be a nickname or short for her actual name. There was also no mention of any more siblings. My grandmother also said that John was gassed in the war and then went mad in an asylum.

Any information or help is greatly appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Unknown death of William Hague in Rotherham (about 1950)
« on: Saturday 04 March 17 20:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am struggling to find any information relating to his William Hague's death. All I know is that he was married to an Annie Nixon and they had 2 daughters (Patricia and Jean) and a son (Leonard).

All my grandmother (William's granddaughter) can tell me is that whenever she asked about his death she got told that she would be told at another time. This now makes her think that there was something strange about his death.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.
