Technical Help / Cookies on RootsChat - can 'Reject All' be added please
« on: Wednesday 29 March 23 09:43 BST (UK)  »
A few years ago, a cookie banner appeared on RootsChat and the number of vendors to turn off was so great I stayed off. Then it changed and it was simpler to turn off cookies. Now it's back to the panel of a few years ago with so many vendors it's taken me 5 mins to switch them all off.

Is it possible to have a 'Reject All' button like many sites do?

Thanks, Flemming.

Occupation Interests / Was an iron bundler the same as a stock taker?
« on: Monday 27 February 23 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
...or are they totally different occupations?

Both come up as groom/bride's father's occupation on the marriage records of alleged siblings, but I wonder if there are two different family groups involved here  ???

Many thanks, Flemming

Hereís a challenge for Chatters. Itís a clip from the Will of Ambrose Gibbons of Edenbridge in Kent, proved in January 1804. The clip mentions grandchildren Ephraim and Mary Alborough - at least it looks like Alborough, but I havenít been able to find baptisms or otherwise for them.

Any ideas for alternative interpretations?

Thanks, Flemming.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Witness signature on marriage entry
« on: Sunday 30 October 22 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Chatters, I'd appreciate your views on the attached witness signature to a marriage 1818 [edited from 1795] Stoke Damerel, Devon. It's the initial that's the query. At first sight, it might look like 'H', but the small 'w' above it means (I think) either 'A' for Andrew or 'M' for Matthew. There are reasons why it could be either of these two but I won't lead the witness(es) yet  ;)

Cornwall / Mystery of the missing bp for William Bowden 1770 Callington
« on: Saturday 29 October 22 12:45 BST (UK)  »
Just wonder if Chatters can help with the following conundrum. Attached is a clip of the Army discharge paper for William Bowden of Callington. It says he joined up on 6.10.1790 when he was 20 yrs old + 205 days and that this was taken from 'Bapt Certificate' - possible birth and/or bp March/April 1770.

I can't find a bp 1770 in Callington or neighbouring parishes, although it's possible he was born/bp elsewhere and moved to Callington afterwards. There's a bp 3.8.1772 Landrake to Richard and Susanna, and it's possible William was born two years before his baptism, although his parents' likely marriage was in June 1772.

Maybe this was a non-conformist baptism and records lost or unavailable.

Any other ideas much appreciated.

The Common Room / Images not showing on FS
« on: Wednesday 27 July 22 09:18 BST (UK)  »
Just wonder if anyone else if having issues viewing images on FS. Attached is a screenshot of images from burials for Stoke Damerel in Devon where you can see some pages are images, others are blank and just say 'photo' across it. Any ideas? Thanks, Flemming.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Father's occupation looks like scavenger
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 19:24 GMT (UK)  »
The attached clips are from the London St Pancras parish register in 1829 and 1836. Father's occupation looks like 'scavenger' but not sure about this. Any other ideas? Thanks, Flemming.

The Common Room / Issues with access to FamilySearch
« on: Monday 17 January 22 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any issues accessing Family Search (new format) at present? The format has changed again for me and I've been unable to see various parts of it. For example, when you get the list of results, you usually have a panel on the right-hand side but, for me, this is now blank - see attached image. I've tried clicking on 'Preferences' at the top but it doesn't even recognise the click. I used to be able to alter criteria in the panel on the right, but now I have to click 'Records' in the top bar and start all over again.

Also, from the main page, when I click on the map to access records by region, it doesn't recognise a click on any of the countries. It does pick up the mouse hovering over a region and says its name, but I can't get it to open.

Any ideas anyone?

Technical Help / Windows Vista upgrade
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 10:23 GMT (UK)  »
Just wonder if anyone has advice on using Windows Vista these days - are there still security updates for it or should the OS be upgraded to something more current? Many thanks, Flemming.
