Family History Beginners Board / Information after 1905
« on: Tuesday 07 February 06 15:29 GMT (UK)  »
My gr-granny was born in 1906, do you know how I could find her birth certificate online?  Or would I have to go to the Scottish archives?

Family History Beginners Board / Another translation needed...
« on: Monday 06 February 06 18:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again,
I'm now finding it difficult to read my gggrandfather's birth certificate.  It says he's illegitimate, which is fair enough... but there's a note next to his name which is this... Can anyone read it... I can make out 'Paternity of child' then maybe 'found by' something... 'see [something] of [something], [something] Vol 1, pg 1'

Also, she's listed on page 5 of the 1861 census for Dunbar, East Lothian, but the rest of the household are on page 4... How can I find out what's on page 4?  She's a domestic servant, so won't necessarily have the same name as the others in the household.   ???

What would a drainer do?  Has anyone heard of this occupation before?   ???

Family History Beginners Board / Can anyone read this surname?

I hope I can attach this correctly... It's the death certificate of my g.grandfather... I can get a hold of the original when I'm up at my granny's in a few months time, but I decided to get the Scotland's people one anyway so I can do more research myself.  (Granny tends to get me confused by telling lots of stories and family-lore rather than facts)
Can anyone read his mother's name?  It's Sarah and I thought 'Calton' but I can't find anyone in Scotland with Calton as a surname... never mind a 'Sarah'.
Sorry if it's really big, I don't know how to resize it!   ???

Scotland / Taylor and White (Borders)
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,
I'm looking for any information on my Dad's side of the family.
My Grandfather's name was John Mulvie White and he was born in Clovenfords in the Scottish Borders in 1933.  His parents, Annie (nee Mulvie, I believe) and James, as far as I know were born there too.  They lived on a farm on Meigle Hill, which is where my granddad's ashes are scattered.  I think some family were in Ayton as there are 17 White's buried according to records and I remember my granddad saying he went to school there.  He also went to school in Peebles.
My Grandmother's name is Isabella Willis (born 1937), daughter of James Taylor and Isabella Taylor of Galashiels.
I'm ideally looking for what happened before that (pre 1900-ish).  She also has an aunt (Agnes Taylor who is still alive at 99 years old - wee soul!) and some family were supposedly in Eyemouth.
My gran has some information but she's 400 miles away up in Scotland, so I'm going to find out more... but it would be great if anyone had any information on any connections in these areas.
Thanks,
Ang xx
