Somerset / CHAPMAN or STOKES or CHAPMAN STOKES - Family Mystery
« on: Monday 06 April 09 21:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I need your help - I have a mystery to solve.

My G GF Albert Chapman was born on 30th March 1891 (surname on birth and marriage certificates is CHAPMAN). (parents listed as Mary (Harper) and Albert Chapman).

My GG GF Albert Chapman was born in c1863 – unable to find a birth certificate.
I have found him and his family in the 1891 and 1901 census' with the surname CHAPMAN.
I have purchased his marriage certificate which gives his name as Albert Chapman Stokes (wife Mary Harper)(SEP 1882 AXBRIDGE 5c 8050. His father is listed as William Chapman Stokes (my GGG GF) (occupation Cutler).

My GGG GF William George Stokes / William Chapman Stokes was born c1837 – unable to find a birth certificate.

My GGGGF Richard Chapman Stokes was born on the 14th January 1801 (igi P006281/1800-1822/0254603-0254607/FILM 0821156)

It is my GGG GF William who has caused all the problems -
In 1857 he married using the name William George Stokes
In 1871 census he used the name William George Stokes
In 1881 census he used the name William Chapman
In 1882 used the name William Chapman Stokes (on son's marriage certificate)
In 1886 he married using the name William Chapman Stokes
In 1896 he died using the name William Chapman Stokes

In the 1851census William is married to Anabella – although they didn’t marry until 1857 !
In the 1881 census William is married to Mary  A – although they didn’t marry until 1886 !

Now I don't know if the family were
Stokes or Chapman or Chapman-Stokes or sometimes Chapman is a middle name and Stokes the surname

I have trawled the census' and have found the following entries for my GGG GF William
C1851 – H107/1936/320/33   - William Stokes (age 23, occupation tinman) wife Arabella
C1861 – RG9/1603/55/17   - Wm Stokes (age 36, occupation labourer) married to Arabele.
C1871 – RG10/2355/45/12   - William G Stokes (age 43, occupation cutler/grinder) wife Arabella
C1881 – RG11/2410/34/19   - William Chapman (age 42, occupation grinder) wife Mary A
C1891 – RG12/1920/141/38   - William Chapman (age 52, occupation surgical cutler) no wife

I have found the following :

Marriage references :
28th June 1857 – William George Stokes, a chimney sweep married Arabella Bruford, at the Church of St Decumans, Somerset.  William and Arabella were living in Watchett (JUN 1857 Williton 5c 543)

1886 - William Chapman Stokes married Mary Ann Winter. (JUN 1886 Bedminster 5c 1149)

Death references :
Mary Chapman Stokes       age 42    JUN 1895 Axbridge 5c 371
William Chapman Stokes    age 59   MAR 1896 Axbridge 5c 362

I cannot find a death reference for Arabella Stokes

I have found the following children :
William George Stokes   MAR 1851 Bridgwater 10 368
John Stokes      JUN 1851 Bridgwater 10 373
Mary Stokes      SEP 1855 Bridgwater 5c 410
William Bruford Stokes   SEP 1858 Williton 5c 362

Hannah Selina Chapman   SEP1874 Axbridge 5c 595
Charles Chapman   SEP 1882 Wells 5c 518
Walter Chapman      DEC 1886 Wells 5c 49 [35]

I would like find the following :

The birth certificate for my GG GF Albert Chapman born in c1863 ?

Why did my GG GF Albert drop the Stokes from his name ?

Why did my GGG GF William continuously changed his name (bigamy perhaps?)

Sorry to be so long winded, but I am unsure of what to say.

Thank you for staying with me til the end, any help or advice anyone can give will be gratefully received

Hi everyone

My GG Grandfather, George Marlow, was born in 1836, in Bishops Tawton, Devon.

I cannot find him in the 1861 Census.

I have found him in
1841 : HO107/234/6/4/9/12/19 (age 7) - in Horestone, Bishops Tawton
1851 : H107/1893/689/4 (age 17) spelt MARLO - in Cuckles Lane, Bishops Tawton
1871 : RG10/2193/6/3 (age 35) - Dariton Cottage, Bishops Tawton
1881 : RG11/2251/69/7 (age 45) - Horestone Cottage, Bishops Tawton

1901 : RG13/2152/38/9 (age 66) - Horestone Cottage, Bishops Tawton

I have found the rest of his family in the 1861 census with his wife Jane listed as the head of the house. RG9/1496/5/4 - in Woodland, Bishops Tawton

I have tried various spellings of Marlow but am still unable to find him - any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Australia / Eva Mary CREEK - NSW look up please
« on: Monday 06 April 09 18:25 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

I have spent many many months searching for a trace of my Grandmother, Eva Mary Creek.  (and  have previously posted on here).

All evidence led to Victoria, and with lots of help from Jenn and Cando we still could not find her!

I have very recently made contact with a "lost cousin".  He has been able to tell me that Eva was living at the Albury Nursing Home under the care of Dr. Peter Francis and passed away one week before her 100th birthday. Her funeral was held at North Albury Cemetary where she remains.

I have googled "Albury" and its in New South Wales.  It looks like the family did move out state!!

I think she must have died between 1984 and 1986.

Here's her story -

My Grandmother was born, Eva Mary Edwards, on the 24th September 1885, in Budleigh Salterton, St Thomas, Devon, England. Her parents were William Henry and Mary Elizabeth(formerly Bastow) Edwards.  She married William Henry Creek on the 12th April 1909 in Torrington, Deven, England.  After their marriage they moved the Cardiff, South Glamorgan, Wales.  My Grandad died in January 1960, and is buried in Cardiff.

Eva emigrated to Australia in the 1960's (I have a copy of her passport photograph with the date 1965 stamped on), because of her age she travelled by aeroplane.

She lived with her foster daughter and her family, Audrey (formerly Lailey) and Charlie Stokes, who had already emigrated on 11th May 1962 on board the Strathmore under the Assisted Passage Migration Scheme.  I have copies of old letters which indicate that the family lived in Victoria, but moved house frequently.

We were told she died in 1984, just before her 99th birthday, but the family would not send a copy of the death certificate, and both families lost touch.

I have had a lot of sleepless nights trying to find her, any help or suggestions would be very welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to read Eva's story.

Europe / GERMANY - Hoffellt/Hoffelt/Hoffield/Hoffeld ?????
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find information about my Great Great Grand Mother - Anne Maria Hoffield / Hoffeld.

The only information I have been able to find so is :

She married Philip Young (Jung) on the 10th May 1865, in Grahams Town, South Africa.  (He was in the 96th Regiment of the British Army, and was stationed in South Africa between 1863 and 1865).

He landed in India on 01/01/1866, and transferred to 40th of Foot Regiment on 01/09/1873, where he was stationed until 1883.  When he then returned to England and was discharged on 13/02/1883.

In the 1891 census (RG12/4401/48C/71), the family was living in Cardiff, Wales and Mary was listed as being born in 1846 in Vulernaison, Germany.

BUT

Vulernaison does not exist, I have been advised that this could be Vulcmarsen (VOLKMARSEN).

-      So was she actually German and living in South Africa or was she South African?

-      I would also like to know how I would go about getting a marriage certificate.

Any information would be gratefully received.
