Cheshire / Ellen of Carden -- Challinor Family
« on: Wednesday 25 March 20 03:40 GMT (UK)  »
Seeking information on Ellen of Carden, who married my ancestor Thomas Challinor (b.1804). They lived near Chester in Cheshire. They had one child, Mary, born in 1828. I don't have a surname for Ellen (unless it's Carden, but straightforward searches don't reveal anything). There's one possibility, Ellen Carden, in a Greenwood family tree, but she married someone else. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheshire / Chester Trade directories
« on: Saturday 26 August 17 02:03 BST (UK)  »
In 1901, my GF, Thomas Challlinor, was a coffee house keeper near the Chester Railway Station. The 1901 Census shows him as a self-employed coffee house keeper. His wife, Sarah, later became a confectioner in the Chester region, probably in Griffiths Street, Hoole. Are there trade directories that are likely to show them, and if so, under which categories? I've looked in a couple under coffee house keepers and confectioners, but these categories don't exist. So two questions:
1. Directories
2. Categories
Thank you.

Cheshire / Cheshire Workhouses
« on: Saturday 12 August 17 00:38 BST (UK)  »
According to Cheshire Workhouse Records (Birth), my aunt was born in 1895 in a workhouse located in Church Street. Other names on the same record also show Church St, Frodsham as the birthplace.
However, it is my understanding that the workhouse in Church St was closed by that date. The Tarvin and Runcorn Workhouses were on Heath Lane and Northwich Rd respectively. Was there in fact a workhouse in Church Road, Chester, in 1895? If so, I would like to have its name. Thanks.

I found Thomas Chalenor, born Bunbury, Cheshire, in 1608 with father John.
I have also found Thomas Chalenor, born Bunbury, Cheshire in 1610 with father William.
I cannot tell from the Cheshire Parish Records or the Bishop's Transcripts which of them is the father of my ancestor Thomas Challinor (Chalenor) born 1640 (also Bunbury). No mothers or marriages are shown, and no grave listing. Can anyone suggest a next step? Thank you.

World War One / NZ soldiers at Sling Camp, Salisbury Plains
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 04:25 BST (UK)  »
My father, Arthur Challinor,  travelled by troop ship from NZ to Torquay around April 1917 and then spent some 180 or so days in Sling Camp before shipping home. One of these trips was on the troop ship Remuera, but I don't know which, and I also would like to know the name of the other troop ship. Archives NZ contains an incomplete and often illegible service record for my father. Any suggestions welcome.

Family History Beginners Board / Challinors of Cheshire and East Wales

My ancestors include:
Josh/Joseph Challinor chr. 1730 and his father Joseph Challinor chr. 1688.
I cannot find Joseph 1688's parents, or siblings for either of them. I have tried BMD and Bishop's Transcripts online, without success. Can anyone advise me where to go with this? I have a subscription to Ancestry.com. Thanks.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Trips to UK from NZ, Challinor, 1909 and 1937
« on: Tuesday 11 July 17 04:06 BST (UK)  »
In 1908 Thomas Challinor emigrated to New Zealand on the Surrey (I have this info.) with his two oldest sons Tom and Arthur. Tom returned to the UK within a few months. I cannot find him in passenger list searches. Are there crew lists anywhere for this period?

In 1937 Thomas left New Zealand and went to Cheshire, England. He returned within a few months to New Zealand. I cannot seem to find him on any passenger lists going either way. Are there crew lists anywhere for this period?

All suggestions most welcome!

Thomas Challinor, b circa 1891, left New Zealand to return to Llangollen, Wales in 1909-11.

He had emigrated to New Zealand in 1908 with his father, also Thomas, and his younger brother Arthur. I cannot seem to find him in ship passenger lists. Any suggestions? I have an Ancestry membership.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Joseph Challinor circa 1734, Bunbury, Cheshire
« on: Tuesday 27 June 17 00:44 BST (UK)  »
I need to identify the parents of this person, but cannot locate them in any of the BMD databases. I know several of his children, plus his wife and her parents, but cannot find a birth record for him. Can anyone suggest where else to search? I have an Ancestry membership.
