The Common Room / Wrench/Kerrison marriage
« on: Sunday 13 March 22 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
Harry Wrench and Florence Edith Kerrison were married in Southwark, 1939/MAR.  Please can anyone tell me where they were living at that time, and who their fathers were.   Thank you

The Common Room / Where was 5 year old Eva buried?
« on: Wednesday 19 January 22 19:58 GMT (UK)  »
Eva Okill was born 1904/JUN, her parents were George Okill and Emma nee Downes and Eva was the last of their ten children.  Sadly Eva died on 24th November 1909 when the family were living at 128 Blackhorse Lane, Walthamstow.  We think it likely that Eva, whose family were Methodists, was buried in Queen's Road Cemetery, probably in the area designated for non-conformist use.  Can anyone confirm this, please.

The Common Room / Where was G Okill's shop?
« on: Saturday 27 November 21 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone tell me the location of G Okill's butcher's shop.  We believe that G Okill was George born 1889, the son of George b 1855 and Emma nee Downes.  Possibly the business was owned by the older George, censuses show him as having various occupations but none of them was butcher!

At the 1901 census the family were living in Camberwell and in 1911 they were in Walthamstow.

George junior is believed to have served in WW1 and, after his discharge, it is thought he went to America but no more was ever heard of him!

The Common Room / Can anyone suggest which John Jones this might be?
« on: Friday 30 October 20 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
John Jones was born 30/8/1891, place unknown; died Rochford, Essex 1967.  He was a civil servant and during the 1939/45 war he was posted to the Birmingham area where he worked in a secret unit responsible for the supply and distribution of armaments

That is all the information we have about him so I realise that this post is a very long shot, but hope that someone might recognise either him or the building which housed his office, where the photograph was taken.

The Common Room / Which Sarah Elsom was she?
« on: Sunday 02 August 20 16:49 BST (UK)  »
My son-in-law has a Bible which has been passed down through his late mother's family. On the flyleaf two names are written in an elaborate script:  John Rose 1798 and Sarah Elsom 1767.  John was my son-in-law's direct ancestor and was easily traced but I can find no reason for Sarah's name being in the Rose family Bible or any explanation of the date 1767.

The Rose family lived in Sutterton, Lincolnshire (registration district Boston) until comparatively recently and I did find some Elsoms living there as well but couldn't find any connection to the Rose family, so here is another challenge for clever Rootschatters.

Thank you for your interest and, hopefully, help!

The Common Room / Look-up for John Jones
« on: Saturday 25 July 20 10:40 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone look up John E Jones, born 1891 and living in Birmingham, on the 1939 register.  His address was either 31 Whitmore Road or 42 Hazelmere Road.  I'm seeking details of his family.

Thanks for any help

The Common Room / Possible nursery school in Upper Tooting?
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone tell me if the house at 24 Bushnell Road, Upper Tooting, S.W.17 was being used as some sort of nursery/pre-school in 1942.  If it was it may have been run by a lady named  Dorothy Hunt.

Technical Help / Log-in to Rootschat
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 19:44 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if this is the best forum for my query but it seemed the most appropriate

For the last couple of days when I've accessed Rootschat (via Bing) I've not been asked to log in but have been recognised straight away, previously I've always been required to enter my user name and password.  Has the site changed or am I doing something wrong?
